His Unwanted Wife Is A Top Scientist Novel Cover

His Unwanted Wife Is A Top Scientist

For four years, I played the perfect, naive, low-income wife to my wealthy husband Duke, completely hiding my true identity as a top-secret DARPA scientist. On our anniversary, I discovered he was having an affair with an old-money socialite named Adelia. He used our marital assets to buy her a half-million-dollar Birkin bag, but that wasn't the worst part. While hiding in a parking garage, I recorded him telling his mistress that the daily prenatal vitamins he lovingly gave me were actually high-dose contraceptives. He had secretly sterilized me to ensure I would never produce a "low-class" heir, planning to toss me aside with a tiny settlement in six months. When I confronted him, he violently attacked me, smashed my head against a marble dresser, and locked me in our bedroom. I thought of the four years I spent crying in doctors' offices, blaming my own body for my infertility, while he held my hand and comforted me with perfect, monstrous concern. I didn't wait to be punished. I climbed down the second-story balcony in the dark, leaving behind every diamond and luxury bag he had ever given me. Sitting in the back of a taxi, I wiped the blood from my forehead and opened a secure app on my phone. "Divorce fraud. Initiate sequence." It was time for him to finally meet Dr. Patterson.

Chapter 2

Helen didn't sleep.

She sat on the living room sofa in her thin cotton nightgown, knees drawn to her chest, watching the Long Island sky shift from black to gray to the pale pink of false dawn. The rain had stopped sometime after midnight. The gardens outside glistened with wetness. Everything looked clean. Everything looked new.

She felt ancient.

The digital clock on the mantelpiece ticked from 5:59 to 6:00. The heating system hummed on, blowing dry air across her bare arms. She didn't shiver. She didn't feel the temperature at all.

Her mind kept replaying fragments. Duke's voice. Forty-five thousand a year. The laugh. She literally cannot survive without me. The warmth when he spoke Adelia's name. The kind of thing that actually matters.

She'd spent four years believing she was building something. A marriage. A partnership. A life. She'd been building a cage, and she'd been grateful for the bars.

The electronic lock on the front door chimed.

Helen didn't move. She watched the door swing open, watched Duke step through with the morning cold clinging to his overcoat. He looked tired. There were shadows beneath his eyes that hadn't been there yesterday. He'd been with Adelia. In Manhattan. Doing things that mattered.

He saw her.

His eyebrows drew together. That small vertical line appeared between them, the one she'd once found endearing. Now she saw it for what it was: irritation at an unexpected obstacle.

"Helen." He recovered quickly. The smile slid into place, the one that reached his mouth but not his eyes. "You're up early."

He crossed the room toward her, arms opening for the embrace that had begun and ended every day of their marriage. The ritual greeting. The performance of intimacy.

Helen smelled it before he touched her. Beneath his cologne, beneath the cold air, something floral and sharp. A woman's perfume. Not hers. She'd never owned anything that expensive, that distinctive. She'd never needed to. She'd been the woman who smelled like drugstore body wash and the lavender sachets she kept in her drawers.

Her stomach convulsed. She turned her head. His arms closed around empty air.

Duke stopped. His hands hung in the space where she'd been. She watched the confusion flicker across his face, then the anger. He wasn't used to this. He wasn't used to her having boundaries.

"What is it?" The irritation leaked into his voice. "Are you sulking because I worked late?"

Helen stood. Her legs ached from sitting too long. She faced him, keeping two meters between them. The distance felt necessary. The distance felt like oxygen.

"Where were you?"

The question hung in the morning silence. Duke's jaw tightened. She watched him construct the lie, watched the micro-expressions shift: the slight flare of his nostrils, the almost-imperceptible movement of his Adam's apple.

"Merger emergency. Boston office." He reached for her hand. She let him take it. His palm was warm. She thought of where that hand had been. "I'm sorry about dinner. I'll make it up to you."

He reached into his briefcase. The orange box emerged, that particular shade that announced itself before the logo became visible. Hermès. He held it out to her with the casual generosity of a man who'd forgotten to buy milk.

"Happy anniversary. A day late."

Helen looked at the box. She didn't touch it. Yesterday, she would have wept with gratitude. Yesterday, she would have believed this meant he remembered, meant he cared, meant the distance was her imagination.

Now she saw the calculation. The price of her silence. The cost of her continued compliance.

"Thank you." Her voice sounded strange in her own ears. Flat. Empty.

Duke noticed. His eyes narrowed, reassessing. He was intelligent, she gave him that. He'd built a fortune on reading weaknesses, on knowing exactly how much pressure to apply and where.

"You're angry." He made it a statement. "Because I missed dinner. Because I work too hard to support this lifestyle you enjoy." He stepped closer. She held her ground. "Helen. I don't have time for this. I have a board meeting in two hours. If you have something to say, say it. Otherwise, I need to shower."

She looked at him. Really looked. The perfect skin, maintained by dermatologists she couldn't afford. The teeth, straightened in adolescence by orthodontists whose names appeared on hospital wings. The confidence that radiated from every pore, the absolute certainty that the world would bend to accommodate his needs.

"Where were you?" she asked again.

"Boston." The lie came faster this time. "I told you. The Harrison acquisition-"

"Your collar." Helen pointed. "Lipstick. On the inside. Left side."

Duke's hand didn't move. He simply paused, his gaze turning from irritated to something colder, more analytical. He looked her up and down slowly, as if assessing a malfunctioning appliance. A small, dismissive smile touched his lips.

"You're becoming imaginative, Helen." He dropped his hand from her arm. "Is this what boredom does to you? You invent dramas to pass the time?" He reached for her again, and this time his grip closed around her wrist. Hard enough to leave marks. "I provide everything for you. Everything. The least you can do is trust me."

Helen looked at his fingers on her skin. She thought of the coffee burn, still throbbing beneath her sleeve. She thought of the trust fund. Thirty thousand a month for Adelia. The price of her own trust, apparently, was somewhat lower.

"I need to get ready for work." She pulled her wrist free. It took more effort than it should have. "I'll be late."

She turned toward the stairs. The orange box sat on the sofa cushion, unopened, unwanted.

"Helen."

She stopped. Didn't turn.

"This conversation isn't over." Duke's voice had dropped to that register she knew, the one that preceded serious discussions about her behavior, her attitude, her failure to appreciate his generosity. "We'll continue tonight. I expect you to be in a more reasonable frame of mind."

Helen climbed the stairs. Her hand didn't shake on the banister. Her breath came steady and even.

In the bathroom, she locked the door. She looked at herself in the mirror. The woman staring back had dark circles beneath her eyes and a burn mark on her hand and something new in her expression. Something hard.

She opened her phone. She searched: Hermès scarf. Limited edition. Availability.

The results loaded. She scrolled through images of the pattern in Duke's orange box. A horse motif. Classic. Boring. The kind of thing a man bought when he asked a sales associate what wives liked.

Then she found it. A forum post from three months ago. Just got my Himalayan! Had to take the matching scarf for quota, but worth it. The bag is everything.

Quota. The word stuck in her throat.

She searched more. Hermès quota. Purchase history. How to get a Birkin.

The knowledge assembled itself. The game. The rules. The thousands of dollars in accessories required to qualify for the privilege of buying the actual desired item. The scarf in Duke's orange box wasn't a gift. It was garbage. The wrapper from someone else's prize.

Helen closed her eyes. She breathed through her nose, slow and controlled, the way she'd learned during her dissertation defense. The way she'd learned during classified briefings where generals asked questions she couldn't fully answer.

When she opened her eyes, the woman in the mirror had made a decision.

She would find out who had received the bag.
