Chapter 3

Ethan's face darkened.

Lily tugged his sleeve, shooting him a pleading look.

I pretended not to notice, slipping to a corner to cancel Ethan's ticket on my phone.

His account was still logged in on my device. I paid for the whole trip.

When we planned the honeymoon, he said he was too busy with work to go. I figured that he was just too cheap to spend on an overseas trip. So, I offered to cover all costs, and he agreed without hesitation.

Looking back, my taste in men was awful. Among all the well-off guys my friends introduced, I picked a nobody.

I thought he was honest, better than flashy rich guys. Turned out, he was just another jerk.

After handling the ticket, I stepped out.

Lily dropped her act. "I couldn't get a ticket. Can you give me yours?"

I grinned, "Sure."

Her face lit up. "You're the kindest person in the world."

I brushed it off, holding up my fingers. "Five grand. Pay up, and I'll sign over my ticket to you."

Her smile froze because she didn't have that kind of money. Sure, Susan had given her pocket money, but she had blown it all on her face.

Ethan complained, "Oh, come on. Lily is your sister, and five grand is nothing to you. Just the price of a handbag. Do you have to be so petty?"

Yes, I had to. A handbag wouldn't betray me, but they would.

Once they got the ticket, they'd stab me in the back right away.

"It's chaotic here," he went on, his face flushed. "Lily is young and pretty. What if some creep snatches her?"

Funny, he never worried about me like that in my past life.

Lily teared up. "I know you're looking out for me, but Claire has always been selfish. It's normal she won't give me her ticket."

She had the nerve to say that.

Greg and Susan weren't each other's first spouses, while Lily and I weren't raised together. There were no blood ties between us, and I had no obligations to help her.

Besides, what would I do if I gave my ticket to her? They didn't even consider it.

Ethan, usually a pushover, tried to play hero in front of her. He scoffed, "You're always at the shelter saving stray dogs. I thought you were kindhearted. Guess it's all for show."

I rolled my eyes. Sometimes, strays were much better than people.

He took my silence for weakness and grabbed my wrist. "Give Lily the ticket now."

I scratched my ear, ignoring him.

My phone chimed, and I grinned, "You're such a hero. Why don't you transfer your ticket to her?"

He froze, unable to refuse under her hopeful gaze.

I nodded at his phone.

He checked it and screamed, "What the hell? Why did you cancel my ticket?"
