Chapter 3

I made chamomile tea I didn't drink.

The mug sat on the kitchen counter while I worked at my laptop. Steam rose and faded. The tea went cold. I needed the warmth in my hands more than the taste.

I opened a new file on my laptop. Color-coded. Date stamps on the left. Location data in the middle. Legal relevance notes on the right. Years of PR crisis management had taught me how to organize information that mattered. I'd done it for clients a hundred times. Now I was doing it for myself.

I uploaded the audio file first. The one where Leon's voice said *once the baby's here and the custody clock starts, I'll file.* The one where Lacey laughed and called me trusting like it was a joke.

I saved it to three separate cloud accounts. Google Drive. Dropbox. iCloud. I labeled each file with the timestamp and added notes: *Recorded via Tesla cabin camera. Cloud-synced. Legally obtained from vehicle registered in my name.*

Then I went through every screenshot I'd taken from the Tesla app. Forty-seven trips. All to Lacey's address. All on nights Leon said he was working late. I cross-referenced each trip against my text messages with him.

March 14, 11:47 p.m. to 1:32 a.m. His text at 11:30: *Still at the office babe. Don't wait up.*

March 16, 10:15 p.m. to 2:04 a.m. His text at 10:00: *Client call running long. Love you.*

March 18, 9:50 p.m. to 1:18 a.m. His text at 9:45: *Grabbing dinner with the team. Be home late.*

I logged every single one. Time. Location. His lie. The truth.

The baby kicked. I pressed my hand against my belly and kept typing.

I found the Tesla purchase agreement in Leon's filing cabinet. He kept all the car paperwork in a folder labeled *Tesla—Shelby.* I pulled it out and flipped through the pages.

Registered owner: Shelby Gardner.

Primary driver: Shelby Gardner.

Emergency contact: Lacey Fox.

I stared at her name.

Not me. Not his pregnant wife. Not the woman whose name was on the title.

Lacey Fox.

My hands shook. I set the paper down on the desk and walked to the bathroom. I locked the door. I turned on the faucet and gripped the edge of the sink.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to call him right now and ask him why. I wanted to drive to Lacey's apartment and throw the contract in her face.

But I didn't.

I turned off the faucet. I dried my hands. I walked back to the desk and photographed every page of the agreement. Front and back. Clear, high-resolution images.

I saved them to the same three cloud accounts.

I added a note: *Emergency contact listed as Lacey Fox, not spouse. Demonstrates premeditation and established relationship prior to vehicle purchase.*

Then I closed the laptop and made another cup of tea I wouldn't drink.

The referral came from a college friend I hadn't spoken to in two years. I texted her carefully. *Hey, random question—do you know any good family lawyers? For a friend.*

She replied an hour later. *Diane Whitfield. Discreet. Tough. I'll text you her info.*

I called from the car, parked in a grocery store lot three miles from home. The receptionist answered on the second ring. I scheduled a consultation for Thursday at 2 p.m. I used my maiden name. I paid the retainer fee from an old checking account Leon didn't know I still had.

Thursday afternoon, I told Leon I had a prenatal checkup. He kissed my forehead and told me to text him after. I said I would.

I drove to a glass office building in Century City. Tenth floor. Quiet hallway. A brass plaque beside the door: *Whitfield Family Law.*

The receptionist smiled and offered me water. I sat in the waiting room with my hands folded over my belly. The baby kicked twice. I breathed slowly.

Diane Whitfield was younger than I expected. Maybe forty. Sharp gray suit. Dark hair pulled back. She shook my hand and gestured to a chair.

"Thank you for seeing me," I said.

"Of course." She sat across from me. "What can I help you with?"

I opened my bag and pulled out a folder. I'd printed everything. Trip logs. Screenshots. The purchase agreement. A transcript of the audio file I'd typed out myself, word for word.

I set the folder on her desk.

"My husband is having an affair with my best friend," I said. My voice was calm. Steady. "They're planning to wait until after I give birth, then file for divorce on his terms. I have evidence. I need to know if it's enough."

Diane opened the folder. She flipped through the first few pages. Then she stopped and looked up at me.

"How far along are you?"

"Six months."

She nodded slowly. She kept reading.

I sat there and watched her face. She didn't react much. A slight tightening around her eyes when she reached the emergency contact page. A pause when she read the transcript.

Finally she closed the folder and folded her hands on top of it.

"This is all legally obtained?"

"Yes," I said. "The car is registered in my name. The app is on my phone. The recordings are cloud-synced from a vehicle I own."

"And he doesn't know you have this."

"No."

Diane leaned back in her chair. She looked at me for a long moment.

"This is very good work," she said quietly. "Most people come in here emotional, scattered, with half a story. You've built a case."

I didn't say anything.

"Here's what I need you to do," she continued. "Keep documenting. If there are more trips, more recordings, save them. Do not confront him. Do not tell anyone—not your mother, not a friend, no one—what you're planning. Maintain the appearance of a stable marriage. Can you do that?"

"Yes," I said.

"How are you holding up?"

I looked down at my hands. They were folded in my lap. Steady.

"I'm fine," I said.

Diane's expression softened slightly. "You don't have to be."

I met her eyes. "Yes, I do."

She nodded. She understood.

"We'll wait until after the baby is born," she said. "It strengthens your position. In the meantime, keep doing exactly what you're doing. And call me if anything changes."

I stood. We shook hands.

"Thank you," I said.

"You're going to be okay," Diane said.

I walked out of her office, down the quiet hallway, into the elevator. The doors closed. I was alone.

I pressed my hand against my belly. The baby kicked.

"We're going to be okay," I whispered.

Then I drove home, walked into the kitchen, and started making dinner.

Leon came home an hour later. He kissed the top of my head and asked how the checkup went.

"Great," I said. "Everything's perfect."

He smiled and sat down at the table.

I set his plate in front of him and watched him eat.

And I felt nothing but cold, clear certainty.
