Chapter 3

I chose a Tuesday.

Not because Tuesdays held any special meaning, but because that was when Jace held his formal leadership meetings. Every ranked wolf in the pack would be there—Beta, Gamma, every Delta warrior who mattered. The entire architecture of Ironveil's power structure, assembled in one room.

I wanted witnesses.

I dressed carefully that morning. The last clean dress I owned—a simple gray cotton thing that had seen better days. My mother's silver pendant around my neck, resting just above my heart. I brushed my hair until it fell smooth down my back. My hands didn't shake.

Barnaby watched me from his spot by the door, his head tilted in that worried way he had. I knelt and scratched behind his ears.

"Stay here," I told him softly. "I'll be back soon."

He whined, but he stayed.

I walked through the pack house corridors with my head up. A few wolves glanced my way—brief, dismissive looks—then went back to their business. I was Omega here. Invisible unless someone needed floors scrubbed or dishes washed.

Let them look away. They'd remember this day.

The meeting room doors were closed. I could hear voices inside—Jace's deep, authoritative tone giving orders, someone else responding. The familiar rhythm of pack business.

I didn't knock.

I pushed both doors open and walked in.

The room fell silent instantly. Twenty wolves turned to stare. Jace sat at the head of the long table, Sierra to his right in the seat that should have been mine. His expression shifted from surprise to irritation in the space of a heartbeat.

"Vivienne," he said, his voice carrying that edge of Alpha command. "This is a closed meeting. You need to—"

I walked straight toward him. My footsteps echoed on the hardwood floor. Every eye in the room tracked my movement.

Jace stood, his posture shifting into something more aggressive. "I said—"

I slapped him.

The sound cracked through the room like a gunshot. His head snapped to the side. Silence. Complete, absolute silence. No one moved. No one breathed.

I turned to Sierra. Her face had gone pale, her eyes wide. For once, that smooth composure cracked.

I slapped her too.

She stumbled back against her chair, one hand flying to her cheek. A warrior behind her half-rose, then froze when I looked at him.

"Sit down," I said quietly.

He sat.

I turned back to Jace. He was staring at me, his jaw tight, one hand pressed to his reddening cheek. Rage flickered in his eyes—the kind that usually made wolves submit immediately.

I felt nothing.

"I, Vivienne Morgan," I said, my voice clear and steady, "daughter of Alpha Morgan of Silvercrest, reject you, Jace, Alpha of Ironveil, as my mate."

The bond snapped.

Pain exploded through my chest—white-hot, searing, like someone had reached inside and torn something vital loose. My wolf howled in agony. My knees buckled. I caught myself on the edge of the table, my fingers digging into the wood.

But I didn't fall.

Jace did.

He crashed from his chair to his knees, both hands clutching his chest. His face went gray. His aura—that dominant, commanding presence that usually filled every room he entered—flickered like a candle in wind.

And then Fenris howled.

It came from deep inside Jace, a sound of pure, devastating grief that made every wolf in the room flinch. It rose and rose, filling the space, echoing off the walls.

Then it cut off.

Silence.

Complete. Absolute. Final.

Fenris was gone.

I straightened slowly, forcing my body to obey despite the pain still radiating through every nerve. Jace was on his hands and knees now, gasping, his eyes wide with something that looked like shock. Or maybe horror.

Sierra had backed against the wall, her hand still on her cheek, staring at me like I'd grown fangs.

I looked around the room. Twenty wolves. Every single one of them watching. Witnessing.

"Remember this," I said quietly.

Then I turned and walked out.

My legs carried me through the corridor, down the stairs, out the side entrance. The cold air hit my face. I kept walking. One foot in front of the other. My chest felt hollow, like something essential had been carved out and the space left empty.

But I was still standing.

I made it to the tree line before my knees finally gave out. I sank down into the fallen leaves, my back against a trunk, and pressed both hands to my chest. The pain was still there—duller now, but persistent. A phantom ache where the bond used to be.

My wolf was silent. Not gone, like Fenris. Just... quiet. Resting.

I don't know how long I sat there. The sun moved across the sky. Shadows shifted. Eventually, I heard footsteps.

I looked up.

Allan Daniels stood a few feet away, his weathered face calm. He didn't ask if I was all right. He didn't offer platitudes. He just held out one hand.

"Come on," he said. "Let's get you somewhere safe."

I took his hand and let him pull me to my feet.

Behind us, in the pack house, I knew chaos was unfolding. Jace would be recovering. Sierra would be scrambling. The pack would be talking.

I didn't look back.

I was done looking back.
