HIS MAFIA HEIR SHE HID FOR SEVEN YEARS Novel Cover

HIS MAFIA HEIR SHE HID FOR SEVEN YEARS

Don Dante Marchetti paid Elena Cross off and dismissed their night together as a mistake. Seven years later, he walks into her gallery and sees his own eyes staring back at him from her son's face. Elena changed her name twice and raised the boy alone, burying a secret she believed could get him killed. Now Dante knows the truth, and he refuses to lose them again. But claiming his heir means protecting him from the rival family circling closer and a trusted friend's betrayal that cuts deeper than either expects. As Dante fights to earn his place in their lives, Elena must decide whether loving him again is worth the danger his name carries. This time, he's not just claiming his son. He's vowing to destroy anyone who threatens what's his.

Chapter 1

They agreed, in the end, to nothing dramatic-a coffee, two days from now, somewhere public and neutral, where they could talk without an exhibit crowd thirty feet away and a seven-year-old within earshot. Elena walked Dante out through the side entrance deliberately, away from the main floor, away from Leo, who had moved on to the dessert table and was, blessedly, occupied with a plate of tiny lemon tarts he had no intention of finishing before demanding a second plate. The side hallway was quieter, lined with the gallery's overflow storage-crates stacked two and three high, bubble wrap still clinging to the corners of frames that hadn't found wall space yet. Their footsteps echoed against the concrete in a way that made the whole walk feel longer than it was. Neither of them spoke. There didn't seem to be anything left that could be said out loud in a hallway with cameras, and Elena found herself acutely aware of the distance between their shoulders, the careful two feet neither of them closed. She'd walked this hallway a hundred times without thinking about it. Tonight every step felt measured, like she was performing normalcy for an audience of exactly one man who already knew better than to believe it.It was near the loading dock, in the last stretch before the exit, that Frank Delgado saw him.Frank had worked security at the gallery for six years, mostly a quiet job-checking bags, keeping an eye on drunk collectors near the sculptures, occasionally walking a nervous young artist to their car after a show ran late. Elena had never once, in six years, seen him look the way he looked now. All the color went out of his face at once, like someone had pulled a plug somewhere behind his eyes. His hand drifted, instinctively, toward the radio clipped to his belt before he seemed to catch himself and let it fall back to his side, slow and deliberate, the way a man moves when he's reminding his own body not to do something."Mr. Marchetti," Frank said, and his voice came out carefully, deliberately even, pitched exactly the way a man speaks when he's decided in advance not to let his voice shake. "Didn't realize you were on the guest list tonight.""Frank." Dante nodded at him, unbothered, already moving toward the exit like the exchange cost him nothing at all. "Good to see you're still upright."It was such an odd thing to say that Elena almost asked what it meant. Something in Frank's face told her not to-a tightness around his eyes, the particular stillness of a man choosing, very deliberately, not to react to something.Dante didn't look back once he'd passed through the door. Elena watched the space where he'd been for a moment longer than she meant to, aware of Frank beside her, aware that whatever composure he'd been holding together for the last thirty seconds was costing him something visible. It wasn't until Dante's car had pulled out of the alley and disappeared around the corner, taillights swallowed by the dark, that Frank turned to Elena, and whatever professional calm he'd managed to hold together in front of Dante fell away entirely, all at once, like a held breath finally let go."Ms. Cross." His voice had dropped low, almost a whisper, though there was no one left in the alley to overhear them. "Do you know who that is?"• • •"I know him," Elena said carefully, wrapping her arms around herself against a cold that had nothing to do with the night air.Frank studied her for a moment, like he was deciding how much a person deserved to know before it became too late to warn them at all. "I worked a security contract at a restaurant downtown, years back. Before this job." He glanced toward the empty street where the car had disappeared, like saying it out loud might somehow summon it back. "There was a night a man got out of line with one of the Marchetti associates. Nothing dramatic-a shove, some words, the kind of thing that happens in any restaurant on any given Friday. Wasn't even Dante himself in the room. Just someone connected to the family, sitting three tables over.""What happened?""That man didn't come back to work the next week," Frank said. "Or the week after. His manager told us he'd quit, moved out of state for a family thing. Nobody in that restaurant ever said otherwise, not out loud, not once, in six years of me working there. Nobody ever said what actually happened. Nobody had to. You could feel it in the way people stopped saying his name, the way conversations just steered around the empty space where he used to stand."Elena felt something in her stomach go very still-the stillness of a person absorbing information their body understands before their mind fully catches up. "And you're telling me this because-""Because you looked at that man tonight like you already knew exactly how dangerous he could be," Frank said, "and I wanted to make sure you weren't wrong about the shape of it.""I'm not trying to scare you," he added, softer now, reading something in her face that made his own expression gentle, almost apologetic. "You run a good exhibit, Ms. Cross. You're kind to the staff, you remember our names, you never once talk down to anybody working the floor. I like you. That's why I'm saying this at all. Whatever business you have with that family, be careful. People don't walk away from the Marchettis by accident. They walk away because they learned, somewhere along the line, that it's the only way to stay standing."Elena thanked him, made herself smile like the whole conversation hadn't just rearranged something in her chest, and went back inside to finish the evening-smiling for the rest of the guests, laughing at the right moments, thanking the collector for the generous loan of his exhibit, shaking a dozen hands with a steadiness she'd perfected over seven years of holding her whole life together with both hands and never once letting it show. But underneath it, walking the gallery floor one more polite lap before she could finally lock the doors, Frank's words sat like a stone she couldn't put down, no matter how many times she tried to set it aside for later. Every laugh she produced for a departing guest felt thinner than the last. She had told herself, for seven years, that she'd run because Dante hadn't cared enough to fight for her. Some nights, in the dark, in an apartment three states away with Leo asleep down the hall, she'd almost managed to convince herself that was the whole truth-that the ache of it was simple heartbreak and nothing more complicated than that.It had never been the whole truth. Not even close. And now, for the first time in years, someone else had said it out loud instead of leaving her alone with the suspicion.
