Chapter 2

I waited until Leon left for the gym. He kissed my cheek on his way out, gym bag over his shoulder, and said he'd be back in an hour. The door closed. I heard his footsteps fade down the hall.

I walked to the garage.

The Tesla sat there in the dim light. White paint. Chrome trim. Silent.

I opened the driver's door and climbed in. The seat adjusted automatically. The screen lit up with my name.

I sat there for a minute. My hands rested on the steering wheel. The baby kicked once, hard, right under my ribs.

I opened the Tesla app on my phone. I'd already looked at the trip logs a dozen times. I had screenshots of every route, every timestamp, every minute Leon's car spent parked outside Lacey's building while he told me he was working late.

But there was more.

I scrolled past the battery settings, past the climate controls, past the security tab. I found the Sentry Mode archive. The cabin camera recordings were stored in the cloud, synced automatically. I tapped the folder.

A list of files appeared. Most were labeled with dates and times. A few had no label at all.

I tapped the first unnamed file.

It was timestamped three weeks ago. 11:43 p.m.

I pressed play.

Static crackled through my phone speaker. Then voices.

Leon's voice.

"God, I needed this."

A woman's laugh. Light. Familiar.

Lacey.

"Long day?" she said.

"Long week," Leon replied. "Shelby's been… a lot lately."

"She's pregnant," Lacey said. Her tone was amused. "What did you expect?"

"I know, I know." Leon sighed. There was a rustling sound. Movement. "I just need to get through the next few months."

"And then?"

A pause.

"Once the baby's here and the custody clock starts, I'll file. She won't see it coming. We just need to be patient a few more months."

My stomach twisted.

Lacey's voice again, lighter now, almost bored. "She's so trusting it's almost sad. Just keep doing what you're doing."

Leon laughed. A low, easy sound. The same laugh I'd heard a thousand times across the dinner table.

"You're terrible," he said.

"You love it," Lacey replied.

More rustling. A soft sound that might have been a kiss.

The file ended.

I sat there. The phone was still in my hand. The screen had gone dark.

I opened the car door and stumbled out. My legs felt weak. I made it three steps before I bent over and vomited on the garage floor.

I stayed there on my hands and knees. One hand pressed flat against the cold concrete. The other on my belly.

The baby kicked.

I threw up again.

When there was nothing left, I sat back against the garage wall. My throat burned. My eyes burned. I pulled my knees up as far as my belly would allow and wrapped my arms around them.

I don't know how long I sat there. Ten minutes. Twenty.

The audio kept playing in my head. Leon's voice. Lacey's laugh. *She's so trusting it's almost sad.*

I pressed my palms against my eyes and tried to breathe.

Eventually I stood up. My legs shook. I walked back into the house and went straight to the bathroom. I locked the door. I turned on the shower as hot as it would go and let the steam fill the room.

Then I sat on the floor and cried.

I cried until my ribs hurt. Until my throat was raw. Until the water ran cold and the mirror fogged over completely.

When I finally stopped, I sat there in the silence. The only sound was the drip of the showerhead.

I thought about Leon coming home in twenty minutes. I thought about him asking how my morning was. I thought about sitting across from him at lunch and smiling.

I thought about Lacey texting me later to ask how I was feeling.

And I made a decision.

I would not confront him.

I would not scream. I would not cry in front of him. I would not give him the chance to spin this, to lie, to make me feel crazy.

I would not let Lacey know I knew.

I would smile. I would cook his favorite meals. I would let him kiss my forehead and ask about the baby. I would let Lacey send me articles about nursery decor and maternity yoga.

And I would gather every piece of evidence I could find.

I stood up. I washed my face. I brushed my teeth. I looked at myself in the mirror.

My eyes were red. My face was blotchy.

I opened the medicine cabinet and pulled out concealer.

By the time Leon came home, I was in the kitchen. I had eggs Benedict plated and waiting. Hollandaise sauce in a small bowl. Fresh chives on top.

He walked in, hair damp from the gym shower, and smiled.

"Babe, you didn't have to do this."

"I wanted to," I said. I set the plate in front of him. "You've been working so hard lately."

He sat down and pulled out his phone. He scrolled while he ate.

I poured myself a glass of water and sat across from him.

"How was your workout?" I asked.

"Good," he said, not looking up. "Ran three miles. Feel great."

"That's good," I said.

He glanced at me and smiled. "You okay? You look a little tired."

"Just didn't sleep well," I said. "The baby was kicking all night."

"Aw." He reached across the table and squeezed my hand. "Get some rest today, okay?"

"I will."

He went back to his phone.

I sat there and watched him eat. I watched him chew. I watched him scroll. I watched him smile at something on his screen.

And I felt nothing.

No, that wasn't true.

I felt cold.

I felt clear.

I felt like the most dangerous thing in the room.
