Chapter 2

The double doors of Suite 801 swung open, and Adrian walked into the boardroom with the sharp, commanding stride of a man accustomed to owning every room he entered. Two senior vice presidents trailed behind him, their tablets open, while his chief assistant handed out briefing folders along the mahogany table.

After the lobby encounter, Evelyn had left the triplets with the hotel nanny downstairs rather than bring them anywhere near the meeting.

Evelyn sat at the center of the Sinclair advisory panel, her back straight and her hands clasped loosely over a black leather dossier.

When Adrian looked up from his notes, his steps stopped dead.

The color drained from his face for half a second. His dark eyes locked onto hers, widening with an intensity that fractured his polished composure. Evelyn felt the cold air tighten in her chest, but she did not flinch. She kept her chin lifted and met his gaze without blinking.

Adrian recovered quickly, though his jaw remained rigid. He dismissed his assistants to the opposite side of the table with a curt wave, pulled out the high-backed leather chair directly across from her, and sat down.

"Six years," Adrian said, his voice low, smooth, and edged with cold arrogance. "And you come back the exact moment Sterling finally has something worth taking."

Evelyn offered a thin, professional smile that did not reach her eyes. "I am here in my capacity as lead acquisitions consultant for Sinclair Global. We are evaluating whether Sterling Group is financially stable enough to manage this portfolio."

She slid a thick audit report across the polished wood, stopping it an inch from his hands. "If the numbers do not hold up, Mr. Sterling, you do not get the contract. Let's keep our focus on the balance sheet."

Adrian didn't glance at the folder. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table, his eyes narrowing as he searched her face. "Sinclair wouldn't hire an overseas consultant without a personal recommendation. Who brought you into this city, Evelyn? Are you married?"

"My personal life is not on the agenda," Evelyn said flatly. "Turn to page twelve. Your third-quarter projections show a four percent deficit in operational cash flow."

"You always were good at avoiding questions you didn't want to answer," Adrian murmured, a cynical smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. He leaned back, crossing his arms. He clearly assumed this icy demeanor was nothing more than an act—a calculated move to draw him in. "Still playing the same games."

Before Evelyn could reply, the side door clicked open.

Julian Cross stepped into the suite, holding a pair of takeaway coffee cups. He bypassed the Sterling executives without a glance, walked straight behind Evelyn, and placed a warm latte beside her notepad. He casually rested one hand on the back of her chair and leaned down.

"Sorry I'm late, Evie," Julian said, his voice warm and easy. "The Sinclair board signed off on the revised term sheet. I checked in with the nanny downstairs on my way up. What do the three kids want for lunch? Mia is begging for grilled cheese, but Leo insists on tomato soup."

The pen in Adrian's fingers stopped moving.

Adrian’s head snapped up, his gaze darting from Julian’s hand resting familiar and close behind Evelyn to the calm expression on her face.

*Three kids.*

The words hung in the air like a sudden drop in cabin pressure. Adrian’s dark eyes hardened into flint, his chest rising as a wave of sharp, unreadable tension washed over his features. The smug assurance in his posture vanished entirely, replaced by the grim realization that while he had spent six years building an empire, Evelyn had built an entire life he knew nothing about.

"Soup is fine for Leo," Evelyn answered Julian calmly, never looking back at Adrian. "Tell the nanny we'll be down in forty minutes."

Down in the hotel's mezzanine cafe, the atmosphere was quiet.

Adrian had called a fifteen-minute recess after the first round of financial audits. He stood near the barista counter on the lower level, a tall paper cup of iced espresso in his hand while his assistant rattled off schedule adjustments.

Ten yards away, tucked in a plush velvet booth near the decorative ferns, three pairs of eyes tracked his every move.

"Target has the drink," Leo whispered, adjusting his round glasses. He reached into his small canvas backpack and pulled out a sterile plastic ziplock bag and a pair of silicone tweezers. "We need his saliva. Straw is optimal."

Noah checked the corridor. "Assistant is guarding his left side. Security guard is by the elevators."

Mia smoothed down the skirt of her pink pinafore dress and gave a firm nod. "I will do the distraction."

"Be careful," Noah warned, his voice grave. "Do not get hurt."

Mia took a deep breath, puffed out her cheeks, and trotted across the polished marble floor toward the counter.

She timed her steps with precision. The moment she reached Adrian’s side, she kicked the toe of her left shoe against her right heel, letting out a sharp, theatrical yelp as she stumbled into his tailored trousers.

"Oh no!" Mia squeaked, bumping hard against his knee.

Adrian looked down in surprise, catching his balance.

At the exact same instant, Noah strode up to Adrian's chief assistant with an earnest, wide-eyed expression. "Excuse me, mister! My tablet lost the Wi-Fi. Can you help me find the hotel guest code?"

The assistant blinked, flustered by the sudden appearance of the polite boy blocking his line of sight. "Uh, kid, I'm working right now—"

While the adults were occupied, Leo moved like a shadow.

He slipped past the marble counter, stretched his arm across the low side table where Adrian had set his coffee down to steady the little girl, and clamped the silicone tweezers around the clear plastic straw. With a swift, silent pull, the straw slid out of the plastic lid. Leo dropped it directly into the open ziplock bag, sealed the bag tight, and shoved it deep into his pocket.

"Mission complete," Leo muttered, backing away toward the velvet booth.

"Are you alright, little girl?" Adrian asked, his deep voice carrying a rare trace of hesitation. He looked down at Mia, who was still dusting off her knees.

"I'm fine, thank you, mister!" Mia chirped brightly.

Having accomplished her mission, she spun on her heel to run back to Noah.

But her small sneaker hit a slick patch of freshly polished floor. Her foot slid out from under her, and she tipped backward toward the hard stone edge of the planter.

Adrian reacted before his mind could even process the movement.

His arm shot out, catching Mia securely around her ribcage before she could strike the floor, scooping her up into the crook of his arm.

Mia gasped, her small hands catching the lapels of his charcoal suit to steady herself.

They locked eyes at point-blank range.

Adrian froze.

Staring back at him were a pair of striking hazel-green eyes, flecked with bright gold at the center—a shade so rare, so distinct, that it stopped the breath in his throat. It was the exact, unmistakable color that had belonged to his late mother, a genetic trait recorded in the childhood portraits hanging in the Sterling family estate.

As Mia gave a nervous little grin, a deep dimple pressed into her right cheek.

Adrian's heart hammered against his ribs with sudden, violent force. A wave of absurd, impossible suspicion rushed through his veins, making his grip on the child tighten.

"Who are you?" Adrian whispered, his voice strained and rough. "Who is your mother?"

Before Mia could open her mouth, a small hand gripped her arm with fierce strength.

Noah stepped between them, wrenching his sister out of Adrian's grasp and pulling her behind his back.

The boy looked up at Adrian, his dark eyes freezing cold.

"Don't touch her," Noah said.
