My Husband Slept With His Mistress Outside My Hospital Room Chapter 1

The wedding was over, and the lights of Seattle glittered outside the penthouse windows.

Two glasses of champagne sat on the marble counter, bubbles rising to the top. I had just kicked off my heels. My feet ached, but my heart was full. I had married Mathias Carr. He was brilliant, wealthy, and handsome, and he had chosen me.

Then I saw the box on the king-sized bed.

It was small, wrapped in silver foil with a satin ribbon. I thought it was another wedding gift. I smiled, pulled the ribbon loose, and lifted the lid.

Inside was a black lace teddy and a stack of glossy photographs.

My breath caught in my throat. In the pictures, Mathias was tangled in silk sheets with his executive assistant, Amber Chen. Her head was thrown back. His hands were tight on her waist. On top of the photos lay a handwritten note on heavy cream paper: *He likes this one best.*

The room seemed to tilt. My hands shook so hard the photos fluttered to the carpet.

Mathias walked out of the master bathroom, drying his fingers on a white towel. He wore a dark silk robe, looking clean and relaxed.

"What is this?" My voice broke. I pointed down at the bed.

Mathias walked over, picked up one of the pictures, and studied it. His face didn't change at all. He didn't blink. He just laid it back down on the mattress.

"Amber sent it," he said simply.

"You’re... you’re sleeping with her?" I choked out. "On our wedding night?"

"Nyla, calm down," he said, using the same smooth, quiet tone he used in boardrooms. "Amber is an assistant. It’s purely physical. Men at my level don't operate under the rules of ordinary people. We separate physical desire from emotional commitment. You are my wife. She isn't."

Tears burned my eyes. "Are you insane? You cheated on me!"

He sighed, rolling his eyes as he adjusted his robe. "Stop the melodrama, darling. It doesn't suit you. If we're going to make this work, you need to grow up."

Two weeks later, the cruelty stopped pretending to be civilized.

Mathias called me down to the garage on a rainy Tuesday. He handed me a small paper pharmacy bag. Inside were two boxes of condoms and a package of morning-after pills.

"Take this to the hotel downtown," he said. "Room 412. Amber forgot hers."

My stomach turned to ice. "No. I won't do that."

Mathias stepped close. He gripped my chin, his fingers digging into my jaw until it hurt. "You will. You need to learn your place, Nyla. You ride with me, or you walk."

He drove in absolute silence through the Seattle rain. When we pulled up to the curb outside the luxury hotel, he took the bag from my lap.

"Wait here," he said.

I sat in the passenger seat of his car. Five minutes passed. Ten. Twenty. The rain drummed hard against the tinted glass. My chest felt hollowed out, cold and sick. Forty minutes later, the door clicked open.

Mathias slid back behind the wheel. The sweet smell of Amber's gardenia perfume rushed into the car. On his crisp white collar, right beneath his jaw, was a smear of plum lipstick.

He buckled his seatbelt, turned on the radio, and shifted into drive.

"Thai or Italian for dinner?" he asked.

He didn't look at me. He acted like nothing had happened.

By November, we had moved into his lakeside mansion outside the city. It was huge, cold, and made of glass and grey stone.

I stood across from him in the kitchen while he poured his morning espresso.

"I want a divorce, Mathias," I said. My voice was steady. I had rehearsed the words all night. "I'm seeing a lawyer today."

Mathias blew across the dark foam of his cup. He didn't shout. He didn't throw anything. He just looked at me over the rim and took a slow sip.

"Go get some rest, Nyla," he said softly. "You're tired."

That night, two technicians in dark uniforms arrived at the house. I heard drills and soft metallic clicks in the hallway until past midnight.

The next morning, the master bedroom was freezing. Mathias was already gone.

I threw on my coat, grabbed my purse, and walked to the heavy front door. I pulled the brass handle. It didn't budge.

Beside the frame, a black digital scanner glowed with a tiny red light.

*Access Denied. Biometric Scan Required.*

I pressed my thumb against the glass screen. A sharp buzzer sounded. Red again.

I ran through the house. The terrace doors were locked. The kitchen door leading to the garden was locked. The garage doors were shut tight to the concrete floor.

I pulled out my phone to dial out. But there were no bars. Just a grey banner: *Network restricted by administrator.*

I was locked in. Mathias had turned my home into a cage.

Days passed in silence. I wandered the empty rooms like a ghost.

On the fourth afternoon, I sat on the floor of the spare bedroom surrounded by unpacked boxes from my old life. At the bottom of one box, tucked inside a wool sweater, I found a worn leather journal.

I picked up a pen from the floor.

My knuckles were white. My hand shook so hard I could barely hold the plastic. But I needed to write. I needed evidence for the day I escaped. More than that, I needed to remind myself that I was still alive. That I was still real.

I pressed the tip into the empty page:

*November 18. Mathias locked the exterior doors with his thumbprint. He took away my phone. I am still here.*
