Chapter 3

Sienna Ashford POV:

The first thing I registered was the smell. Antiseptic. Sharp and sterile, a smell that scraped the inside of my nose and made my stomach clench.

The second was the light. A flat, unforgiving white that pressed down on my eyelids.

I forced them open.

I was in a room. A private room. The sheets were crisp, the machines beside the bed were sleek and new, and the silence was absolute. I tried to move my fingers, and a chorus of pain screamed up my arm. I looked down. My left leg was encased in a thick plaster cast, elevated on a pillow.

I was alone.

Of course I was. A bitter smile touched my cracked lips. What had I expected? That he would be here, holding my hand, his face etched with worry? That was a scene reserved for Mia.

The door swished open, and a man in a white coat entered, his face a mask of stern professionalism. He was followed by a young nurse whose eyes were wide and full of a pity that set my teeth on edge.

"Mrs. Ashford," the doctor said. His name tag read Dr. Smith, Chief of Surgery. "Good to see you're awake."

His tone was as sterile as the room.

My throat was sandpaper. "My… my injuries?" I rasped.

Dr. Smith didn't look at me. He looked at the chart in his hands. "Sienna Ashford, 32 years old. Multiple soft tissue contusions, a fractured left tibia, and a mild concussion. You were lucky."

Lucky. I wanted to laugh.

The nurse behind him shifted, her gaze darting between me and the doctor. She looked nervous. Uncomfortable.

My internal alarm bells, long dormant, began to ring. Something was wrong.

Dr. Smith set the chart down with a soft click. "We've scheduled you for a full workup. Standard procedure. With a special focus on your renal function."

I frowned, the simple movement sending a spike of pain through my head. "My kidneys? I thought my leg was broken."

For the first time, his cold blue eyes met mine. "It's a directive from Mr. Ashford."

Ethan.

The name landed like a stone in my gut. So he was involved. Not with his presence, but with his power. His orders.

The next few hours were a blur of efficiency. They drew blood, wheeled in an ultrasound machine, and ran tests with a speed that felt less like medical care and more like an assembly line. They were looking for something specific.

Finally, Dr. Smith returned, a new file in his hand. He stood at the foot of my bed, a grim reaper in a lab coat.

"Congratulations, Mrs. Ashford," he said, and the word was a mockery. "Your physical condition is excellent. Your kidneys, in particular, are in perfect health. And your blood type and HLA markers are a perfect match."

My blood ran cold. "A perfect match? For who?"

He dropped the pretense of politeness. The mask fell away, revealing the cold, hard face of a man following orders. "For Mia. She suffered severe internal bleeding in the accident. It led to acute kidney failure. She needs a transplant. Immediately."

The room spun. The sterile white walls seemed to press in on me. He couldn't be serious. It was a joke. A sick, twisted joke.

I had just survived a building collapse. I was lying in a hospital bed, broken and bruised. And my husband wasn't here to comfort me. He was here to harvest me.

"No," I whispered, shaking my head. The movement was agony.

Dr. Smith's expression didn't change. "The surgery is scheduled for tonight. 8 PM. Mr. Ashford has already signed the consent forms on your behalf, as your legal guardian in this emergency situation."

My legal guardian. My husband. Signing away my body parts as if I were a car he was stripping for salvage. The sheer, monstrous arrogance of it stole my breath.

Rage, pure and hot, burned through the pain. I tried to push myself up, but the fire in my leg was blinding. I fell back against the pillows, gasping.

I locked my eyes on his. "I do not consent," I said, each word a shard of ice.

The young nurse behind him flinched, taking a small step back.

For the first time, an emotion flickered across Dr. Smith's face. It wasn't pity. It was contempt. He leaned in close, his voice a low, menacing whisper meant only for me.

"Mrs. Ashford, this isn't a negotiation. This is a command from the man who owns a wing of this hospital. The man who signs my checks." He straightened up, his professional mask back in place. "Don't make things ugly."

The last of the warmth in my body evaporated. This wasn't just a tragedy. It wasn't just a betrayal.

It was a conspiracy. A premeditated theft, with my husband as the architect. And I was the prize.
