He didn't look peaceful. He looked absent.

I pulled out my phone and opened the notes app. Started typing.

*Timeline: Last visit, two nights ago. Vitals stable. Nurse reported no concerns this morning. Cardiac event at 2:47 PM.*

I stared at the words. Something didn't fit.

Arthur's heart had been weak for years. But weak wasn't the same as failing. His cardiologist had been cautiously optimistic at the last check-up. The new medication was working. His numbers were improving.

People didn't just die when their numbers were improving.

The door opened. Dr. Brendan Payne stepped in, clipboard in hand. He was younger than I expected. Mid-forties. Tired eyes. White coat crisp and spotless.

"Ms. Roberts," he said softly. "I'm so sorry for your loss."

I looked at him. "What happened?"

"A cardiac event," Dr. Payne said. "His heart simply gave out. At his age, with his condition—"

"His condition was stable," I said.

Dr. Payne shifted his weight. "These things can be unpredictable."

"Was anyone with him when it happened?"

"The nursing staff was making rounds. They responded immediately."

"Who was his nurse today?"

Dr. Payne glanced at his clipboard. "I'd have to check the schedule."

"Check it," I said.

He looked at me for a long moment. Then he nodded and left.

I turned back to Arthur. Reached out and took his hand. It was cold now. Stiff.

I thought about the last time I'd held it. Two nights ago. Warm. Steady.

I thought about Giana's smile.

Dr. Payne didn't come back.

I sat with Arthur for another hour. Then I stood, kissed his forehead, and walked out.

The funeral was small. Just me, Marcus Webb, and a handful of Arthur's old colleagues from the university where he'd taught literature for thirty years. We buried him in a cemetery in Westchester under a gray sky that threatened rain but never delivered.

I stood at the graveside holding the battered Moleskine notebook he'd given me when I was twelve. The first one. The one that started everything.

Marcus stood beside me, hands in his pockets, tie flapping in the wind.

"You okay?" he asked quietly.

I didn't answer.

The priest said words I didn't hear. People approached and touched my shoulder. I nodded at them. Thanked them. Watched them leave.

When everyone was gone, I stood there alone.

I didn't cry.

I just looked at the fresh dirt and felt something inside me go very, very still.

That night, I sat at my kitchen table with my laptop open. I pulled up the encrypted backups I'd kept of Arthur's medical records. I'd started maintaining them three years ago, after the first scare. The same archival instinct that made me keep every draft of every script.

I opened the file and started reading.

Vitals from two weeks ago: stable. Blood pressure: normal. Heart rate: consistent. Medication levels: therapeutic.

Vitals from one week ago: stable.

Vitals from three days ago: stable.

I scrolled down to the day he died.

There was a gap.

The vitals logged at 10 AM showed everything normal. The next entry was at 2:47 PM: cardiac arrest.

Five hours. No entries.

I stared at the screen.

Hospitals didn't leave five-hour gaps. Especially not in a private wing with round-the-clock monitoring.

I picked up my phone and scrolled through my contacts. Found the name I was looking for.

Dr. Elliot Raines. Forensic pathologist. I'd consulted him two years ago for a thriller script about medical malpractice. He'd walked me through how autopsies worked, what could be hidden, what couldn't.

I texted him: *Need to talk. It's urgent.*

He responded in under a minute: *Call me.*

I did.

"Siena," he said. "What's going on?"

"My grandfather died yesterday," I said. "Suddenly. They're calling it a cardiac event."

"I'm sorry," Elliot said. "That's—"

"Something's wrong," I cut in. "The timeline doesn't make sense. There's a five-hour gap in his medical records."

Silence on the other end.

"Elliot," I said quietly. "If someone wanted to kill an elderly patient in a hospital, how would they do it?"

Another pause. Then: "You're asking me how to commit murder."

"I'm asking you how to recognize one."

He exhaled slowly. "Potassium chloride. Injected into an IV line. Mimics a heart attack. Leaves almost no trace unless you're specifically looking for it."

"Would it show up in an autopsy?"

"Only if they test for it. And only if they test fast. It metabolizes quickly."

I closed my eyes. "How do I prove it?"

"You'd need the hospital's surveillance footage," Elliot said. "And you'd need someone who knows how to recover data if it's been tampered with."

I opened my laptop again. Typed a name into the search bar.

Nora Vance. Digital forensics specialist. I'd interviewed her for a script about corporate espionage. She'd told me, over coffee, that most people had no idea how much digital evidence they left behind. Or how easy it was to recover.

I found her website. Clicked the contact form.

I hit send.
