Chapter 1

Before the wedding, Olive Kelley knew all too well that Garrett Armstrong's blindness was a sham. But she figured he had his reasons, so for five years she devoted herself to caring for him. Not until a disastrous live stream went viral did the brutal truth come crashing down.

That day, Garrett was unusually erratic, refusing to let her slip away. His actions were harsh—control and punishment. The pain was so intense Olive blacked out. When she came to, Garrett was gone.

Her phone rang. It was her best friend, Estella Harvey: "Olive, what the hell has gotten into Garrett? He actually live-streamed what happened last night! It's everywhere—millions of views already!"

Olive grabbed her phone. The footage was painfully clear. It hit her like a bolt of lightning. She threw on her clothes and rushed to Garrett's office to confront him. As she neared the door, she overheard a heated argument inside.

Vivienne Gutierrez's voice trembled: "Garrett, what was last night all about?"

Garrett's tone was ice-cold: "Whatever I do is none of your business, Vivienne. You're the one who walked away for some so-called tennis career."

Vivienne's voice cracked with tears: "My parents said they'd only approve of us if I won a Grand Slam. For you, I trained until I got sick and wrecked my knees... Now my career's over, and you're getting married."

"In the end, I only have myself to blame. Garrett, congrats on finding your true love. I won't intrude on your life anymore. Goodbye."

As she turned to leave, Garrett abruptly stood, grabbed her wrist, and pulled her into a kiss. His emotions were raw, a stark contrast to his usual controlled demeanor: "Last night was meant to get a rise out of you."

"Back then, I pretended to be blind to push Olive away. But instead of leaving, she honored our marriage agreement and took care of this 'blind man' with real devotion."

"But the one I love is you. I just needed to know if you still cared."

Vivienne kissed him back with equal hunger: "I care, Garrett. The regret is eating me alive. So tell me—do you still want me?"

He held her tighter. "Yes, I only want you!"

Outside the door, Olive stood frozen. Her entire body went numb, the pain sinking into her very bones. The love he had never once shown her was now poured out openly on Vivienne. She'd believed that if she stayed by his side long enough, his love would eventually be hers. In that moment, she realized she'd been a complete fool.

Swallowing the dull ache in her chest, she turned and slipped away without a sound.

At four p.m., Olive got a call from Brantley Snyder, Garrett's childhood friend, inviting her to a dinner party. Their college sweetheart was back from abroad, and everyone was gathering. After some thought, Olive agreed. There was no point in ending things on bad terms.

When Olive opened the door to the private dining room, she immediately spotted Garrett and Vivienne tucked close together, their intimacy impossible to miss. The room went quiet.

Brantley was the first to recover, introducing her with a smile: "This is Garrett's wife, Olive Kelley."

Vivienne greeted her politely: "Hi, I'm Vivienne Gutierrez, a close friend of Garrett's."

Garrett sipped his coffee in silence. Olive quietly took a seat in the corner.

Sensing the awkward tension, Brantley quickly suggested, "Now that everyone's here, how about a round of rock-paper-scissors to break the ice?"

Vivienne lost the first round. Someone laughed and handed her a drink. Garrett intercepted it without a word and downed it in one go. Someone teased, "With Garrett around, Vivienne never has to touch a drink!"

Catching sight of Olive, the guy stuttered, "Olive, don't get the wrong idea—we're just old friends, really."

Olive's gaze locked on Garrett, waiting for him to say something, anything, to ease the situation. But Garrett simply lowered his head and offered no explanation.

All at once, Olive felt like a complete outsider in this group.

Garrett lost the second round. Someone jokingly dared Garrett—the 'blind man'—to kiss someone on the spot. Without a second's hesitation, he kissed Vivienne hard and deep. The room erupted in cheers.

Only Brantley leaned toward Olive and whispered, "Olive, he's wasted. He probably mistook Vivienne for you. Don't take it to heart—we've all known each other forever."

Garrett stayed silent. Olive fought back the waves of sadness, raised her glass, and threw it back in one gulp.

Garrett's friends immediately noticed: "Olive can barely handle alcohol, and she just downed a huge glass of whiskey. Is she going to be okay?"

Garrett frowned, about to speak, but Vivienne tugged at his sleeve.

Olive replied calmly, "I'm fine. You all enjoy. I'm heading out."

Garrett made no move to follow. Olive lingered for a long while as rain began to pour. She watched Garrett and Vivienne hold each other tenderly in the rain. Soaked to the bone, the chill seeped through her, but it was nothing compared to the coldness spreading through her heart.

Finally, she made the call. "Dad, I was wrong. I'm ready to marry that comatose man from the Collins family in Westport."

Aunt Lydia told me that if I didn't secure the loan shark Mr. Jareth tonight, I’d be sleeping on the street. I stood outside the brass doors of the restaurant, my lungs refusing to expand, my hands shaking so violently that my gray wool skirt blurred in my vision. I was supposed to sell my soul to a monster to pay off my family’s debts. But when I sat down at Table 12, I didn't find a man in a leather jacket smelling of stale beer. Instead, I found a man in a bespoke suit who smelled of cedarwood and cold winter air, a man who looked at me like a specimen under a microscope. "Sit down," he commanded, his voice a deep rumble that vibrated in my chest. Before I could realize I was at the wrong table, he had already signaled the staff to throw the real loan shark out into the street. Then, he slid a blank black card across the table and offered me a deal: a marriage of convenience to satisfy his board of directors in exchange for my total protection. I signed the contract and moved into a penthouse he claimed belonged to his "boss," trying to play the part of the quiet, broken wife. But the lies were too loud to ignore. He called a half-million-dollar bottle of wine a "Costco blend" and claimed his $4 million Patek Philippe watch was a cheap replica. He thought he was protecting a helpless, mute girl, but he had no idea who I really was. I didn't understand why this "manager" had the police commissioner on speed dial or why he was tracking my every move with hidden cameras. While he was busy playing the savior, I was secretly logging onto the dark web as "The Surgeon," the only medical genius capable of treating the chronic, agonizing migraines he kept hidden from the world. The truth finally exploded when the loan shark cornered us at my aunt’s estate. As I held a corkscrew to a killer’s throat with surgical precision, I saw the mask slip from my husband’s face. I realized then that I hadn't just married a businessman—I had married the most dangerous man in New York, and he was currently wiring thousands of dollars to me to save his life.
