Chapter 3

"Delete that," I demanded.

Theo lowered his phone, but his thumb never went near the trash icon. Instead, he angled the screen toward me. The photograph showed Grant and me in the restaurant corridor, three careful steps apart. The angle erased the distance. It made the space between us look charged, intimate, guilty.

"It is a conversation," Grant said.

He did not lunge for the phone or raise his voice. That restraint irritated Theo more than anger would have.

"A picture tells the story people are prepared to believe," Theo replied. "This one says my ex-wife is sabotaging her son's wedding by seducing the bride's father."

"That is not a story," I said. "It is blackmail with flattering lighting."

Theo smiled. "Call it insurance. If you remember the agreement you just made, the picture stays private."

I pulled my phone from my coat pocket, opened the voice-memo app, and pressed Record. The red timer began climbing.

"Say that again," I told him, holding the microphone between us. "Explain why you are collecting photographs of your ex-wife to control an eighteen-year-old's wedding."

His smile disappeared.

"Put that away."

"You were proud of the plan ten seconds ago. Why are you suddenly shy?"

Theo swatted at my wrist. He missed, but the motion sent my phone bumping against the wallpaper.

Grant shifted one step closer—not to me, but into Theo's line of sight. "Do not touch her."

Theo laughed without humor. "There it is. The hotel knight protecting the reckless woman from consequences."

"I am protecting a person from being grabbed," Grant said. "The rest is her decision."

That answer steadied me. He did not speak over me or turn the confrontation into a contest between men. He simply made clear that Theo would not put his hands on me.

I raised the phone again. "Why did you sign the lake venue contract without telling me?"

"Because Ethan asked for help."

"Why are you the financial guarantor instead of the couple?"

"Because they are students."

"Why did you tell me to leave the wedding group chat before Ethan asked me to?"

Theo's mouth tightened. "Because you create instability. You always have."

There it was—the same word from the custody memorandum, the same label he had used every time I took a job he disliked, dated someone he had not approved, or refused to rearrange my life around his calendar.

"Define instability," I said.

"You had a child at fifteen. You have spent the last eighteen years proving you make choices before you think."

The corridor seemed to narrow around us. I could hear dishes clattering behind the dining-room door and the faint piano from the bar. Ordinary sounds, continuing while Theo dragged my oldest shame into the light.

"I raised that child," I said. "I finished school. I built a business. I paid every bill you predicted would bury me."

"And the second Ethan announces his wedding, you find another complication."

"Grant is not a complication. He is a man I met before I knew who he was."

"A man whose hand was on your neck."

Grant's expression changed for the first time. His calm sharpened. "How do you know where my hand was?"

Theo glanced at the phone in his palm.

The movement was small, but I caught it.

"You have more pictures," I said.

"I have enough."

"From the hotel?"

He did not answer.

Cold traveled through me. The corridor photograph could have been opportunistic; he had taken it himself moments ago. But the hotel hallway had been three nights earlier, before Theo supposedly knew Grant existed.

"Were you following me?" I asked.

"Do not flatter yourself."

"That is not a denial."

Grant held out his hand. "Show us the metadata."

Theo tucked the phone against his chest. "You do not get to issue orders in my family."

"Your family?" I said. "Ethan is not a company you own, and I am not a clause you can enforce."

Theo stepped closer until the tips of his shoes nearly touched mine. "You signed a co-parenting agreement because even a judge knew you needed boundaries."

"That agreement was written when Ethan was ten. He is eighteen now."

"Then act like the mother of an adult and stop humiliating him."

I glanced at the red timer on my screen. Every word was being saved. Theo followed my gaze and realized it too.

He lowered his voice. "Delete the recording, and I delete the picture."

"No."

"Rebecca."

"Send the photograph if you want. I will send the audio with it."

For one brief second, uncertainty flickered across his face. Theo's power had always depended on private pressure—phone calls no one heard, agreements described differently after the fact, money offered with conditions spoken but never written. A recording turned control into evidence.

Grant looked toward the dining-room door. "The children should not be brought into this corridor."

"You are already bringing them into it," Theo snapped. "Every time you look at her, you are telling Lily she matters less than a woman you met in a bar."

"That is not what looking means."

"It is what they will believe."

"Only if you teach them to believe it," I said.

The door opened behind Theo.

Lily appeared first, her expression anxious. "Why is everyone gone?"

Ethan followed her into the hallway. He took in Theo's phone, Grant's rigid posture, and the recording screen in my hand.

"Dad," he said, "what did you do?"

Theo changed instantly. His shoulders softened; his voice became patient. "I am trying to keep this from becoming uglier than it already is. Your mother is recording a private family conversation."

"Because he threatened me with a photograph," I said.

Ethan looked at Theo. "Is that true?"

"I documented what I saw."

"You said you would save it for him," Grant said. "Those were your words."

Lily wrapped her arms around herself. "Can we please go back inside? People are staring."

Two servers had paused near the service station at the end of the corridor. One immediately looked away when I met his eyes.

Theo held out his phone to Ethan. "See for yourself. Ask whether this looks innocent."

Ethan stared at the photograph. His face tightened—not because it proved anything, but because he was eighteen and terrified that other people would laugh at the strange shape his family was taking.

I extended my phone. "Listen to the recording too. Do not accept evidence from only one person."

Theo reached for my wrist again.

Ethan moved faster. He stepped between us and snatched the phone from my hand.

"Stop it," he snapped.
