Chapter 3

I woke up before the alarm. The bedroom was still dark, the city outside just beginning to stir. Flynn was asleep on his back, one arm flung across the pillow where I used to sleep. His face looked younger in the dim light. Softer. I looked at him for a long time and felt nothing.

I got up. I moved through the apartment like I was cataloging someone else's life. The suitcase I pulled from the closet was small, navy blue, the one I'd bought for a work trip three years ago that Flynn had needed me to cancel. I packed the way you pack when you're not coming back — underwear, two blouses, a pair of jeans, my laptop, the folder with the documents, my mother's photograph. Everything else could stay. It was just furniture.

In the kitchen, my wedding ring was still on the counter where I'd left it the night before. I picked it up. It was lighter than I remembered. I set it down beside the coffee maker, right where Flynn would see it when he stumbled in looking for caffeine and found me gone instead.

I did not leave a note. There was nothing left to say that the ring didn't say better.

The hallway was quiet. The elevator descended without a sound. The doorman wished me a good morning and I nodded and stepped into the cool air. I raised my hand and a cab pulled over. I gave the driver the name of a midtown hotel I'd booked online an hour earlier, under my maiden name. Turner. Olive Turner. It felt strange in my mouth, like a language I used to speak.

The hotel room was small and clean and anonymous. I sat on the edge of the bed and looked at my phone. No calls. Not yet. I turned it off and plugged it into the charger and lay down fully clothed and stared at the ceiling until the light changed.

Flynn found me by three in the afternoon.

I heard him before I saw him — his voice in the hallway, loud and wrong, demanding the front desk tell him my room number. Then the hammering on the door, hard enough to rattle the frame.

"Olive!" His fist hit the wood again. "Open the door!"

I stood up slowly. I walked to the door and stopped with my hand on the chain lock. I could see his shadow moving under the gap at the bottom.

"Olive, please. Just talk to me."

I slid the chain into place and opened the door three inches. Flynn's face filled the gap. His eyes were red. His hair was a mess. He looked like a man who had been driving around the city for hours convincing himself this was fixable.

"Let me in," he said.

I shook my head.

"Olive, come on. Don't do this. We can talk about it. We can—"

"The divorce is finalized," I said. My voice was quiet. Steady. "You signed the papers at the hospital. Your lawyer will receive formal notice this week."

His mouth opened. Closed. Opened again. "What?"

"You signed them. You thought they were liability forms."

I watched his face change. Confusion first. Then comprehension. Then something I'd never seen before — fear, maybe, or the edge of it.

"That's not legal," he said. "You tricked me. That doesn't count."

"It counts."

"Olive—" His hand came up, pressing flat against the door. "You can't just leave. You don't get to just leave."

"I already did."

His breathing was loud in the narrow space between us. "I'm sorry. Okay? I'm sorry. I shouldn't have hit you. I shouldn't have lied. I'll fix it. I'll fix all of it. Just come home."

I looked at him through the gap. At the man I'd known for twenty years. The boy I'd helped with his homework. The husband I'd funded and supported and loved until there was nothing left of me that wasn't his.

"No," I said.

I closed the door. The lock clicked. On the other side, Flynn stood very still. I could hear him breathing. I counted the seconds. Thirty. Sixty. One hundred. Two hundred forty.

Then his footsteps, slow and uneven, moving down the hall.

I sat on the bed and opened my laptop. The flight to London was booked for Sunday. Three days. I pulled up my work email and began drafting the transfer request I should have written years ago.

My phone buzzed. I turned it over. A notification from a flower delivery app. $200 arrangement sent. Then a text from Flynn: *I'm sorry. Come home.*

I deleted the text. I blocked the number. I went back to the email and kept typing.

Outside, the city moved. Traffic hummed. Sirens wailed somewhere far off. The sun dropped lower and the light through the window went gold, then pink, then gray.

I finished the email. I hit send. Then I lay back on the bed and closed my eyes and felt, for the first time in twenty years, like I could breathe all the way down.
