I Caught My Husband In Bed With The Nanny

Returning home early from Singapore, I discovered the nanny had taken over my life—sleeping in my bed, wearing my clothes, and coaching my five-year-old to call her Mommy. My husband Killian had lavished nearly two million on her, then forged my signature to bury me in debt and fight for custody. Armed with every secret he’d hidden, I dismantled his empire piece by piece. Now he kneels, begging for a second chance he’ll never get.

Chapter 2

I didn't go to a hotel.

I drove to the apartment on Bleecker Street. The one I bought with my first bonus, three years before I married Killian. The one he always called "your little shoebox."

The key still worked. The air smelled like dust and old lavender.

I set the carry-on down by the door. The stuffed tiger's ear poked out of the zipper. I pushed it back in.

Hugo knocked twenty minutes later.

When I opened the door, he just stood there for a second. Gray hoodie. Laptop bag over one shoulder. His hair was shorter than I remembered, and there was a little gray at the temples now.

"Six years," he said.

"I know."

"You look terrible."

I laughed. It came out wet. "Thanks, Hugo."

He stepped inside and didn't hug me. He put his bag on the kitchen counter and pulled out the laptop like he'd done this a hundred times.

"Tell me what you saw. All of it. Don't make it pretty."

So I told him. The bed. The closet. Leo running past me. "Mommy Blair."

His jaw went tight at that last part. He didn't say anything. He just typed.

"Joint accounts," he said. "Give me every one you know about."

"Chase checking. The Fidelity brokerage. The savings at First Republic—well, it moved to JPMorgan after the collapse. And the house is in both our names."

"Login access?"

"Killian handled the household money." I heard how it sounded the second I said it. "I was traveling. It was easier."

Hugo glanced up at me over the screen. Just a glance. But I felt it.

"Okay," he said. "Then let's see what easier cost you."

We sat at my tiny kitchen table until two in the morning. He pulled statements. I pulled passwords out of my memory and old emails. The numbers blurred together.

At 2:14, his phone buzzed.

He read it. Then he read it again.

"That's Dana," he said. "My partner at the firm. I sent her the account numbers on the drive over. She's a night owl."

"And?"

He turned the phone toward me.

*Hugo. This is bad. Over the past 12 months, at least $1.8M moved out of marital accounts. Wire transfers to an account under Blair Donnelly. Charges at Cartier, Hermès, Bergdorf. And deposits on two condos—one in Jersey City, one in Miami. Both titled to an LLC. Tell your client to freeze everything she can before morning.*

I stared at the screen.

One point eight million.

"The Miami condo," I said slowly. "He told me that was a client's property. He said he was helping with the paperwork."

"He was," Hugo said. "His own."

I got up. I didn't know where I was going. I ended up at the sink, running water over my hands for no reason.

"I paid for those pearls," I said to the faucet. "The ones on my vanity. I paid for her pearls."

"Nora."

"I flew to Singapore to close a deal so we could pay off the house early. And he was buying her jewelry with the money."

"Nora. Sit down."

I turned off the water. My hands were red.

Before I could sit, my own phone lit up on the counter.

An email. From Ms. Patel, Leo's kindergarten teacher.

*Mrs. Moreau, I'm sorry to write so late. I've gone back and forth about this for weeks. I didn't know if it was my place. But I think you need to see it. I recorded it on Tuesday at pickup.*

There was a video attached.

My thumb shook as I pressed play.

The school gate. Kids running out. Blair crouching down in a pink coat, arms open. Leo running into them.

"Hi, my brave boy! Did you miss me?"

"Is Mommy coming today?" Leo asked.

Blair's smile didn't move. "Oh, sweetie. You know Mommy's busy. She's always busy. She has more important things than us."

"More important than me?"

"I'm not saying that." Blair tucked his hair behind his ear. "But she did miss your play, didn't she? And your birthday dinner? I was there. I'm always there."

Leo looked at his shoes.

"Mommy doesn't really like being home," Blair said softly. "That's okay. You have me. You can tell me anything. You don't have to tell her things, okay? She'll just get upset."

"Okay, Mommy Blair."

"Good boy."

The video ended.

I didn't cry. I thought I would. Instead I just sat down, very carefully, like the chair might break.

"I wasn't at his birthday dinner," I said, "because Killian moved it. He moved it to the day I flew out. He told me the restaurant had a booking problem."

Hugo closed the laptop halfway.

"She's been building a case," he said quietly. "In your son's head."

"She's been teaching him to keep secrets from me." My voice rose. "He's five, Hugo. He's five."

"I know."

"You don't know. You don't have kids. You don't know what it's like to watch your own son—"

I stopped. My throat closed.

Hugo didn't argue. He slid a glass of water across the table toward me and waited.

I drank half of it.

Then my phone buzzed again.

Blair.

A long message this time. I almost didn't open it. But I did.

*Mrs. Moreau, I'm so sorry about tonight. Truly. I never wanted you to find out like this. I hope one day you can forgive me. I know it's hard. But Killian and I really love each other. He's already told me he's filing for divorce, and he promised we'll get married next spring. He wants Leo to have a real family, with a mom who's actually present. We were thinking Leo could take my last name eventually—Donnelly sounds so sweet, doesn't it? He already calls me Mom. I just think it'll be less confusing for him. I hope you understand. I really do want us to be friendly. For Leo's sake. 💕*

I read it twice.

Then I handed the phone to Hugo.

He read it. His eyebrows went up and stayed there.

"A heart emoji," he said.

"A heart emoji."

"She wants to change his name."

"She wants to change his *mother*." I stood up. This time I knew exactly where I was going. I walked to the window and back. "You know what I was thinking, on the drive over? Before I called you?"

"Tell me."

"I was thinking maybe I'd been gone too much. Maybe we could do counseling. Maybe I could cut back on travel, and Killian and I could—" I shook my head. "I was going to *fix* it. I was going to apologize to him."

Hugo didn't say I told you so. He'd earned the right six years ago. He still didn't say it.

"And now?" he asked.

I looked at the message one more time. *Donnelly sounds so sweet.*

"Now I want everything," I said. "Every transfer. Every hotel. Every lie. I want to know what else he's hiding."

"Then you need more than bank statements." Hugo pulled out his phone and scrolled. "I know a guy. Ray Kowalczyk. Ex-NYPD. He's done three cases for the firm. He's quiet, and he's very, very thorough."

"Call him."

"It's two-thirty in the morning."

"Call him, Hugo."

He looked at me for a long second. Then the corner of his mouth lifted.

"There she is," he said. And he dialed.

It rang four times. A gravelly voice answered. "This better be a body."

"Ray, it's Hugo Larkin. I've got a client. Putting you on speaker."

I leaned toward the phone. "Mr. Kowalczyk, my name is Nora Moreau."

"Moreau." A pause. "Like Moreau Capital?"

"That's my husband's firm."

"Huh. Okay. What do you need?"

I didn't hesitate.

"Three things. First, proof of the affair. Dates, places, photos. Second, every dollar he's moved out of our marriage. Where it went, who's holding it. Third—" I looked at Hugo. He nodded. "Everything shady at Moreau Capital. Every off-book deal. Every favor. Every account he thinks nobody's looking at."

Ray let out a low whistle. "That third one's a big ask, Mrs. Moreau. Guys like your husband don't like people digging there."

"I don't care what he likes."

"You will," Ray said, "if I find what I think I'm gonna find."

The line went quiet.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"I mean I've heard the name Moreau before," Ray said slowly. "Last year. On a different job. And it wasn't about cheating."

My grip tightened on the edge of the table.

"What was it about?"

"Not on the phone," Ray said. "Meet me tomorrow. Bring the lawyer. And Mrs. Moreau?"

"Yes?"

"Don't let your husband know you've hired anybody. Not a hint. If he's who I think he is—" He stopped. "Just don't."

The call ended.

Hugo and I stared at each other across the little kitchen table.

Then my phone lit up one more time.

Killian.

*We need to talk. Come home. Alone.*
