His Pride Shattered, My Heart Released Chapter 1

The shrill ringing of the alarm clock shattered the early morning silence.

Chloe Sullivan groggily reached out to hit the snooze button, her eyes still heavy with sleep. She rolled over, intending to steal a few more minutes of rest, but instead, her face collided with a warm, solid chest.

Startled, she snapped her head up, her amber eyes widening as they met the striking, sculpted features of the man lying beside her.

Julian Astor IV lay there, a faint shadow of exhaustion under his eyes, his thin lips pressed together. Even in the vulnerability of sleep, he exuded an aura of effortless power and elegance.

It took a moment for the reality of her surroundings to fully settle in. She had actually moved into Julian's sprawling Fifth Avenue penthouse.

As Chloe stared, momentarily lost in her thoughts, the man before her suddenly opened his eyes. They were a deep, fathomless blue, sharp and clear despite the early hour.

"Morning," Julian said, his voice carrying a husky, sleep-roughened edge. His gaze briefly flicked over her bare shoulders before he added, his tone flat, "Go get dressed."

A hot flush crept up Chloe's neck. She hurriedly averted her eyes, suddenly hyper-aware of her lack of clothing. "R-right. Okay," she stammered, scrambling out of the tangled sheets.

By the time Julian emerged from the en-suite bathroom, he was wearing a plush white bathrobe. The collar hung loosely open, revealing the smooth, muscular lines of his chest. It was a sight that was undeniably captivating.

Even though Chloe had seen him like this countless times over the past few months, she still felt a traitorous blush heat her cheeks. She quickly tore her gaze away, practically sprinting into the bathroom and shutting the door behind her.

When she finally finished her morning routine and stepped out, she found Julian already in the massive, state-of-the-art kitchen. He was moving with quiet efficiency, and a plate of freshly toasted bread already sat on the marble island.

"Come eat," Julian instructed, carrying a bowl of freshly tossed salad out of the kitchen. He paused, noticing her standing frozen near the hallway, and his brow furrowed in a slight frown. Snapped out of her daze, Chloe quickly walked over and took a seat at the dining table.

The breakfast smelled wonderful, but the atmosphere was stifling. The only sounds in the cavernous room were the quiet clinking of silverware against porcelain. It was a silent routine they had fallen into, eating their meals without exchanging a single word.

Julian slid a portion of the salad toward her. His voice, when he finally spoke, was low and distinctly cool. "I have a corporate gala to attend tonight. I won't be coming back, so don't wait up for me."

"I can..." wait for you, she wanted to say.

But the last two words lodged in her throat, impossible to voice.

Julian paused, his fork hovering over his plate. He looked up, his gaze piercing and indifferent. "What?"

"Nothing. I understand," Chloe murmured, dropping her gaze to her plate.

She took the salad, a bitter, indescribable feeling settling heavily in her chest. It was a familiar ache, one she tried to ignore every day.

Once breakfast was over, she watched Julian stand up to retrieve his bespoke suit. Wanting to be useful, she hastily finished her food and gathered the plates, carrying them to the sink.

In her distraction, the soapy water made the porcelain slick. A plate slipped from her grasp, shattering against the bottom of the sink with a loud crash. As she instinctively reached down to pick up the jagged pieces, a sharp edge sliced into her finger. She hissed, drawing in a sharp breath as a bead of bright red blood welled up.

Julian heard the noise and walked over. Without a word, he opened a drawer, retrieved a band-aid, and handed it to her. "Be more careful next time."

"Thank you," Chloe whispered. She knew he was always this emotionally detached, but the coldness of his reaction still stung.

A normal boyfriend-or a husband-would have shown a flicker of concern. They would have checked the wound, maybe even scolded her gently. But as Chloe silently wrapped the band-aid around her finger, the man at the door had already slipped on his polished leather shoes. The heavy oak door clicked shut behind him, leaving her entirely alone in the sprawling penthouse.

For the past few months, she had lived here under the guise of being Julian's girlfriend, quietly taking care of the domestic chores.

He wasn't entirely heartless. When he had free time, he would take her shopping or help prepare meals. But... Julian had never explicitly defined what she was to him.

He had never taken her to any public events, let alone introduced her to his circle of friends or family.

Sometimes, Chloe desperately wanted to ask him where they stood. What exactly was their relationship? Who was she in his eyes?

But every time the words formed on her tongue, she swallowed them back. She was terrified that asking the question would shatter the fragile illusion they had built.

It was pathetic, really, how much she was willing to endure just to stay by his side.

After letting the water run over the broken shards to wash away the soap, Chloe finally snapped out of her melancholy. She carefully cleaned up the mess, changed into her work clothes, and headed out to her photography studio in SoHo.

The moment she stepped into her office and set her bag down, her assistant, Olivia Hayes, rushed in, looking frantic.

"Chloe, you're finally here!" Olivia gasped, barely stopping to catch her breath. "That VIP client we booked for today? She just called and said she has some 'important business' tonight, so she's demanding we move the shoot up to this afternoon."

"Move it to the afternoon?" Chloe frowned, her professional instincts kicking in.

Olivia scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Back when she was a nobody, she used to email us every month begging for a magazine spread. Now look at her! When her team called to change the time, they were so unbelievably arrogant!"
