His Unwanted Wife Is A Top Scientist Novel Cover

His Unwanted Wife Is A Top Scientist

For four years, I played the perfect, naive, low-income wife to my wealthy husband Duke, completely hiding my true identity as a top-secret DARPA scientist. On our anniversary, I discovered he was having an affair with an old-money socialite named Adelia. He used our marital assets to buy her a half-million-dollar Birkin bag, but that wasn't the worst part. While hiding in a parking garage, I recorded him telling his mistress that the daily prenatal vitamins he lovingly gave me were actually high-dose contraceptives. He had secretly sterilized me to ensure I would never produce a "low-class" heir, planning to toss me aside with a tiny settlement in six months. When I confronted him, he violently attacked me, smashed my head against a marble dresser, and locked me in our bedroom. I thought of the four years I spent crying in doctors' offices, blaming my own body for my infertility, while he held my hand and comforted me with perfect, monstrous concern. I didn't wait to be punished. I climbed down the second-story balcony in the dark, leaving behind every diamond and luxury bag he had ever given me. Sitting in the back of a taxi, I wiped the blood from my forehead and opened a secure app on my phone. "Divorce fraud. Initiate sequence." It was time for him to finally meet Dr. Patterson.

Chapter 4

Helen left at five o'clock precisely.

She'd never left at five. In four years, she'd always stayed late, always been the last to leave, always found reasons to remain in the building where her real work happened. Today she walked out with the administrative staff, with the security guards changing shifts, with the normal people who had normal lives and normal marriages.

Her car waited in the employee lot. A 2012 Toyota Corolla with 140,000 miles and a dent in the rear bumper. She'd bought it with cash from her government salary, the salary Duke didn't know about, the salary that would have made a mockery of his forty-five-thousand-dollar assessment.

The engine turned over on the third try. She pulled into traffic, heading west toward Manhattan.

The city rose before her, glass and steel catching the last of the sunset. She'd loved this view once. She'd believed it represented possibility, ambition, the American dream of reinvention. Now she saw it as a fortress. A place where people like Duke and Adelia conducted their lives, while people like her serviced the machinery from the outside.

She found the address easily. Adelia's building. A pre-war luxury tower on the Upper East Side, the kind with a doorman in livery and a lobby that looked like a museum. Helen drove past once, then circled the block. She found a parking space half a block down, partially obscured by a delivery van. She turned off the engine.

The darkness gathered. Streetlights flickered on. Helen watched the building's entrance through the gap between the van and a parked SUV.

At 6:47, the Maybach arrived.

She knew the car. She'd ridden in it twice, both times to events where she'd been introduced as "Duke's wife" and then ignored for the remainder of the evening. It was black, custom, longer than standard. The license plate read FITZ1.

It stopped directly in front of the building's entrance. The VIP zone. A fire hydrant zone. A zone where tickets didn't matter because people like Duke didn't receive tickets.

The driver emerged. White gloves. Gray uniform. He opened the rear door with a small bow.

Duke stepped out.

Helen's breath stopped. She watched him adjust his cuffs, check his phone, look up at the building with an expression she'd never seen directed at her. Anticipation. Eagerness. The look of a man who was exactly where he wanted to be.

The revolving door spun. Adelia emerged.

She'd changed since morning. The Chanel suit was gone, replaced by something red and clinging, something that moved like liquid when she walked. Her hair was down now, falling past her shoulders in waves that caught the streetlight.

She didn't hesitate. She crossed the sidewalk in three strides and launched herself into Duke's arms.

He caught her. Of course he caught her. His hands went to her waist, her back, her hair. He buried his face in her neck. Then he pulled back, just far enough, and kissed her forehead with a tenderness that made Helen's vision blur.

They stood like that, entwined, while the city flowed around them. A taxi honked. A pedestrian stared. Neither of them noticed. Neither of them cared.

Helen's hands found her phone. She opened the camera. She zoomed. She pressed the shutter again and again, the sound disabled, the flash off. The timestamp recorded each image. The location tagged automatically. Evidence. Proof. The documentation of her own humiliation.

In the frame, she saw Adelia's arm. The Himalayan hung from her elbow, catching the light, announcing itself to anyone who knew how to read the signal.

Duke helped Adelia into the car. He followed her, sliding across the leather seat until their thighs touched. The driver closed the door. The Maybach merged into traffic, heading north, toward the restaurants, the hotels, the places where Helen had never been invited.

She lowered her phone. Her hands were steady. Her breathing was even. She felt nothing, she told herself. She felt nothing at all.

The phone buzzed.

A text from Duke. She opened it.

Working late. International dinner. Don't wait up.

Helen stared at the screen. She read it three times. The lie was so casual, so automatic, that she wondered how many times he'd sent similar messages. How many "working late" evenings had actually been this. How many nights she'd spent alone in the Long Island house, believing in his exhaustion, his dedication, his love.

She typed back. One word.

Okay.

She sent it. Then she started the engine. She pulled out of the parking space, heading east, away from Manhattan, away from the Maybach and the Himalayan and the life she'd never been permitted to enter.

In the rearview mirror, the city lights blurred. She realized she was crying. She wiped her face with her sleeve, angry at the weakness, angry at the tears that came now, when she needed clarity most.

She drove until she found the Queensboro Bridge. She crossed it. The city fell behind her. The Long Island suburbs opened before her, the safe streets, the proper houses, the life she'd built on foundations of sand.

She didn't go home. She drove to a parking lot near the water. She sat with the engine off, watching the darkness, feeling the cold seep through the Corolla's inadequate heating.

When her phone buzzed again, she ignored it.

When it buzzed a third time, she turned it off.

She sat in silence, in darkness, in the knowledge of what she was. What she'd been. What she'd allowed herself to become.

The tears stopped eventually. The cold became bearable. Helen Patterson looked out at the black water and made a decision she should have made four years ago.

No more.
