Chapter 1

In the fifth month of my pregnancy, my husband brought back his first love, who was eight months pregnant and causing a stir about getting a divorce.

I politely told him that pregnant women would influence each other, which wasn’t good for the child.

Alex, however, smashed a water glass and said in disgust, "Sarah is depressed because of the divorce, and the only one she can rely on is me! Do you want her to die?"

I felt nauseous and vomited, unable to sleep through the night, and my health worsened with each passing day.

To make her happy, he filled the house with lilies.

But he had forgotten that I was allergic to lilies and locked me in the room, saying, "Let’s see if you can get an allergic reaction if you can’t smell the lilies."

I bled continuously, desperately calling him for help for both myself and the child, but he simply said that I was still early in the pregnancy and there wouldn’t be any problems.

When the fetal movements stopped, I had completely given up.

It was at that moment that he frantically pushed open the door.

During the fifth month of my pregnancy, during my prenatal check-up, my husband Alex received a phone call, then left me behind to go meet his first love, who was eight months pregnant and in the midst of a divorce.

The doctor stared at him in shock as he left and looked cautiously at me.

I gave a wry smile and said, “It’s fine, I can manage by myself…”

No matter what Alex was doing, as long as he got a call from that person, he would always be called away.

Anyway, it wasn’t the first time.

When I got home, Sarah Dole was sitting on the soft cushion that Alex had specially chosen for me.

My husband, Alex, was feeding her an apple.

When he saw me come back, he hurriedly put down the plate, as though it had burned his hands.

Then he walked toward me, gently supporting my bulged waist and asking, “Why are you back so soon? Didn’t the doctor say they needed to check on you a bit longer?”

I looked at him and said, “I finished the observation. I called you, but you didn’t answer a single call.”

He froze for a moment, then immediately took out his phone. Seeing dozens of missed calls and messages. He had an awkward look on his face as he said, “Sarah said that the phone was noisy, so I put it on silent.”

I lowered my eyes and nodded in response.

It had been a tiring trip back from the city center. I was exhausted and didn’t want to deal with anything. I just wanted to rest.

But to my surprise, Sarah came over, grabbed my hand, and asked hypocritically, “Nina, you’re not mad, are you?”

I frowned. “Why would I be mad? Do you think you’ve done something to wrong me?”

Before Sarah could respond, Alex snapped, “Shut up! Do you even know what you're saying?!”

Sarah, on the other hand, looked all innocent and understanding. “It’s okay, maybe Nina’s just got a bad temper in the middle of her pregnancy. I’m further along, so I can be more tolerant. If Nina doesn’t like me, and can’t accept me…”

She looked like she was on the verge of tears.

Seeing his former lover upset, Alex comforted her. “With me, you’ll never have to suffer.”

After that, he placed himself between us as if to shield her.

Then, in a stiff tone, he said, “I don’t want to keep this from you. Sarah is going through a divorce, and as you know, I think she’ll stay with us for a while.”

I froze.

I had considered all sorts of possibilities, even imagining Alex might end up fighting with her husband over her.

But I never thought he would go so far as to let Sarah live in our home.

A tremor passed through me, and then I recalled the doctor’s advice. I forced myself to speak in the calmest, most composed tone I could muster. “Pregnant women living together can influence each other. Please find her another place to stay.”

But as soon as the words left my mouth, Sarah suddenly burst into tears, apologizing, “I’m sorry. I know I’ve affected both of you. I’ll leave right now!”

She turned and ran out the door.

It happened so suddenly that Alex didn't have time to stop her.

Before chasing after her, he gritted his teeth and scolded me harshly, “If you can’t stand it, move out yourself! It’s so chaotic out there, if anything happens to Sarah, I won’t forgive you!”

The door slammed shut with a loud bang, shaking the walls.

My stomach began to cramp sharply. I rarely had morning sickness, but at that moment, I suddenly bent down and began throwing up.
