Chapter 2

The brass nib of my fountain pen hovered a fraction of an inch above the empty box labeled Decision. Black ink pooled at the tip, ready to make Sara Cole a permanent fixture in my country, just as she was in my marriage.

I stared at the paper. Then, I twisted the cap back onto the pen. The metal clicked shut.

I reached for the PA microphone button. "Ticket number forty-two to window four."

Daniel slammed his open palm against the bulletproof glass. The loud smack echoed across the quiet waiting room. Several heads turned.

"What are you doing?" he demanded, pressing his face close to the speaker. "Just process the paperwork, Mara. Go through the motions. That's all you have to do."

His voice carried that familiar, low, pleading pitch. Eighteen years ago, he used that exact tone in our cramped studio apartment. I spent the next four years working the supermarket night shift, hauling plates at a diner until dusk, and filing tax returns on weekends. Every meager paycheck went straight into a rusted tin box to fund his PhD. That box still sits on a shelf in our garage, stuffed with faded proof of my blind loyalty.

I met his gaze through the thick partition. "The naturalization interview requires a sworn personal statement from the applicant. Accompanying persons, please step back to the waiting area."

Daniel's jaw dropped. "Are you out of your mind? I am your husband."

"You are a spectator in a federal immigration facility," I corrected. "Step away from the yellow line."

He didn't move. He planted his feet on the worn carpet, crossing his arms over his chest. "I'm not going anywhere until you stamp that file."

"Security is two doors down," I offered, gesturing toward the hallway. "Would you like me to press the silent alarm, or will you take a seat?"

Sara's fingers tightened around the fabric of Daniel's sleeve. She shrank against his side, her large eyes darting between us.

"Mara," Sara murmured, her voice trembling through the intercom. "Please don't fight with Danny because of me."

The false warmth scraped against my nerves. She had spoken to me that way since the day Daniel brought her to our front door.

"My name is Officer Quill," I said, shifting my attention solely to her. "If you want to proceed with your interview, your companion needs to vacate the immediate area. Now."

Daniel glared at me, his chest rising and falling in sharp, angry rhythms. The power dynamic hung in the air between us, thick and undeniable. For the first time in our entire relationship, I held the absolute upper hand. The thick pane of safety glass separated his demands from my authority.

"Fine," Daniel spat. He pointed a finger at the glass. "But we aren't done talking about this."

He stepped back, retreating to a row of plastic chairs against the far wall. He sat down heavily, his eyes never leaving my window.

Sara stood alone at the counter. She pulled her beige trench coat tighter around her waist, looking small and fragile.

"Place your left index finger on the green scanner," I instructed.

She obeyed, her hand shaking slightly as the machine beeped.

I turned to my monitor and typed her alien registration number into the database. Her digital file populated on the screen, a long list of addresses, tax records, and past applications. I scrolled past the initial sponsorship forms from twelve years ago.

A recent entry caught my attention.

"You applied for a state business subsidy last October," I noted, reading the screen.

Sara shifted her weight from one foot to the other. "Danny helped me fill out the forms for the bakery. It was just a small grant."

I checked the submission date. It was filed the exact same week Daniel transferred the deed of my house into both of their names.

"You claimed family financial hardship," I read aloud. "How did you qualify for a low-income hardship grant while simultaneously acquiring a four-bedroom property in the suburbs?"

Sara swallowed hard. "The accountant handled the details. I don't know how the numbers work, Officer Quill."

"The numbers are very clear," I said, clicking into the supplementary documents folder. "You claimed zero personal assets and listed a primary dependent."

"My mother is very sick back home," she rushed to explain. "I send her money every month. That's why I need this citizenship. So I can travel to see her without losing my bakery."

I ignored her excuse and clicked on the employment history tab of the grant application. A specific line of text jumped out at me.

"You listed a former employer here to prove loss of income," I said, tracing my finger along the monitor. "Mara Quill."

Sara froze. Her eyes widened, darting toward Daniel in the waiting area, then back to me.

"I never employed you," I stated. "I signed a sponsorship letter. That does not make me your employer."

"Danny said it was the easiest way to prove I had local work history," she stammered, her voice dropping to a panicked whisper. "He said you wouldn't mind. You have a government job. They don't check these things."

"Falsifying employment records on a government grant is fraud," I said. "Submitting fraudulent information while applying for naturalization is grounds for immediate denial and possible deportation."

Tears spilled over her lower lashes. "Please. I didn't know. Danny did all the paperwork."

"Danny isn't the one sitting in the applicant chair," I reminded her.

I dragged my mouse over to the attachments section of the subsidy file. There was one final document uploaded to support her hardship claim. The file name read Character_Reference.pdf.

"Let's see who else helped you lie," I muttered, double-clicking the icon.

The scanned document loaded onto my screen.

It was a handwritten letter on lined notebook paper. The handwriting was messy, the letters slanted heavily to the right. I knew that script intimately. I had spent hours sitting at the kitchen table, forcing the writer to practice his cursive.

I read the first few lines.

To whom it may concern, Sara Cole has been a second mother to me. She struggles every day to build her business from nothing, without any support from people who should be helping her.

My chest went hollow.

I scrolled down to the bottom of the page. The signature scrawled across the final line belonged to Caleb Quill.

Next to his name was a date, matching the exact afternoon he told me to stop making a scene in our family group chat.

But the moment his ex-girlfriend, Dalia, returned, the illusion shattered. Kason demanded I return the jade pendant—the one he had hand-carved for my sixteenth birthday—just so he could hang it around Dalia's neck. To him, I was suddenly nothing more than a placeholder who had kept his bed warm. The cruelty didn't stop there. He stood by and watched as Dalia shredded my clothes with scissors, laughing at my tears. When I collapsed on the floor in agony from acute appendicitis, Kason didn't call an ambulance. Instead, he dragged me to a shady clinic, accusing me of faking a pregnancy to trap him. He ordered the doctor to "terminate it" while I was dying of sepsis on the table. He called me trash. He called me property. He stripped away every ounce of dignity I had left, all to please a woman who was lying to his face. I realized then that the hero who saved me when I was ten was dead. I was done begging for scraps of affection from a monster. Trembling, I walked to the phone and dialed the number of the one man Kason feared most—his sworn enemy, Hadley Payne. "Tell him yes," I whispered into the receiver. "I accept the arrangement. I will marry him." Kason thought he could break me. Instead, he was about to watch his "property" become the Queen of the rival family.
