Chapter 3

I'd spent the whole afternoon preparing for a negotiation.

That was what dinner with a Whitmore would be. Two old families, a private room, careful smiles, his mother and my grandfather measuring each other over the wine list. I'd dressed for it in navy silk and the pearl studs my grandmother left me, and I'd rehearsed polite answers in the mirror like I was pitching a skeptical board.

At six-fifteen, forty-five minutes early, Hollis knocked on my door.

"Mr. Whitmore is downstairs, Miss Reed."

"His mother's car is early?"

"No, miss." Hollis sounded faintly amused. "Just Mr. Whitmore. He drove himself."

Julian was standing in the front hall when I came down, studying the lion knocker through the open door like it had personally offended him. He was taller than the sailboat photo suggested. Dark suit, no tie, collar open.

He turned when he heard my heels on the stairs, and he didn't smile right away. He looked at me like he was checking something.

"Evelyn."

"You're early. I thought your mother was handling this."

"My mother handles a lot of things. Not this." He slid his hands into his pockets. "I wanted to ask you something before anyone else is in the room."

"Okay."

"If you're doing this because another man hurt you, I'll take you to dinner, but I won't marry you."

The hall went very quiet. Somewhere behind me, Hollis found something urgent to do in the dining room.

"That's a hell of an opener," I said.

"I'd rather be honest now than polite later." His voice was even. "You don't owe me an answer tonight. You don't owe me one at all. But I'm not going to be the thing you grab because you're falling."

For seven years, Alex had told me what to understand. Understand the investors. Understand the timing. Understand why my name couldn't be on the patent, why I couldn't come to his parents' Thanksgiving, why love had to wait until the valuation was right.

Julian had just handed me a door and told me I was free to close it.

"Ask me again after dinner," I said.

Something eased in his shoulders. "Deal."

---

He took me to a small Italian place in the West Village with eight tables and no sign out front. No private room. No families. The owner kissed Julian on both cheeks and brought bread without being asked.

"I expected a lot more silverware," I said.

"I expected you to bring a lawyer." He poured my water. "So let's get the terms out of the way, since we're both thinking about them."

"You have terms."

"I have offers." He leaned back. "You keep your career, whatever it turns out to be. You don't have to stand next to me at fundraisers and smile for the Post. You don't change your name unless you want to. You don't give up a single job, client, or project for my family. If my mother asks you to, you tell her no, and I'll back you."

I set my fork down. "That's not how these marriages work."

"It's how this one would."

"What do you get out of it?"

"You."

I laughed, but it came out thin. "You don't know me, Julian. We've never had a real conversation."

"We've had one."

I frowned. He tore a piece of bread in half and didn't eat it.

"The Ainsley Children's Gala. Seven years ago. You were twenty-two. Some hedge fund guy offered you a VP title in front of half the room because your grandfather was standing right there." He met my eyes. "You told him you'd rather earn an entry-level job than be handed a corner office for your last name. Then you asked him whether he'd made the same offer to the waiter."

My face went hot. I remembered that night. I'd had two glasses of champagne and a lot of opinions.

"You were there?"

"I was the guy who laughed too loud and got glared at by the hedge fund guy." He smiled a little. "I went looking for you afterward. Wanted to introduce myself."

"And?"

"And you were by the coat check holding a boy's hand. Hoodie under a rented blazer. You were looking at him like he'd hung the moon." He shrugged, but there was nothing careless in it. "So I went home."

I didn't know what to say. Seven years. All that time, someone had remembered the version of me who refused to be handed things.

"That's why you said yes to your mother?"

"That's why I asked her to call." He finally ate the bread. "Now. Ask me whatever you want. I've got all night."

At the end of the evening, standing on my grandfather's steps, he asked me again.

This time I didn't tell him to wait.

---

Three weeks later, I walked into the Whitmore Foundation's annual gala with my full name printed on the guest list.

Evelyn Reed. Representing the Reed Family Trust.

Not Evie. Not Operations. Not an old friend.

The Plaza ballroom glittered with gold light and old money. Julian had been pulled away by a senator the moment we arrived, mouthing sorry over the man's shoulder, and I didn't mind. For the first time in years, I wasn't holding anyone's phone.

I was reading the sponsor wall when I saw the logo.

Cole Capital. Gold tier.

"Oh my God. Evelyn?"

I knew the voice before I turned around.

Vanessa Cole stood three feet away in emerald satin, the diamond pendant resting at her throat. Her arm was hooked through Alex's.

He looked thinner. Tired around the eyes. His gaze landed on me and stuck there.

"Wow." Vanessa's smile stretched wide. "I didn't think they let event staff in the front entrance. Are you here looking for a new job? Because honestly, good for you. Networking is so important after a big change."

"I'm not looking for anything," I said.

"Evie," Alex said quietly. "What are you doing here?"

"Attending a gala, Alex. Same as you."

Vanessa's laugh tinkled. "Sweetie, this is a ten-thousand-dollar plate." She glanced around and lifted two fingers at a passing staff member with a tablet. "Excuse me? Could you check something for us? I just want to make sure she has an invitation. No offense, Evelyn. It's a security thing."

The young man hesitated, looking between us.

"Go ahead," I said. "Check."

He tapped the screen. Before he could speak, a warm hand slid into mine.

Julian. Not grabbing, not pulling. He just laced his fingers with mine like he'd been doing it for years.

"Sorry," he murmured. "The senator wanted to talk about zoning. Everything okay?"

Vanessa's mouth opened. Closed.

"Julian Whitmore," she said, her voice suddenly bright. "Hi. We met at the Hamptons thing last summer. I'm Vanessa Cole."

"I remember." He didn't offer a hand.

"Darling, there you are."

Eleanor Whitmore swept toward us in silver, two photographers and a reporter from the Times trailing in her wake. She kissed Julian's cheek, then took my free hand and squeezed it.

Then she turned to the cameras, chin high.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I'd love for you to meet my son Julian, and my future daughter-in-law, Evelyn Reed."

The flashes went off like a burst of summer lightning.

Vanessa's face went blank. The staff member lowered his tablet.

And Alex stood completely still, the way he'd stood in that bedroom doorway on my security feed, staring at an empty closet.

Eleanor drew Julian toward the reporter. I started to follow.

Fingers clamped around my wrist.

"Evie." Alex's voice was rough, too low for the cameras. His grip was tight enough to hurt. "What the hell does she mean, future daughter-in-law?"

I looked down at his hand. Then I pulled my wrist free, and he was too stunned to hold on.

I gave him one look. Just one.

"It means I stopped being your old friend."

Werewolves were forced to interbreed with humans to survive, and the once-proud kingdoms fractured. Only one bloodline remained untouched by the curse, the ancient Lycans of Lupenreich, protected by powerful shamanic magic. Coveted by werewolves, hunted by witches, despised by vampires, the Lycans became both salvation and threat. And now, only one true heir remains... Sybil von Rosen was never meant to grow up among humans. Born a Lycan princess through a human surrogate, she was stolen from the castle as an infant by the very woman meant to nurse her, a woman who turned out to be a witch. Hidden beneath a powerful spell that caged her wolf and erased her scent from the supernatural world, Sybil was raised knowing exactly who she was... and exactly what she had been bred for. A womb. A crown. Her bloodline's legacy. But Sybil was never meant to be a broodmare queen. She grew up human with the strength and senses of a shewolf and the magic of the witches, which got transferred to her while she was still in the womb of her surrogate. She's strong, intelligent, disciplined, and lethal. An MMA champion. A combat instructor for a private military contractor. A woman who learned to fight before she ever learned to howl. When the magic of her witch mother begins to fade, and the werewolf King finally tracks them down, Sybil is summoned back to a kingdom that remembers her only as its missing heir. Betrayed by her hybrid fiancé, who abandoned her to marry the princess of their kingdom, Sybil made a decision that will shake three kingdoms. She returned. Not for love. Not for duty. For revenge... But the throne comes with chains. Instead of marrying one Alpha, she is bound to four-the Alpha Guardians of Lupenreich. Ruthless. Powerful. Pureblood. Feared across kingdoms. And fate claims they are her mates. There's only one problem. Sybil cannot feel her wolf, for it was caged deep within her soul. She cannot smell her mates. She is a Lycan princess trapped in a wolfless body. While her four Alphas believe they are claiming their future Luna and Queen, Sybil is already planning something far more dangerous. She will not stand beside a king. She will not be used to breed to secure bloodlines. And she certainly will not be ruled. If the kingdom wants a queen... They're about to kneel to a rebel queen. Because Sybil von Rosen is not an ordinary Luna. She is the last Lycan heir. The forbidden daughter of witches. The mate of four Alpha Guardians.
