My Husband Gave His First Love's Daughter Everything, Then Found Out Who I Really Was Chapter 1
I used to tell our seven-year-old daughter that Daddy missed her school plays because he was busy building our future.
Then the stage collapsed.
Lily was bleeding behind the curtain. My husband ran straight past her.
He picked up his first love’s daughter instead.
“Daddy?” Lily whispered.
He never even turned around.
At the hospital, she kept watching the door until visiting hours ended. Three days later, when he missed another promise because that woman’s daughter “needed him more,” Lily stopped crying.
She erased him from her Family Tree assignment.
Then she looked at me and said, “Mommy, we don’t need Daddy anymore.”
So I stopped begging too.
I took my daughter, signed the separation papers, and returned to the billionaire family I had hidden for eight years.
At the biggest charity gala in the city, my husband finally saw us again.
This time, Lily was in another man’s arms.
And when her father reached for her?
She turned her face away.

EVELYN'S POV
"Mommy, do you see him yet?"
It was a wet Friday in early March, and Lily had smoothed the stiff edges of her gold foil star costume at least ten times. She stood on her tiptoes, peering through the slit in the backstage curtain at the crowded auditorium.
"He promised he'd take the middle seat in the front row," she whispered, her brown eyes shining with absolute trust. "He said he wouldn't miss my first solo."
I knelt in front of our seven-year-old daughter, carefully adjusting the silver headband holding back her dark curls. My chest tightened with a familiar, dull ache. "He's on his way, sweetheart. Traffic on the bridge is always terrible around five."
I had texted Daniel three times since four o'clock. None of the messages had been marked as read.
The heavy auditorium door at the back swung open. Daniel rushed down the aisle, his dark coat unbuttoned. But he wasn't alone.
Vanessa walked closely beside him, holding the hand of her six-year-old daughter, Mia. Vanessa, Daniel's first love, wore a soft cream cashmere sweater. He had started seeing her regularly again three years earlier, always insisting she needed a friend.
Lily gasped, her face lighting up. "Daddy's here!"
Daniel guided Vanessa and Mia toward the front row, squeezing them into the seats directly beside mine before he hurried through the backstage access door. When he reached us, he gave Lily a quick pat on the head, but his attention kept drifting back toward the auditorium.
"You made it," I said, keeping my voice low so Lily wouldn't catch the edge in it. "I didn't know Vanessa and Mia were coming."
"Vanessa called," Daniel said quietly, not meeting my eyes. "Mia has been having panic attacks all week. Vanessa didn't want to spend the evening alone with her, so I told them they could come with me."
"This was Lily's special night, Daniel. You promised her you'd be here just for her."
"She's fine, Evelyn. Look at her," he replied, gesturing dismissively. "Lily is strong. Mia is going through a very fragile time right now. Don't make an issue out of nothing."
Lily looked down at her shiny red shoes, the bright spark in her eyes dimming. Still, she reached into the small pocket of her star skirt, her fingers touching a folded piece of construction paper.
"It's okay, Mommy," Lily murmured, offering a small, brave smile. "Daddy's here to watch me. That's all that matters."
She checked that the folded paper was still in her pocket, then peeked through the curtain again. I wanted him to deserve that smile.
The backstage coordinator clapped her hands. "Places, everyone! Kindergarten and first grade, line up stage left!"
I kissed Lily's forehead. "Sing your heart out, baby."
I returned to my seat in the front row. Vanessa gave me an apologetic look, her voice soft and timid. "I'm so sorry to intrude, Evelyn. Daniel insisted. He was worried Mia would spiral if she stayed home."
"This is Lily's night," I said, turning toward the stage.
Before the curtain rose, Mia began to cry. An usher led her and Vanessa through the side access door toward a quiet room behind the stage. Vanessa paused in the doorway to speak to him while Mia waited just inside the wing.
The music started. The curtain parted to reveal thirty children dressed as twinkling stars and planets. Lily stood front and center, her small hands raised in perfect choreography, her clear voice carrying through the speakers. She beamed directly at Daniel, then moved toward the left wing for her next cue.
Then, a metallic screech tore through the music.
Above the left wing of the stage, an overhead lighting rig groaned. A heavy support cable snapped with the sound of a gunshot.
"Look out!" someone screamed from the sound booth.
Panic exploded. The heavy metal truss swung down like a pendulum, smashing into the painted wooden backdrop and crashing onto the stage floor. Children screamed, scattering in every direction as stage props splintered.
Lily and Mia were both caught in the chaos near the left wing.
A falling wooden flat knocked both girls off their feet. Lily went down hard on the wooden floorboards. A jagged metal corner tore through her white tights and cut deep into her right calf. Mia fell onto a stack of soft stage cushions a few feet away, clutching her ankle and wailing loudly.
"Lily!" I shrieked, vaulting over the front partition.
Daniel was already ahead of me. He leaped onto the stage, tearing through the falling dust and screaming children.
He reached the wing first.
His gaze dropped to Lily's leg, then lifted to her face. Blood was spreading beneath her on the boards. She reached toward him through her tears.
"Daniel! Help Mia! Please!" Vanessa screamed from the side doorway. "She can't stand!"
Daniel froze for a fraction of a second. His gaze broke away from our bleeding daughter.
Without a word, he turned his back on Lily and lunged toward Mia.
"Daddy..." Lily whimpered. She reached out one trembling, blood-streaked hand toward the hem of his coat.
Daniel didn't stop. He scooped Mia into his arms, cradling the girl against his chest while checking her ankle with frantic urgency.
"I've got you, Mia," Daniel said breathlessly. "You're safe. I'm right here."
He turned and began running toward the side emergency exit.
"Daniel!" I screamed, dropping to my knees beside Lily. A heavy wooden board was pinning the hem of her star skirt against the floor. I shoved the splintered wood away with all my strength, ignoring the gouges in my palms, and pulled Lily into my arms.
Blood soaked through Lily's white tights, staining my blouse.
Daniel paused by the exit doors, looking back over his shoulder.
"She's bleeding, Daniel! Your daughter is bleeding!" I yelled, my voice cracking with fury and horror.
Daniel frowned, his expression tight with impatient defense. "You've got Lily. Mia needs me more. She doesn't have a father here."
With that, he pushed through the double doors and disappeared into the night with Vanessa and her child.
Lily's fingers tightened around mine at his words.
Her free hand, the one she had reached toward him, fell back to her side. Her fingers curled weakly against her pocket, crushing the folded construction paper hidden inside. She didn't make a sound. She didn't even cry.
"Mommy's here, baby," I sobbed, pressing my cardigan against the deep gash on her leg to slow the bleeding. "I've got you. Look at me, Lily. Keep looking at Mommy."
A teacher knelt beside us and told me an ambulance was on its way. I kept pressure on Lily's leg until the paramedics reached us, secured a dressing, and lifted her onto a stretcher.

Inside the back of the vehicle, the siren wailed relentlessly against the rain. The paramedic worked quickly, using medical shears to cut away the remaining fabric of Lily's ruined tights.
Lily didn't flinch. She just stared quietly out the small rear window at the flashing red lights reflecting on the wet pavement.
"Mommy?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the engine.
"I'm right here, sweetie." I gripped her small, cold hand.
"Is Daddy going to meet us at the hospital?"
A painful lump formed in my throat, choking off the air. Every instinct in me wanted to protect her, to weave the usual lies I had told for the past three years, that her father loved her most, that he was just busy, that he would be there soon.
The words died on my tongue. I couldn't say them anymore.
Lily slowly reached into the torn pocket of her gold skirt. She pulled out the crumpled piece of paper, smoothing the bent corners with her thumb.
On the front, drawn in bright yellow crayon, was a smiling star with the words Best Daddy in the World.
Lily looked up at me, her eyes dull and empty in a way no seven-year-old's eyes should ever be.
"Mommy," she whispered softly. "Do I still give this to Daddy?"
"You don't have to decide tonight," I told her.
I folded the card along its old crease and tucked it back into her pocket. For the first time, I offered no excuse for her father.
