Chapter 1

My arranged marriage to Corrado Falcone lasted ten years.

In the end, my family was destroyed.

In a shootout, he took a bullet for me.

He died in my arms.

“Sofia, if there’s a next life, stay away from me.”

He said I was a curse.

The Falcone family said so, too.

I believed it.

Without his protection, my enemies swarmed.

I chose to end it with a single bullet.

The next time I opened my eyes, I was back in my father’s study.

He was asking me to choose a husband for our family’s alliance.

Two family files lay on the desk before me.

One was for Corrado Falcone.

The other was for Damian Valachi.

This time, I pointed to Damian’s file.

“He’s the one.”

My father was taken aback. “Sofia, haven’t you always favored the Falcones? Why the Valachis? They say he has a permanent leg injury.”

“And that he’s incapable of fathering an heir.”

My fingertip traced Damian’s name as I smiled. “I know.”

Damian Valachi, the underground king of Chicago.

Rumor had it the injury was permanent, leaving him unable to sire a child.

But in my last life, after I died, it was the Valachi family that devoured the Falcones.

It was he who avenged me.

My father’s face was etched with worry. “Sofia, this isn’t a game. Are you certain?”

“Papa, I’m not being childish.”

“Compared to the Falcones’ flashy reputation, the Valachi family can deliver the West Side port.”

“That is what the Moretti family needs.”

My father nodded. “Since your mind is made up, I hope you won’t regret it.”

Regret?

Marrying Corrado Falcone was the real hell.

In my last life, he humiliated me for ten years for the sake of Jessica Crowe.

In this life, I would give him back to her.

From now on, our slate would be clean.

Just as I stepped out of the study, I ran right into Corrado Falcone.

My fingertips trembled slightly.

He spotted me, and his brow furrowed. “Sofia, were you in there begging your father to marry you off to me again? Have some dignity.”

He could finally breathe a sigh of relief.

I would no longer be his problem.

“Want to hit the hunting grounds?” he asked, his tone dripping with arrogance, as if he were bestowing some great honor. “I had someone prepare a new rifle for you.”

If this had been my past life, I would have been ecstatic over this rare invitation.

But now, I only found it pathetic.

I shook my head. “I’m not going.”

Stunned by my first-ever rejection, Corrado sneered.

“What’s this? Learning to play hard to get?”

Seeing me lower my head in silence, he frowned again. “So now you’re playing games? Don’t be pathetic. My car will pick you up in two days. Be ready.”
