Chapter 3

Evelyn sat at the head of the conference desk in the Sinclair Hotel's executive management office, reviewing the quarterly banquet schedules.

Her administrative manager knocked twice before stepping inside, carrying a thick gold-embossed booking dossier.

"Ms. Sinclair, we received a priority booking for the Grand Ballroom," the manager said, setting the folder down. "The Sterling Group reserved the entire top floor and the banquet hall for an engagement gala tomorrow night."

Evelyn's pen paused above the paper.

"The client requested full five-star confidentiality and premium security protocols," the manager continued, flipping to the signature page. "Adrian Sterling and Vanessa Hunt."

The name landed like ice in her veins.

Six years ago, Vanessa had fabricated the betrayal that shattered Evelyn's world, walking away unscathed while Evelyn fled overseas with three unborn children. Now, the two of them were holding their celebration inside the flagship hotel belonging to Evelyn's own family.

A sharp sting rose in her chest, but Evelyn did not allow her expression to crack. She closed the gold folder and slid it back across the desk.

"Assign our senior banquet director to manage the floor," Evelyn said, her voice steady and professional. "Review their security riders, ensure the catering meets Sinclair standards, and invoice them the standard executive rate. Treat it strictly as business."

The manager looked surprised by her detachment. "No special accommodations?"

"None," Evelyn replied. "A client is a client. We provide the service they pay for."

Ten minutes after the manager left, the office door swung open without a knock.

Vanessa Hunt walked in.

She wore an emerald silk designer dress, a white mink wrap draped over one arm, and a smug smile playing on her lips. She closed the door behind her and walked straight to Evelyn's desk, resting one manicured hand on the edge of the wood.

A massive, brilliant-cut diamond caught the overhead lights, glittering ostentatiously on her ring finger.

"I heard Sinclair sent an acquisitions consultant from the London branch," Vanessa said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "I had to see for myself if you were truly shameless enough to return."

Evelyn leaned back in her chair, her gaze cool. "If you are here to finalize banquet decor, you should be speaking with our event coordinator on the third floor."

Vanessa laughed softly, tapping her diamond against the mahogany surface. "I came to give you some friendly advice, Evelyn. Adrian and I are getting married. Sterling and Hunt are merging our assets."

She leaned down, narrowing her eyes. "Did you really think showing up at a board meeting would make him care? Adrian never searched for you. Not once in six years. Some women are just youthful mistakes, but wives are chosen."

Evelyn didn't look at the ring. She picked up her pen, checked a box on the audit sheet in front of her, and looked directly into Vanessa's eyes.

"The Sterling Group is paying three hundred thousand dollars for the venue rental," Evelyn said calmly. "Our premium service charge covers catering, lighting, and security. It does not include entertaining your personal insecurities."

Vanessa's smile stiffened. "You think you can act superior because your family gave you a title?"

"I am running a business, Vanessa," Evelyn said, standing up and towering over the other woman with effortless composure. "You are paying client number forty-two for this quarter. If you have nothing relevant to add to the contract, walk out before I have security revoke your booking."

Vanessa clenched her jaw, her face flushing with irritation. She pulled her mink wrap tighter around her shoulders, spun on her designer heels, and slammed the door behind her.

That evening, the penthouse apartment was quiet.

Julian sat on the living room sofa with a cup of black coffee, watching Evelyn walk over to the hallway console. She pulled down the small wooden keepsakes box from the top shelf, carried it to the dining table, and opened the lid.

She reached beneath the old letters and pulled out one of the photographs that remained from her youth.

In the picture, a twenty-two-year-old Adrian held her in his arms against the university library steps, laughing with open warmth.

Julian set his cup down. "You don't have to keep staring at it."

Evelyn didn't hesitate. She picked up a pair of brass craft scissors from the drawer. With a single, smooth cut, she sliced the photograph straight down the center.

Adrian's laughing face fell away from hers.

She tossed his half directly into the metal wastebasket beneath the table, keeping only the half that showed her younger self.

"Are you alright?" Julian asked gently.

"I am fine," Evelyn said, looking down at the severed print. "For six years, I wondered what would happen if he ever found out what Vanessa did back then. But today I realized it doesn't matter."

Julian met her gaze. "Why?"

"Even if he learned the truth tomorrow, I still wouldn't go back to him," Evelyn said, her voice clear and resolved. "He didn't lose me because Vanessa lied. He lost me because he believed her."

She closed the wooden box and walked toward the kitchen, leaving the past in the trash where it belonged.

Across the hall, the children's bedroom door was pulled shut.

Noah stood guard by the door, his small arms crossed over his chest, while Leo sat cross-legged on the rug with his mini tablet propped against a stack of storybooks.

Mia knelt beside Leo, holding her stuffed rabbit by one ear, her eyes fixed on the loading screen.

Earlier that afternoon, Leo had used sterile cheek swabs from the test kit on all three of them and sent those samples with Adrian's sealed straw through the hotel's courier service to a private same-day lab.

A soft chime chimed from the tablet speakers.

The green progress bar hit one hundred percent, and a formal laboratory report rendered across the high-resolution display.

*Subject A (Adrian Sterling) / Subjects B-D (Mia Sinclair, Leo Sinclair, Noah Sinclair)*

*Paternity Probability: 99.99% for each child*

*Relationship: Biological Father.*

The room went completely silent.

Noah's jaw tightened, his five-year-old face settling into an expression that looked eerily identical to the man on the report.

Mia blinked, staring at the bold black numbers. She poked Leo's shoulder with her index finger. "So... do we get two Christmas gifts now?"

"No," Noah answered coldly, turning away from the door. "He didn't give us any gifts for five years."

Leo tapped the screen twice, pulling up the hotel intranet system he had accessed through the guest network. A digital floor plan of the Sinclair Grand Ballroom appeared, marked with Adrian Sterling's name and tomorrow's itinerary.

Leo zoomed in on the stage schedule and the private VIP lounge access codes.

"He's having a party on the eighth floor tomorrow night," Leo said quietly, looking up at his brother and sister. "Mom won't tell him, but we can."

Noah stepped over to the tablet and looked down at the bright screen.

"Tomorrow," Noah said, "we ask him ourselves."
