Chapter 3

Julian’s question hung over the mahogany table, sharp and immovable.

"I asked you a question, Dad," Julian pressed. He held the patent document up, the thick parchment trembling in his small hands. "Why is Mom's name on this?"

Adrian snatched the paper from our son. He smoothed the creased edge against the table, his knuckles whitening. "It's a marital proxy, Julian. A standard corporate formality. Husbands and wives hold assets in trust for each other."

"A marital proxy requires a signed transfer agreement," I said. "Show it to me."

Adrian glared at the tablet broadcasting our faces. The viewer count flashed in the corner, climbing past eighteen thousand. "We're not discussing legal technicalities on a live feed. You're going to read the apology script."

"Find the transfer document, Adrian," I challenged. "You have the entire corporate legal database on your phone. Pull up the file. Show our investors exactly when I signed away my intellectual property."

"This is a family matter, Nora," he deflected, his tone dropping into a low warning.

"You made it a public matter the second you hit broadcast," I countered. "Show them the signature."

He tapped his screen, his thumb jabbing the glass. A muscle twitched in his cheek. Ten seconds passed in total silence. Then twenty. He swiped through folder after folder, his face flushing a dull red.

He could not find it. Because it did not exist.

"Enough of this," Celeste snapped. She stepped in front of Adrian, blocking the camera's view of his frantic scrolling. She grabbed his phone, tapped a sequence of buttons, and the massive flat-screen television mounted above the fireplace flared to life.

The live broadcast minimized to a corner of the screen. In the center, a blown-up image of an email appeared.

The date stamp read eight years ago. Three days before my wedding to Adrian.

"Look at the screen, Nora," Celeste commanded.

I stared at the black text stark against the white background.

To: N.Bennett at SafeTrace.net

From: Unknown Sender

Subject: The Truth.

Message: You are Helena's daughter. You are the match.

A rapid stream of comments exploded on the live feed, scrolling so fast they blurred together.

User449: She knew before she walked down the aisle?

Investor_T: Premeditated gold-digger.

KesslerFan: She played them all for a decade.

"You received this right before you married my brother," Celeste said, projecting her voice toward the tablet's microphone. "You didn't just stumble into this family. You targeted us. You knew exactly who you were, and you used that secret to wedge yourself into our wealth."

"I have never seen that email in my life," I said. I stepped closer to the television, squinting at the projection. "Look at the font rendering on the date stamp. It's visibly misaligned with the subject line. This is a modified screenshot."

"The timestamp is verified," Adrian added, recovering his composure. He pocketed his phone and crossed his arms. "You orchestrated this entire marriage. You wanted the prestige."

"I built a company from nothing while you were spending your trust fund on sports cars," I said. "I didn't need your prestige."

"Aunt Celeste is right," Julian muttered.

The sound of my son's voice cut through the anger. I turned to him. He dropped his gaze to his lap, refusing to meet my eyes.

"Julian, you know me," I said, keeping my tone steady. "You know how hard I work for this family."

"You just wanted the money," Julian said. He gripped the edge of his chair. "You never cared about us. She tells the truth, and she doesn't treat me like a prisoner."

"I have never treated you like a prisoner," I said.

"You locked me out of the lab!" he shouted, his head snapping up. "You took my gear. You monitor everything I do!"

He crossed his arms over his chest. As his sleeve pulled back, the dining room lights caught a flash of metal on his wrist.

A heavy silver band. The admin bracelet.

My stomach plummeted. Three months ago, I caught Julian trying to bypass the firewall on the unsandboxed quantum prototype. A single error in that code could fry the central servers and trigger a physical electrical fire in the lab. I confiscated the bracelet that very night, locked it in the company vault, and revoked his clearance.

I snapped my head toward Celeste. "You gave that back to him?"

She offered a thin, victorious smile. "He's a Kessler. He deserves freedom to explore his legacy. I returned it to him this afternoon."

"That's a Level Four security bypass," I said, my voice rising. "He's twelve years old. He tried to access an unstable prototype."

"I gave him root access, too," Celeste said smoothly. She rested a hand on Julian's shoulder. "He's brilliant. You were just holding him back because you wanted all the credit for the tech."

"You gave a child root access to an unshielded quantum core?" I demanded, slamming both hands onto the table. The silver anniversary frame rattled. "That's not freedom, Celeste. That's a catastrophic safety violation. He could trigger a thermal runaway."

"Don't yell at her!" Julian yelled back. He covered the silver band with his opposite hand, protecting it from my view. "She actually trusts me. She doesn't think I'm stupid like you do."

I looked at the boy I had raised. The defiance in his eyes mirrored his father’s. They had twisted my protection into oppression, and handed him a loaded weapon disguised as a gift.

"Julian, take the bracelet off," I instructed. "Right now."

"No," he said, shrinking back against Celeste.

"Leave him alone," Adrian intervened. "You have no authority here anymore."

I reached up and grabbed the thick plastic of my security supervisor lanyard. I unclasped the heavy badge, the one that granted me access to every server in the building, and tossed it onto the mahogany table. It landed next to the forged email printout with a sharp clatter.

"You want to talk about truth?" I asked, staring at Adrian. "Priya stood next to me at the registry office when I filed that patent eight years ago. She watched me sign the original paperwork. Call her. Put her on the broadcast right now."

Adrian’s jaw locked. He did not reach for his phone.

"Call her," I pushed. "Let the investors hear Priya confirm who actually owns the Aegis Loop architecture."

"Priya works for me," Adrian said coldly. "She'll say whatever I tell her to say."

"And as for your fabricated email," I continued, pointing at the television screen. "Pull up the raw headers right now. Let the tech team trace the routing server. If I received that eight years ago, it'll be sitting on the SafeTrace legacy servers. Show the metadata to the chat."

"We're not indulging your games," Adrian said. He reached over and tapped the tablet screen, cutting off the television display and bringing the live feed back to full screen. The comments continued to pour in, a relentless wave of digital judgment.

"Verify the headers, Adrian," I challenged. "Do it in front of the board members."

"I'm done negotiating with a liar," he stated, his voice dropping into a cold, hard register. "The thirty-day exile is no longer a suggestion. It's effective immediately. You'll leave this house tonight."

He tapped a secondary application on the tablet. A massive digital clock materialized on the live broadcast feed, hovering right below my face on the screen.

It read: 24:00:00.

The red numbers began to tick down immediately.

"You have twenty-four hours to draft a real apology and confess to this entire manipulation," Adrian said to the camera, framing himself as the betrayed patriarch. "If you want any chance of seeing your son again, you'll admit your guilt to the public."

The numbers on the screen ticked down. 23:59:59.

"And if I don't?" I asked.

Adrian leaned across the table. He pressed his palms against the wood, leaning into my space. The fake corporate warmth vanished, replaced by a ruthless glare.

"Apologize before midnight," Adrian said, his voice echoing through the silent room, "or you don't even touch the Whitmore name anymore."
