Chapter 2

Two days after I buried the last anchor, I walked into the main hall and heard Colton's voice before I saw him.

Not his regular voice. His Alpha tone.

It filled the room like warm water rising, pressed against every wolf standing there, made them still without making them afraid. I had heard it a thousand times. I had felt it press against my own chest a thousand times, that soft insistent weight that said *listen, obey, belong.*

Today it said something else.

"Thanksgiving," Colton was saying. He stood at the front of the hall with his shoulders square and his hands loose at his sides, easy and certain. "A formal feast. We'll host three neighboring packs. It's time Ironveil showed the region what we are."

I stopped just inside the doorway. Barnaby sat at my heel.

"And," Colton continued, his voice dropping into something warmer, something almost tender, "it's time I introduced the woman who will stand beside me as Luna."

The room held its breath.

"Alianna Shaw," he said. "Of the Shadowmere Pack. Guest of honor. Future Luna of Ironveil."

I watched his mouth shape her name. I watched the wolves in the room glance at each other, then at me, then down at the floor. No one said a word. The Alpha tone was still humming in the air, and under it, no one was allowed to object.

Colton's eyes found me across the room.

He did not flinch. He did not look away. He held my gaze for three long seconds, and then he said, still in that warm commanding voice, "Lottie, you'll prepare the formal welcome table. Make it something she'll remember."

My wolf surged.

Not like before, not like the night in the clearing when she had pressed silent and hot against my ribs. This time she moved like a living furnace, all heat and pressure, pushing up into my throat. I tasted smoke. My hands went tight at my sides.

I held it. I held all of it.

I nodded once.

"Of course," I said.

I turned and walked to the kitchen. Behind me, Colton resumed speaking, his voice easy again, laying out logistics, assigning tasks. No one followed me. No one ever did.

In the kitchen I stood at the counter with my palms flat on the wood and counted.

Nine more days. Four more anchors. Then the border, then the north, then gone.

I started planning the menu.

---

Thanksgiving came in cold and clear.

The hall filled early. Wolves from three packs, all of them dressed well, all of them loud with the particular brightness of people performing friendship. I moved through the kitchen in silence, plating, arranging, checking temperatures. Barnaby stayed under the prep table and watched me with his ears half-back.

"It's fine," I told him quietly. "We're fine."

At six-thirty, Colton appeared in the kitchen doorway. He was wearing the formal jacket, dark wool with silver buttons, the one that made his shoulders look even broader than they were. He smiled at me.

"Ready?" he asked.

I nodded. I picked up the first tray.

He reached out and touched my wrist, just briefly, just enough to stop me. "Thank you," he said. "For doing this right."

I looked at his hand on my wrist. I looked at his face. I said nothing.

He let go. He walked back into the hall.

I followed with the tray.

---

Alianna sat at the head table beside Colton, wearing a dress the color of new cream and a smile I had seen on her face a hundred times before. She looked warm. She looked delighted. She looked like someone who had just won something.

I set plates in front of the guests. I poured wine. I moved efficiently, the way I always did, and no one looked at me directly.

Then Colton stood. The room quieted.

"Before we eat," he said, and his voice dropped into the Alpha tone again, low and steady and impossible to ignore, "I want to make sure our guest of honor feels welcome."

He turned to look at me.

"Lottie," he said. The command was already in his voice before he finished the sentence. "Serve Alianna. And welcome your future Luna."

The compulsion hit me like a hand between my shoulder blades.

I had felt it before — the Alpha tone used as an order, the way it pressed into your muscles and made them move before your brain could argue. It was not pain. It was worse than pain. It was your own body deciding you did not get a vote.

I picked up the serving plate. I walked to the head table. I set it down in front of Alianna.

She looked up at me. She smiled.

"Thank you, Lottie," she said sweetly. "This looks lovely."

I straightened. I looked at the room. Every wolf in it was watching me now, waiting to see what I would do, waiting to see me bend.

I looked at Colton.

Then I looked back at the room, and I said, in a voice so flat it took three seconds for the words to land, "I have never been marked. I hold no Luna title. I owe no Luna's obedience to anyone in this room."

The silence was absolute.

I set the serving spoon on the table.

I walked out.

Behind me, I heard it — just once, just for a second — Colton's aura flickered. Not loud. Not visible. But I felt it through the bond, that hairline crack of something that had been certain and was suddenly not.

I kept walking.

---

I made it to the hallway before Alianna caught up.

She did not run. She walked, heels clicking on the stone floor, and when she got close enough she dropped the smile entirely.

"Wolfless," she said quietly. She leaned in close, the way she used to when we were children and she wanted to make sure I heard every word. "Weak. You were always a placeholder, Lottie. He chose me the second he saw me. He's been waiting for a graceful way to throw you out. This is it. You just made it easier."

I looked at her.

I looked at the dress, at the fresh mark on her neck, at the smile she had been practicing since she was nine years old and learned that cruelty worked best when it looked like kindness.

I said, quietly, "I hope you find out soon what it costs to be chosen by a man who chooses by subtraction."

I walked away.

Alianna stood in the hallway. I heard her breathing change. I did not look back.

I walked to my room, closed the door, and sat on the edge of the bed with Barnaby's head in my lap.

Four more anchors.

Four more days.

Then gone.
