Chapter 4

The digital clock on the tablet screen flashed a blinding red.

00:00:15.

00:00:14.

"Read the script, Nora," Adrian ordered. "Save yourself the humiliation."

I picked up the Official Statement of Apology. The thick cardstock felt heavy against my fingertips. I stared at the carefully typed words, designed to strip away every ounce of my credibility.

00:00:12.

I ripped the paper straight down the middle.

The sharp tear echoed through the dining room, cutting through the hum of the air conditioning.

Adrian lunged forward. He slammed his hands onto the edge of the table, knocking the silver anniversary frame flat against the wood.

I tossed the torn halves onto the mahogany. "I acknowledge the genetic results," I told the camera, projecting my voice over Adrian's sudden movement. "The hospital error is under active investigation. But I won't apologize for a crime I didn't commit."

"Cut the feed!" Celeste yelled. She abandoned her spot by the fireplace and rushed toward the tablet.

"Publish the raw data of that alleged email, Celeste," I challenged, staring into the lens. "Let the cybersecurity team verify the routing headers. Show the investors the truth."

Adrian smacked his palm against the tablet screen. The green microphone icon turned gray.

"I refuse the Kessler name," I continued, speaking fast, knowing the video feed still ran without audio. "I refuse the trust fund shares. I only demand the settlement for my undocumented labor."

Adrian yanked the tablet charger from the wall. He flipped the device face down. The broadcast died.

The sudden silence in the room felt heavier than the shouting.

"You just destroyed your own life," Adrian snarled. He pointed a shaking finger at my face. "Do you have any idea what you just did to the company stock? The board will crucify you."

"The board will demand an audit," I corrected. "They'll want to know why the lead developer of their primary security software hasn't been paid in three years."

I pointed to his phone resting near the overturned picture frame. The secondary monitor still showed the live chat scrolling at breakneck speed.

User_882: Wait, she doesn't want the money?

Investor_T: Show the email headers like she asked.

TechGuy99: SafeTrace owes her 4.8M? What labor?

Adrian snatched the phone and shoved it into his suit pocket. His chest heaved. He glared at me, the polished corporate mask gone.

"I'll bury you in litigation," Adrian promised. "I'll tie you up in court until you can't afford a cup of coffee."

"You can try," I said. "But you can't forge my signature on a marital proxy while the public is watching."

Celeste stepped out of the shadows near the corner of the room. She smoothed the front of her designer dress, her jaw set in a hard line.

"I think your story is falling apart," I told her. "You wanted a public execution. You got a public inquiry."

Celeste scoffed. "You think you won because you yelled at a camera? You have zero leverage. You have no money, no title, and now, no home."

She walked around the table and stopped behind Julian's chair. She placed both hands on the boy's shoulders. Julian flinched, then forced himself to sit still. He kept his eyes glued to the Persian rug.

"We're giving you a choice," Celeste announced. Her voice dropped the frantic pitch from earlier, settling into a cold, calculated rhythm. "You can write a new apology. A real one. You'll confess to the manipulation on a press release tomorrow morning."

"I just gave my statement," I said.

"If you confess," Celeste continued, raising her chin, "Adrian will allow the joint custody arrangement to remain in place. You'll get every other weekend with Julian. We'll even let you keep your little startup shares."

My stomach tightened. I looked at my son.

Julian gripped the silver admin bracelet on his wrist. His knuckles turned white.

"You're holding my son hostage for a PR stunt," I said.

"We're protecting the Kessler brand," Adrian said. He stepped up to stand beside his sister. "The investors need a villain. You fit the profile. Sign the confession, take the blame, and you get to see your kid."

"And if I refuse your extortion?" I asked.

"Then I'll testify," Celeste said. She offered a thin, practiced smile. "I'll tell the family court how you aggressively tried to steal my inheritance. I'll say you threatened me. Adrian will file an emergency restriction order. You won't see Julian at all."

"You're using a twelve-year-old boy as leverage," I said.

"We're protecting him from a fraud," Adrian corrected. He crossed his arms. "Make your choice, Nora. Sign a confession, or lose your son."

"Dad, don't do that," Julian whispered. He finally looked up, his eyes darting between Adrian and me. "You said she just had to leave for a month. You said we'd still talk on the phone."

"She has to learn her lesson, Julian," Celeste murmured, patting his shoulder. "She needs to admit what she did. She needs to show us she respects this family."

"I did nothing wrong," I said.

"You lied to us," Julian shot back, his voice cracking. "You lied about who you are."

"I found out three days ago," I repeated, keeping my tone steady. "The clinic called my personal cell phone. I went straight to your father. He's the one who set up this broadcast, not me."

"Then prove you care about me!" Julian yelled. "Just sign the paper so we can go back to normal! Why do you always have to fight everyone?"

I looked at the boy I had raised. His face was pale, his eyes wide with a desperate need for the conflict to end. Adrian and Celeste had backed him into a corner, forcing him to watch his mother choose between her dignity and his presence. They wanted me to break. They expected me to fold the moment they threatened my access to my child.

I reached into my blazer pocket. My fingers closed around the cold metal of my notary recording pen.

I pulled it out and pressed the top button. A tiny blue light flared to life near the clip.

"What's that?" Adrian demanded, taking a step back.

"A certified audio recorder," I said. "Linked directly to my legal counsel's cloud server."

Celeste's hands tightened on Julian's shoulders. Her smile faltered.

"You just threatened to weaponize the family court system to force a false public confession," I stated clearly into the microphone. "You offered to trade a child's custody for a corporate cover-up."

"Turn that off," Adrian warned. He reached for the pen.

I stepped back, keeping the device out of his reach. "I won't sign a fake apology," I said, keeping my gaze locked on Celeste. "I won't validate your fabricated email. I accept the risk of the restriction order."
