Chapter 3

I thought about standing up. Walking out. Letting Ethan pull the funding. Letting the chips fall.

Then I thought about Arthur's oxygen machine. The steady hiss of it. The way the nurse checked the flow rate every morning. The IV drip that kept him hydrated because his kidneys couldn't process fluids the way they used to.

I thought about the cardiologist who came twice a week. The one Ethan's foundation paid for. The one who'd kept Arthur alive through three separate episodes in the last year alone.

I lowered myself slowly.

My knees touched concrete. The floor was cold. Gritty with dust and cable tape residue. I kept my spine straight. My hands flat on my thighs.

I looked up at Giana.

She stood five feet away, arms crossed, head tilted slightly. Her tears had dried. Her mouth was soft, almost kind. But her eyes were bright. Sharp. Watching me the way you watch something break.

"I'm sorry," I said.

My voice came out steady. I made sure of that.

Giana let the silence stretch. Three seconds. Four. Long enough for everyone to see me there. Long enough for the image to burn into sixty memories.

"Apology accepted," she said finally.

I stayed on my knees for two more seconds. Then I stood. Picked up my bag. Walked toward the soundstage exit.

No one moved. No one spoke.

I passed Diana Holt. She was staring at the monitor screen like it held something important. Her jaw was tight. Her hands were fists.

She didn't look at me.

I passed the lighting crew, the camera operators, the production assistants. They all found something else to look at. Shoes. Clipboards. The ceiling.

I reached the exit. Pushed through the heavy door into the bright, too-warm Los Angeles afternoon.

Behind me, I heard Ethan's voice. Calm. Easy. "All right, everyone. Let's reset for the next scene."

Like nothing had happened.

I made it halfway across the parking lot before I heard footsteps behind me. Fast. Running.

"Ms. Roberts!"

I turned.

Charleigh Mitchell stopped three feet away, breathing hard. Her crew lanyard was gone. Her face was flushed, eyes wet.

"I quit," she said.

I blinked. "What?"

"I quit." She said it louder. Angrier. "I ripped off my lanyard and told them they should all be ashamed. Then I walked out."

I stared at her. This kid. Twenty-two years old. Intern. No connections. No safety net.

"Charleigh," I said quietly. "You didn't have to—"

"Yes, I did." Her voice cracked. "You're the reason I wanted to work in this industry. Your scripts. Your work. And they just—" She stopped. Swallowed. "They made you kneel."

I didn't know what to say.

Charleigh wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. "I'm sorry I couldn't do more."

She turned and walked toward the parking structure.

I stood there, watching her go. Feeling something shift in my chest. Not hope. Not relief. Just the faint recognition that someone had seen what happened and refused to pretend it was acceptable.

My phone rang.

I pulled it out. Mount Sinai. The nurse's name flashed on the screen.

I answered.

"Ms. Roberts," the nurse said. Her voice was careful. Gentle in the way voices get when they're delivering bad news. "I'm so sorry. Your grandfather passed away about twenty minutes ago."

The parking lot was very bright.

I heard the words. I understood them. But they didn't connect to anything real.

"What?" I said.

The nurse repeated herself. Something about a cardiac event. Something about how sudden it was. How they'd done everything possible.

I stopped hearing.

I was standing in a parking lot in Los Angeles. The sun was too warm. The asphalt smelled like tar. Somewhere behind me, inside the soundstage, they were resetting lights for the next scene.

Arthur was dead.

My knees buckled.

I didn't feel myself fall. I just felt the ground come up fast. Felt my palms hit asphalt. Felt my phone skitter away across the pavement.

I knelt there — really knelt this time, not performed, not controlled — and felt something inside me crack open.

Not grief. Not yet.

Something colder.

I thought about Ethan's face when he told me to apologize. The detached, administrative expression. Like he was approving a revised budget.

I thought about Giana's smile. Soft. Satisfied.

I thought about Arthur's hand in mine two nights ago. Warm. Steady. Real.

I picked up my phone. The screen was cracked, but it still worked.

I stood slowly.

And I drove to the hospital.
