Chapter 2

I called the hospital on a Wednesday morning. The sun was coming through the kitchen window in slices, cutting the counter into bright sections and dark. I stood in one of the dark sections and dialed the number I'd found on the last bill my mother had received.

The intake coordinator had a kind voice. That made it worse somehow.

"I'm calling about Nyla Turner," I said. "She was a patient there last fall. I need her final medical records."

There was typing. A pause. "Are you next of kin?"

"I'm her daughter."

More typing. Then the coordinator said, "I can send those over. Give me one moment to pull the file."

I waited. The refrigerator hummed. Somewhere down the hall, Flynn's alarm went off and stopped. He didn't get up.

"Okay," the coordinator said. "I'm showing Ms. Turner was scheduled for surgery on October twelfth, but she declined the procedure after her insurance claim was denied. No private funding was secured. She passed away November seventh."

November seventh. A Tuesday.

I thanked her. I hung up. I opened my laptop and pulled up the bank statement I'd saved in the encrypted folder. Flynn's commission deposit: October eighteenth. Five point two million dollars. Three weeks before my mother jumped.

I did the arithmetic twice. Then I sat very still for twenty minutes and felt something inside me go quiet and cold and final.

When Flynn came into the kitchen that evening, I was already sitting at the table. The bank statements were laid out in a row, printed and highlighted. Commission record. Wire transfers. Apartment lease with Ariah's name at the top.

He stopped in the doorway, coffee mug in hand, and looked at the papers like they were something that had appeared by accident.

"What's this?" he asked.

I didn't answer. I just watched him.

He came closer. His eyes moved over the documents, and I saw the exact moment he understood. His jaw tightened. He set the mug down too hard.

"Where did you get those?" His voice was sharp now, defensive.

"Does it matter?"

"Olive, you can't just—" He gestured at the papers, his hand cutting the air. "You can't go through my accounts like some kind of detective. That's private."

"You told me we had no money," I said. My voice came out flat. Clinical. I was surprised by how steady it sounded. "You told me we were stretched thin. I begged you, Flynn. I got on my knees and begged you to help me pay for my mother's surgery."

"That's not—" He stopped. Started again. "You're reading it wrong. You always do this. You see something and you blow it out of proportion."

I pointed to the date on the commission statement. "October eighteenth. Five point two million dollars."

Then I pointed to the wire transfer. "October twenty-third. Fifty thousand to an account under Ariah Castro's name."

Then the lease. "November first. Luxury apartment, Upper East Side. Signed by you as guarantor."

I looked up at him. "My mother died November seventh."

Flynn's face went red. Not embarrassed red. Angry red. "You have no idea what it takes to run a business, Olive. No idea. That money was earmarked. It wasn't liquid. I couldn't just pull it out."

"You pulled it out for her."

"That's different!"

"How?"

He slammed his hand on the table. The mug jumped. Coffee sloshed over the rim. "Because I needed her happy! Because clients were watching! Because you don't understand how any of this works!"

I stood up slowly. My chair scraped the floor. "My mother is dead because you lied."

Something in Flynn's face twisted. The mask I'd spent twenty years pretending I didn't see — it finally came all the way off. He stepped toward me, and I saw his hand coming before I felt it.

The slap cracked across my cheekbone, sharp and hot. My head snapped to the side. For a second, there was just the ringing in my ear and the taste of copper on my tongue.

I turned back to look at him. He was breathing hard, staring at his own hand like it belonged to someone else.

I didn't cry. I didn't speak. I picked up the documents one by one, folded them carefully, and walked out of the kitchen. Down the hall. Into the bedroom. I locked the door behind me and stood there, my hand pressed to my face, feeling the heat bloom under my palm.

Behind me, in the kitchen, Flynn stood alone. I could hear his breathing through the walls. Ragged. Uneven.

I looked at myself in the mirror. The bruise was already forming, purple spreading along my cheekbone like spilled ink.

I looked at it for a long time. Then I opened my laptop and booked a flight to London.
