Chapter 2

Relief washed over Julio Kelley. "Before you and Garrett got married, I had him sign a prenuptial agreement. Garrett's temper is unpredictable. Just hang on for one more month. Once the divorce papers are finalized, the Kelley family from Westport will come take care of you."

"I understand, Dad," Olive replied.

Drenched from the rain, Olive made her way back to the villa. She gathered her personal belongings, coldly tossing aside wedding photos, albums, and anything tied to Garrett.

The next morning, Olive woke to her phone buzzing nonstop. It was flooded with finance updates and celebrity gossip.

"Garrett Armstrong has reportedly regained his eyesight. He was spotted walking more than three miles with tennis player Vivienne Gutierrez. The two looked inseparable and spent the night together at a luxury apartment downtown."

A bittersweet smile tugged at Olive's lips, but her eyes held a hollow emptiness. She'd once thought Garrett kept his distance in public because he was insecure. Now she knew the truth—he simply didn't love her.

As soon as she stepped outside her neighborhood, a swarm of reporters closed in on her.

"Ms. Kelley, did you come between Garrett Armstrong and Vivienne Gutierrez back when they were together?"

"Now that they're rumored to be back together, are you going to step aside gracefully?"

"Was that livestream just a stunt to keep Garrett with you?"

Camera flashes stung Olive's eyes.

Before she could answer, Garrett's voice rose above the crowd, sharp with authority. "Everyone, back up."

He shouldered his way through the reporters, planting himself protectively in front of Olive. "My personal life is none of your business. Leave my wife alone."

"Olive Kelley is my legal wife. Any claim that she interfered is baseless! If anyone keeps spreading lies about her, expect legal action."

When he finished, Garrett reached for Olive's hand. She yanked hers back before he could touch her and headed back to the villa alone.

Garrett followed, his voice thick with pleading. "Olive, please, just let me explain."

"Alright," Olive replied, her gaze steady.

"My sight came back about a month ago," Garrett admitted, visibly tense. "I wanted to surprise you when the time was right. That's why I kept it from you."

"Is that so? Well, congratulations on getting your sight back," Olive replied coolly.

Garrett hesitated, pressing his lips together. "Vivienne... We do have history. She gave up her career for me, and now she's hurt. I can't just abandon her."

"Please, just wait a little longer. Once she's recovered, I'll distance myself from her. Remember how you always wanted to see the Northern Lights? I'll take you once all this blows over."

So he did remember what she wanted—he'd just never made it a priority.

The irony cut deep. "Garrett, I'm tired. Let's proceed with the divorce."

Aunt Lydia told me that if I didn't secure the loan shark Mr. Jareth tonight, I’d be sleeping on the street. I stood outside the brass doors of the restaurant, my lungs refusing to expand, my hands shaking so violently that my gray wool skirt blurred in my vision. I was supposed to sell my soul to a monster to pay off my family’s debts. But when I sat down at Table 12, I didn't find a man in a leather jacket smelling of stale beer. Instead, I found a man in a bespoke suit who smelled of cedarwood and cold winter air, a man who looked at me like a specimen under a microscope. "Sit down," he commanded, his voice a deep rumble that vibrated in my chest. Before I could realize I was at the wrong table, he had already signaled the staff to throw the real loan shark out into the street. Then, he slid a blank black card across the table and offered me a deal: a marriage of convenience to satisfy his board of directors in exchange for my total protection. I signed the contract and moved into a penthouse he claimed belonged to his "boss," trying to play the part of the quiet, broken wife. But the lies were too loud to ignore. He called a half-million-dollar bottle of wine a "Costco blend" and claimed his $4 million Patek Philippe watch was a cheap replica. He thought he was protecting a helpless, mute girl, but he had no idea who I really was. I didn't understand why this "manager" had the police commissioner on speed dial or why he was tracking my every move with hidden cameras. While he was busy playing the savior, I was secretly logging onto the dark web as "The Surgeon," the only medical genius capable of treating the chronic, agonizing migraines he kept hidden from the world. The truth finally exploded when the loan shark cornered us at my aunt’s estate. As I held a corkscrew to a killer’s throat with surgical precision, I saw the mask slip from my husband’s face. I realized then that I hadn't just married a businessman—I had married the most dangerous man in New York, and he was currently wiring thousands of dollars to me to save his life.
