Chapter 4

The spending started three days after Rohan carried Nadia out of my foyer.

Lexi called me at noon. Her voice was tight.

"You need to see this," she said.

She texted me a screenshot. Instagram. Nadia's account. A photograph of a vineyard at sunset. Rolling hills. Golden light. The caption read: *Our new beginning. Napa, you're ours now. 🍷💕*

I zoomed in. Recognized the property. I'd toured it two years ago with Rohan. Four point two million. He'd said it was too much. Too impractical.

Apparently not anymore.

I set down my phone. Picked up my coffee. It was cold.

"Adalynn?" Lexi's voice came through the speaker. "You still there?"

"I'm here."

"What do you want me to do?"

"Nothing," I said. "Let her post."

Silence on the other end. Then: "You're sure?"

"I'm sure."

I hung up. Opened a new browser window. Started a list.

---

The posts came daily after that.

A Bugatti Chiron in matte black. Parked outside their Tribeca building. Nadia in the driver's seat wearing sunglasses that cost more than most people's rent. Caption: *When he says 'pick your color' and means it. đź–¤*

A vintage Cartier bracelet. Art Deco. Emeralds and diamonds. Laid across white silk. Caption: *Some things are worth the wait. Thank you, baby. đź’š*

A suite at the Aman Tokyo. Floor-to-ceiling windows. City lights stretching to infinity. Nadia in a white robe with her hand on her still-flat stomach. Caption: *Babymoon with my forever. Upgraded from assistant to Mrs. Edwards. đź’•*

That last one she tagged me in.

My phone lit up with notifications. Former friends. Columbia alumni. People I hadn't spoken to in years suddenly very interested in my reaction.

I didn't respond. Didn't block her. Didn't make my account private.

I saved every screenshot.

---

The comments were worse than the posts.

Old classmates leaving heart emojis. Women I'd sat next to at charity luncheons writing *So happy for you!* and *You deserve this.*

Someone from Rohan's board commented: *Power couple energy.*

A girl from my boarding school days—someone I'd lent notes to, someone I'd thought was a friend—wrote: *Sometimes the right person was there all along.*

Lexi showed up at my apartment that night with Thai food and murder in her eyes.

"I'm going to burn down the internet," she announced. "Starting with that boarding school bitch."

I was sitting on the floor. Laptop open. Spreadsheets covering the coffee table.

"Sit," I said.

She sat. Looked at the papers. Her expression changed.

"What is this?"

"Every purchase," I said. "Every transaction. Every wire transfer. Dated. Sourced. Traced."

I turned the laptop toward her. Rows of numbers. Account details. Signatures.

"The vineyard," I continued, "was purchased with a line of credit from Hicks Capital. The Bugatti was leased through an entity collateralized by the trust. The Cartier pieces went on a card backed by trust guarantees. The Aman suite was billed to Edwards Holdings—which only exists because Grandfather's trust underwrites the corporate structure."

Lexi stared at the screen. Then at me.

"She's spending your money," she said slowly.

"She's spending money that was never Rohan's to give."

Lexi leaned back. A smile spread across her face. Slow. Dangerous.

"You're building a case," she said.

"I'm building an execution."

She picked up her wine glass. Raised it slightly.

"To forensic accounting," she said.

I didn't smile. But I touched my glass to hers.

---

The attorneys came to the estate on a Friday.

Four of them. Sullivan & Cromwell. The kind of lawyers who bill by the quarter hour and win by making surrender look inevitable.

We sat in the library. I laid out the trust documents. The spending records. The screenshots. Everything.

The lead attorney—a woman named Catherine Marsh with silver hair and a gaze like a scalpel—read through the materials without speaking. Twenty minutes. Complete silence except for the turn of pages.

Finally she looked up.

"This is airtight," she said.

"I know."

"The trust revocation will destroy him. Completely. He won't have standing to contest. No assets to liquidate. No credit to leverage."

"I know."

Catherine leaned forward. Folded her hands on the table.

"Mrs. Edwards," she said carefully, "once we file these documents, there's no walking it back. The revocation is permanent. The asset freeze is immediate. The divorce settlement terms are non-negotiable."

She paused. Watching me.

"Are you certain?"

I thought about the tattoo on my chest. The words I'd carry forever. The girl I'd saved who branded me like livestock. The man I'd built who called me a monster.

I thought about Rohan carrying Nadia out of my foyer. Choosing her. Choosing their future.

Leaving me standing alone.

"I'm certain," I said.

Catherine nodded. Pulled out a leather folio. Opened it to a signature page.

"Then we'll need your authorization," she said. "And a date."

I picked up the pen. Grandfather's fountain pen. The one he'd used to sign my authorization.

I signed my name. Dated it.

Then I wrote four words at the bottom of the page:

*The Plaza. March fifteenth.*

Catherine read it. Her eyebrows rose slightly.

"The charity gala," she said.

"Yes."

"He's planning to debut Ms. Cruz that night. Formal introduction to Manhattan society."

"I know."

Catherine's mouth curved. Just barely. The smile of a woman who recognized a perfect kill shot when she saw one.

"We'll be ready," she said.

The attorneys left. I stayed in the library. Watched the sun set through the tall windows.

My phone buzzed. Another post from Nadia. Another caption. Another tag.

I didn't look.

I didn't need to.

I already knew how this ended.
