Chapter 1

She signed his green card.

She signed the deed of his first house.

She signed the work permit that let his mistress walk into their kitchen and call her sister.

For eighteen years Mara Quill worked three jobs, paid the tuition, paid the down payment, paid the hospital bill the night their son was born.

Last year Daniel made tenure and put the house in his name and the other woman's.

Their son texted the family chat, telling his mother to stop causing drama, asking if she had any idea how much Auntie Lin had done for this family.

Mara didn't argue.

She joined the agency that hands out the papers.

Last month a naturalization file slid across her desk, and Daniel walked the woman in, and only at the window did he see who was sitting behind the glass.

Mara opened the folder.

The old sponsorship letter was still clipped inside, her signature dry on the page.

She didn't raise her voice.

The status in this country, she told the woman, came from her hand.

And today, with the same authority, she was taking it back.

She closed the folder before either of them could breathe.

"Name and appointment time," I said into the intercom microphone, keeping my eyes fixed on my keyboard.

The person on the other side of the bulletproof glass didn't answer.

I looked up and found my husband, Daniel Quill, frozen in the waiting room. His right arm was wrapped tightly around Sara Cole's waist, holding her close to his side.

"Mara?" Daniel asked. His voice cracked through the cheap desk speaker.

"Window four handles naturalization interviews," I said. My tone stayed completely flat. "Passports and appointment notices, please."

Sara Cole leaned into Daniel's shoulder. She wore a tailored beige trench coat, the exact one I had admired in a catalog last month but put back because of the price.

"Danny, is that her? Your wife?" Sara asked, her fingers clutching his lapel.

"Mara, listen to me," Daniel said, stepping right up to the glass.

I didn't answer. That exact phrase hadn't changed in over a decade.

"Passports," I repeated.

Daniel dropped his arm from Sara's waist and slid a thick manila envelope through the narrow gap under the window.

"You shouldn't be working this window," he whispered, leaning close to the speaker so the rest of the waiting room couldn't hear. "This is a conflict of interest."

"You shouldn't have brought your mistress to my workplace," I countered.

"She's not my mistress," he snapped, his jaw tightening. "She's family."

I pulled open my bottom desk drawer to grab a red pen. My knuckles brushed against a faded yellow slip of paper taped to the inside of the plastic tray. It was an eighteen-year-old bank receipt. The amount printed in faded black ink read $40,000.

I had mortgaged my apartment to get that money. I worked three jobs—waitressing, tutoring, and overnight data entry—just to pay off his PhD tuition and the down payment for our first house.

"Family," I echoed, closing the drawer.

"She's all alone, Mara. Have a heart."

He had used those exact words twelve years ago when he first brought Sara into our living room, asking me to sign a sponsorship letter so she could get a work permit.

"She has you," I said. "And apparently, she has my house."

Daniel flinched. "I told you, transferring the deed to me and Sara last year was purely for tax purposes. It happened right after I got tenure. My accountant suggested it."

"Your accountant suggested removing your wife from the property deed?"

"Sara needed the equity to start her bakery," he argued, his face flushing red. "You have a stable government job. You don't need the credit boost."

My phone lit up next to my keyboard. A new notification popped up on the lock screen from our family group chat.

It was from Caleb, our son.

Mom, stop making a scene. Do you know how much Aunt Sara has sacrificed for this family?

I stared at the glowing letters. He called her Aunt Sara. He called me "Mom" only when he wanted to scold me.

"Did you tell Caleb to text me?" I asked, pointing a finger at the screen.

Daniel rubbed the bridge of his nose. "He just wants peace. We all do. He knows Sara has her interview today. He wants her to pass."

"He thinks I'm making a scene," I said.

"Aren't you?" Daniel asked, his voice hardening. "You're holding her paperwork hostage."

Sara stepped up to the glass, nudging Daniel aside. "Mara, please. I don't want to cause trouble between you two. Danny just wanted to help me get my citizenship so I can visit my sick mother."

"Danny," I said, testing the nickname. I tapped my fingernail against the thick naturalization file resting under my palm. "He is very helpful. He helped you get a house. He helped you get a business."

"Mara, stop acting like this," Daniel warned. His patience was completely gone. "You signed her original sponsorship letter twelve years ago. You brought her into this country. You agreed to this."

"I signed a piece of paper so a desperate stranger could get a work permit," I said. "I didn't sign up to fund my husband's second family."

"Keep your voice down," Daniel hissed, glancing nervously at the empty waiting chairs behind him. "Are you going to process the interview or do I need to call your supervisor?"

"Call him," I challenged. "Tell him your husband is demanding I approve his mistress's application."

Daniel slammed his palm against the counter. "You wouldn't."

"Wouldn't I?"

"You'll lose your job," he said. "You'll lose your pension."

"I already lost my husband," I said. "And my son."

"Don't bring Caleb into this," Daniel snapped.

"He brought himself into it," I replied, grabbing my phone and holding the screen up to the glass. "He thinks Sara is the one making sacrifices. What exactly has she sacrificed, Daniel? My marriage? My home?"

Sara started to cry. Real, heavy tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I'm sorry," she sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "I'll leave. I don't need the citizenship."

"No, you stay right here," Daniel ordered, grabbing her arm. He glared at me through the partition. "Process the damn file, Mara. Do your job."

I looked down at the heavy folder resting under my hand. I hadn't opened it yet.

My finger traced the edge of the file cover. Pinned to the front was my official transfer letter. The red ink from my stamp—USCIS Immigration Adjudicator Mara Quill—pressed directly over the faded photocopy of my old signature from twelve years ago.

"You think you hold all the cards," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a low, mocking tone. "But you don't. Caleb is moving into Sara's bakery next week. He wants to work with her. If you deny this application, you'll never see him again."

My stomach tightened. I forced my face to remain perfectly still.

"Is that a threat?" I asked.

"It's reality," Daniel said. "Stamp the approval."

I slid the file closer to the edge of my desk.

"Mara, don't do something you'll regret," Daniel added, his palms pressing flat against the glass.

I didn't look at him. I flipped the heavy cardstock cover open.

There, clipped to the very first page, was the original sponsorship letter from twelve years ago.

I pulled out my heavy brass fountain pen.

The metal nib hovered right above the empty box labeled Decision.

I spent ten years as the ward of Kason Oneal, the ruthless Underboss of the city's most dangerous crime family. He saved me when I was a child, raised me, and made me believe I was his queen. But the moment his ex-girlfriend, Dalia, returned, the illusion shattered. Kason demanded I return the jade pendant—the one he had hand-carved for my sixteenth birthday—just so he could hang it around Dalia's neck. To him, I was suddenly nothing more than a placeholder who had kept his bed warm. The cruelty didn't stop there. He stood by and watched as Dalia shredded my clothes with scissors, laughing at my tears. When I collapsed on the floor in agony from acute appendicitis, Kason didn't call an ambulance. Instead, he dragged me to a shady clinic, accusing me of faking a pregnancy to trap him. He ordered the doctor to "terminate it" while I was dying of sepsis on the table. He called me trash. He called me property. He stripped away every ounce of dignity I had left, all to please a woman who was lying to his face. I realized then that the hero who saved me when I was ten was dead. I was done begging for scraps of affection from a monster. Trembling, I walked to the phone and dialed the number of the one man Kason feared most—his sworn enemy, Hadley Payne. "Tell him yes," I whispered into the receiver. "I accept the arrangement. I will marry him." Kason thought he could break me. Instead, he was about to watch his "property" become the Queen of the rival family.
