After My Husband Let His Mistress Tattoo Me, I Destroyed Him Chapter 1

I wore the white silk blouse Rohan liked. The one with the pearl buttons. He said it made me look like old Hollywood. I spent twenty minutes on my hair. I told myself this anniversary would be different.

Seven years. Most marriages don't make it this far anymore.

Rohan picked me up at six. He drove the Aston Martin—the one Grandfather's trust had quietly collateralized three years ago, though Rohan still called it his baby. He smiled at me across the center console. That smile used to make my chest feel warm. Now it just made me tired.

"You're going to love this," he said. "I planned everything myself."

The Hamptons estate sat behind iron gates and hedges tall enough to hide secrets. A private spa, Rohan explained. Exclusive. He'd flown in a guest artist from Berlin. "Couples' tattooing experience," he said, like he was unveiling a product launch. "Something permanent. Something that shows we're committed."

I should have said no. I should have asked more questions. But I wanted so badly to believe he was trying.

The room was all candlelight and white linen. Soft music. The kind of place designed to make you feel safe. A woman in a black mask greeted us. Her voice was young. Familiar in a way I couldn't place.

"Mrs. Edwards," she said, gesturing to the table. "Please, lie down."

Rohan kissed my forehead. "I'll be right outside. This is your surprise."

I unbuttoned my blouse. Folded it carefully on the chair. The air was cool against my skin. The artist's gloved hands were steady as she cleaned the area over my heart. Professional. I closed my eyes and thought about the boy who walked forty blocks in a snowstorm to bring me coffee. The boy who left notes in my textbooks. I wanted that boy back so badly it hurt.

The needle buzzed. I focused on breathing. She worked for maybe twenty minutes. When she finally stepped back, she said, "All done. You can look now."

I stood. Walked to the mirror.

The words were in script. Black ink. Right across my chest where a necklace would sit. I read them twice because my brain couldn't process what my eyes were seeing.

They were degrading. Sexual. The kind of thing you'd write on a bathroom stall about someone you hated.

My hands started shaking.

The artist pulled off her mask. Nadia Cruz smiled at me. The girl I pulled out of a trailer in West Virginia. The girl I paid to educate. The girl I mentored personally for three years.

"Surprise," she said softly.

I couldn't speak. My chest was on fire. The ink was still wet.

I walked out of that room in my bra, past the candles, into the hallway. Rohan was leaning against the wall, scrolling his phone. He looked up. Saw me. Saw the words.

He didn't look surprised.

"Rohan." My voice came out flat. "What is this."

He straightened. Put his phone away. "Babe, listen—"

"What. Is. This."

Nadia appeared behind me, still holding the tattoo gun. Rohan's eyes flicked to her, then back to me. He stepped between us. Not to protect me. To protect her.

"It was supposed to be funny," he said. "She didn't mean—"

"She tattooed me, Rohan. She put this on my body."

"I know, I know." He held up both hands like I was the one being unreasonable. "She's young, okay? She looks up to you. She just—she went too far. It was a prank."

Behind him, Nadia bit her lip. She looked almost shy. Like a child caught breaking something expensive.

"She's barely twenty-four, babe," Rohan said. His voice was gentle. Patient. The voice he used with investors who didn't understand cap tables. "She didn't mean it."

I looked at him. Really looked. At the man I built. The man whose entire empire sat on my family's money. The man I loved since I was eighteen.

He was still standing between me and the girl who branded me.

Something inside me went very quiet. Very cold.

I buttoned my blouse over the wet ink. It stung. I didn't care.

"Move," I said.

Rohan blinked. "Adalynn—"

"Move."

He stepped aside.

I walked past both of them. Found my purse. My keys. I drove home in silence. The ink bled through my blouse. I didn't stop to clean it.

At midnight, I called Lexi. She answered on the second ring.

"I need you," I said.

She was at my door in forty minutes with a bottle of Burgundy and no questions.

We sat in my living room. She poured two glasses. I didn't touch mine.

"Show me," she said quietly.

I unbuttoned my blouse.

Lexi looked at the words. Her face went white. Then red. Then she set down her glass very carefully.

"I'm going to kill him," she said.

"No." I touched the bandage I'd put over the ink. Two fingers. Light pressure. "I'm not going to ask for an apology. I'm going to make it unnecessary."

Lexi leaned forward. Her hand found mine.

"Tell me what you need," she said.

I picked up my phone. Scrolled to Grandfather's number. It was two in the morning. He answered on the first ring.

"Adalynn," he said. No surprise in his voice. Like he'd been waiting.

"I need the trust revoked," I said. "All of it. Before the end of the week."

Silence. Then:

"Consider it done."

I hung up. Looked at Lexi.

"Now," I said, "we plan."
