I Caught My Husband In Bed With The Nanny

Returning home early from Singapore, I discovered the nanny had taken over my life—sleeping in my bed, wearing my clothes, and coaching my five-year-old to call her Mommy. My husband Killian had lavished nearly two million on her, then forged my signature to bury me in debt and fight for custody. Armed with every secret he’d hidden, I dismantled his empire piece by piece. Now he kneels, begging for a second chance he’ll never get.

Chapter 3

I didn't go home alone.

I went to Moreau Capital at ten the next morning, and Hugo walked in beside me.

Killian was waiting in the glass conference room on the forty-second floor. Navy suit. Fresh shave. He looked like a man who'd slept eight hours.

His eyes went straight to Hugo.

"I said alone."

"You said come home," I said. "This isn't home."

Hugo set his briefcase on the table. "Hugo Larkin. I represent Mrs. Moreau."

"Larkin." Killian's mouth twisted. "Of course. The best man who never was."

"Let's keep it professional," Hugo said.

Killian slid a thick folder across the glass. It stopped right in front of me.

"I had Gordon draw this up last night. It's fair."

I opened it.

Three hundred thousand dollars. One lump payment.

The house: Killian.

My shares in the firm, the ones I'd earned helping him build it: Killian.

Leo: Killian. Primary physical custody.

And on page six, in neat legal type: *Day-to-day childcare shall be provided by Ms. Blair Donnelly.*

I read that line three times.

"You put her in the contract," I said.

"She's good with him. You saw it yourself."

"I saw her in my bed."

"Nora." He sighed, like I was being difficult on purpose. "Leo needs stability. You're on a plane every other week. Be honest for once."

Hugo flipped to the last page and tapped it. "Three hundred thousand. Out of an estate worth north of forty million."

"She'll keep her salary."

"Her salary," Hugo said, "from a company she co-founded."

Killian ignored him. He leaned toward me, and his voice went soft. The voice from years ago.

"Do you remember Montauk? That first summer? We split one lobster roll because we were broke, and you said you didn't care if we never had money, as long as—"

"Don't," I said.

"—as long as we had each other. You said that, Nora. I'm just asking you to remember who we were. Don't drag this through court. Don't make Leo watch his parents tear each other apart."

My throat burned. He knew exactly where to press. He always had.

"Remember the night I proposed? On the fire escape? You cried so hard you got mascara on my—"

Hugo's palm came down flat on the table. Not loud. Just final.

"Mr. Moreau. My client isn't here for a slideshow. If you want to discuss terms, discuss terms. If you want to reminisce, buy a scrapbook."

Killian's ears went red. "This is between me and my wife."

"Not anymore," Hugo said. "Now it's between you and me."

For a long moment, nobody moved.

Then I closed the folder. I let my shoulders sag. I pressed my fingers to my eyes and held them there.

"Nora?" Hugo said quietly.

"I'm tired," I said. My voice came out small. I made sure it did. "I'm so tired, Killian."

Killian went still. He was listening now.

"I don't want a war," I said. "I don't want Leo in a courtroom. Maybe you're right. Maybe I haven't been there."

Under the table, Hugo's knee bumped mine. Once. He understood.

"So you'll sign?" Killian asked.

"I'll negotiate. Through Hugo. But I'm not fighting you on custody." I swallowed. This part was real, and it tasted like rust. "And I'll take fewer visits. Every other weekend. Maybe once a month while I'm traveling. He's—" My voice cracked for real. "He's happier with her anyway."

Killian blinked. For one second, something like guilt crossed his face.

Then it was gone. He smiled.

"That's very mature of you, Nora. Really."

I nodded and looked at the floor so he wouldn't see my eyes.

In the elevator, Hugo didn't speak until the doors shut.

"Once a month," he said.

"I know."

"That's going to hurt."

"It already does." I watched the numbers drop. "Let him feel safe, Hugo. Safe men get lazy."

---

He got lazy fast.

Within a week, Blair was at Moreau Capital three days out of five. Ray sent me photos. Blair in a cream coat at the front desk. Blair in Killian's corner office with her feet on the couch.

Then Killian's assistant, Marisol, called me. I'd hired Marisol myself, years ago.

"Mrs. Moreau, I'm sorry to bother you." She was whispering. "She told me to reorganize his calendar. She said, and I'm quoting, 'Get used to taking orders from me, sweetie. I'll be the boss's wife by spring.'"

"What did you say?"

"I said yes, ma'am." A pause. "Then I went to the bathroom and called you."

"Thank you, Marisol. Keep saying yes."

The following Friday was the Harborline charity gala. Half of Manhattan's finance crowd in one ballroom.

I didn't go. Hugo's partner, Dana, went for me.

She called at eleven that night.

"Your husband walked in with her on his arm. Not hiding it. She wore red, Nora. Floor-length."

"Of course she did."

"And she's working the room. I heard her tell the Lindqvist wife that you left Leo with a fever to fly to Singapore. That you called him a distraction. That you never wanted children at all."

I laughed. Dana went quiet on the other end.

"Sorry," I said. "It's just—I was holding his head over the toilet at three a.m. when he had the stomach flu. Killian slept through it."

"People are buying it," Dana said. "You're the ice queen in this story."

"Let them buy it," I said. "I'm buying something better."

---

Ray met me in a diner on Ninth Avenue the next Tuesday. He was older than his voice, with a bent nose and a wedding ring worn thin.

"Your husband's gotten comfortable," he said, stirring sugar into black coffee. "He's keeping the real stuff on a desktop in his office. Not the network. Private machine. He thinks that makes it safe."

"How do you know?"

"Because his assistant saw him printing tax papers off it with the door locked. And because guys like him always think air-gapped means invisible."

"Can you get to it?"

Ray tapped the table. "Building security changes shifts at one-forty a.m. Seven-minute gap on forty-two while the new guard does his walk on the lower floors. Badge reader on his office is old. Easy."

"Seven minutes isn't long."

"It's plenty," he said. "If nobody's in there making out on the couch."

I almost smiled.

"When?"

"Thursday. Your husband's flying to Miami with the girlfriend." He glanced up. "Looking at condos, I'd guess."

---

Thursday night, I didn't sleep.

I sat on the floor of the Bleecker Street apartment with the stuffed tiger in my lap. Hugo sat at the kitchen table, pretending to read briefs.

At 1:39, my phone buzzed.

*In.*

At 1:43:

*Found it. Copying.*

Hugo looked up. Neither of us said anything.

At 1:46, nothing came.

At 1:47, nothing.

I squeezed the tiger so hard one seam popped.

At 1:48, the phone lit up.

*Out. Clean. Got everything. Hotel receipts, wire transfers, the Donnelly account, two years of tax filings that don't match the real books, and side contracts with a shipping company that is NOT supposed to be doing business with him.*

I let out a sound that wasn't quite a sob.

Hugo was beside me before I knew he'd stood up. He read the screen over my shoulder.

"That's it," he said. "That's the whole thing."

Then another message came in.

*Mrs. Moreau. One more thing. There's a folder on his desktop with your name on it. Password-locked. I copied it anyway.*

*It's dated three weeks before you left for Singapore.*

It took three seconds for me to realize the woman he was trying to pay off was wearing my missing vintage Chanel earrings. Damian looked me in the eye, using his best doctor's voice. "She is struggling, Ainsley. She has five boys to feed." When Casey walked in, she wasn't wearing a uniform. She was wearing my jewelry and looking at my husband with intimate familiarity. Instead of apologizing when I confronted them, Damian protected her. He looked at me with a mixture of pity and disgust. "She is a good mother," he sneered. "Something you wouldn't understand." He used the infertility I had spent millions trying to cure as a weapon against me. He didn't know that I had just received the investigator's file. The file that proved those five boys were his. The file that proved he had gotten a secret vasectomy six months before we started trying for a baby. I looked at the man I had shielded from the violence of my world so he could play god in a white coat. I didn't scream. I am a Pierce. We execute. I picked up my phone and dialed my enforcer.
