Chapter 5

At nine the next morning, the digital projector in the SafeTrace boardroom illuminated Celeste’s frozen smile across the frosted glass wall.

"Produce the patent transfer chain," I told the three corporate attorneys dialing in from the New York office. "Show me exactly where I surrendered the Aegis Loop architecture to Kessler Holdings."

Adrian paced the length of the conference table. He adjusted his silk tie, his jaw tense. "This is a waste of billable hours. My wife is throwing a tantrum."

"Former security supervisor," I corrected, dropping my empty keycard lanyard onto the polished oak. "And I want the documents."

The lead attorney, a gray-haired man named Marcus, typed rapidly on his end of the video call. "We're pulling the file room archives now, Mr. Kessler. Give us a moment."

Silence stretched through the boardroom. Celeste tapped her manicured nails against her ceramic coffee cup. She sat near the head of the table, projecting an air of absolute boredom.

"You have nothing," Celeste sneered. "You lived in our house. You ate our food. The company owns whatever little code you wrote. That's how corporate employment works."

Marcus cleared his throat through the boardroom speakers. "Mr. Kessler, we located the original agreement."

"Put it on the screen," Adrian ordered.

A scanned document replaced Celeste’s face on the projector. It was not a transfer of ownership. It was a single, heavily redacted page.

"This is a royalty-free license," Marcus explained, his voice losing its confident edge. "It grants SafeTrace the right to use the Aegis Loop software without payment. However, there's a contingency clause in section four."

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the table. "Read section four, Marcus."

"The license remains valid in perpetuity," Marcus read, squinting at his monitor, "provided that the original inventor, Nora Bennett, retains active employment as the Lead Security Supervisor for the licensee."

Adrian stopped pacing. He stared at the projected text, his eyes tracking the words over and over.

"She drafted a trap," Celeste hissed, standing up so fast her chair scraped against the hardwood floor. "She planned this from the beginning to hold the company hostage."

"I protected my work," I said. "Because I knew you'd eventually try to take it."

Adrian marched to the head of the table. He snatched a blank corporate letterhead from his leather folio. He grabbed a pen and began writing in sharp, aggressive strokes, pressing so hard the tip nearly tore the paper.

"You want to play technicalities?" Adrian asked, his voice a low growl. "You're not holding a gun to my company. You're a rogue employee, and you're done."

He slashed his signature across the bottom of the page and shoved it across the table. It slid over the polished wood and stopped against my folder.

"Notice of immediate termination," Adrian announced, pointing at the paper. "You don't work for SafeTrace. You have no ties to this group. Get out of my building."

I picked up the handwritten termination notice. I pulled my phone from my pocket and snapped a clear, high-resolution photo of his signature.

"Thank you," I said.

I opened the SafeTrace internal admin portal on my phone screen. I uploaded the photo of the termination notice to the central licensing directory.

I hit execute.

The boardroom speakers emitted a sharp, electronic chime. Adrian’s tablet lit up on the table. Celeste’s phone buzzed violently against the wood.

On the main projector, a red warning banner flashed across the corporate dashboard, overriding the video call.

LICENSE TERMINATION WARNING. 72 HOURS REMAINING.

"What did you just do?" Adrian demanded, rushing toward the screen.

"You fired me," I said calmly. "You severed the contingency clause. The system automatically registered the breach of contract. In seventy-two hours, SafeTrace loses all legal rights to distribute the Aegis Loop."

Celeste grabbed her phone, her eyes scanning the screen. Her face went pale, the smug arrogance draining away in an instant. "Adrian. The quarterly shipments."

"What about them?" he snapped, staring at the flashing red text.

"The system just flagged every pending enterprise order as a copyright infringement," she said, her voice rising in panic. "Forty-two million dollars in international shipments. They're all locked in the fulfillment queue. The status says pending legal review."

Adrian whipped his head toward me. "Unlock those orders, Nora."

He stepped toward me, his hands curling into fists at his sides.

"You're not sinking our quarter over a piece of paper," he ordered.

"I don't work here," I reminded him, waving the paper he had just signed. "You just put that in writing."

Celeste lunged across the table and snatched the physical inventor confirmation page from my open folder. She scanned the bottom of the parchment, her eyes darting across the lines of text.

A harsh laugh escaped her lips. "You're bluffing. Look at this, Adrian."

She slammed the page onto the oak table, pointing at the ink.

"Your name is right here," Celeste told him. "Right below hers on the inventor line. He co-signed the patent, Nora. He owns half of it."

Adrian looked at the page. He straightened his posture, a smug expression settling over his features. "She's right. I signed it eight years ago."

"You signed as a witness," I said.

"It's a routine marital formality," Celeste argued, waving a hand dismissively. "Husbands and wives share assets. He signed the corporate filing. He's the group executive. That makes it company property."

"You want to claim he's the co-inventor?" I asked, looking at Celeste, then at Adrian. "When a server crashes, you call me the responsible party. When it comes to the patent, you call it an administrative formality."

I pulled a digital notary stamp from my bag. I placed Adrian's handwritten termination notice side-by-side with the printed license terms on the table.

I stamped both documents. The heavy thud echoed in the silent room.

"I won't shut down the active security systems for our current clients," I told the lawyers, projecting my voice toward the microphone on the table. "I won't put hospitals and banks at risk because of your ego. But any new shipment leaving the warehouse today is a direct infringement of my intellectual property."

"You're going to bankrupt us!" Adrian yelled, slamming his hand against the wall.

"You bankrupted yourselves," I said. "Forty-two million dollars in orders stay exactly where they are until I get my settlement check."

The heavy glass door of the boardroom pushed open, interrupting the standoff.

Adrian spun around, ready to yell at whichever assistant dared to enter without knocking.

Julian stood in the doorway. He wore his school uniform, his backpack slung over one shoulder. He walked right up to the table, his eyes dropping to the documents scattered across the wood.

He stopped moving. He stared directly at the inventor confirmation page Celeste had left sitting in the open. He saw his father's bold signature resting right beneath my printed name.

Adrian lunged forward. He slammed his hand down, covering the bottom half of the parchment, hiding the ink from his son.

Julian stared at his father’s hand.

"Julian, wait outside," Adrian ordered, his voice tight and panicked.

Julian looked up, his jaw set in a hard line. "You always knew Mom invented it, didn't you?"
