You Hid Our Seven Years, Then Asked Why I Became a Whitmore Chapter 1

"Hold still," I said, tugging Alex's tie into place. "You look like you lost a fight with a coat hanger."

He laughed, low and easy, the way he used to laugh in our first office above a laundromat, back when Aster Labs was two laptops and a borrowed folding table.

Tonight it was a ballroom at the Fairmont, crystal chandeliers, and a fifty-million-dollar Series B.

"Better?" he asked.

"Almost." I smoothed his lapel, and my fingers brushed something hard in his inside jacket pocket. Small. Square. Velvet.

A jewelry box.

My heart stumbled. I pulled my hand back before he noticed.

"Evie!" Marcus, our head of events, waved a tablet at me from the edge of the stage. "The investor deck's frozen on slide twelve. The projections won't load."

"Give it to me."

I fixed it in three minutes. A broken link to an old spreadsheet. I'd built that model at two in the morning last March while Alex slept on our couch with his shoes still on.

When I handed the tablet back, Alex caught my wrist and kissed my forehead.

"What would I do without you?"

"Crash and burn, probably."

He smiled, but his eyes were already drifting toward the ballroom doors. "After tonight, everything's going to be different. I promise."

Seven years. Seven years of being the girlfriend nobody knew about, because investors liked founders who looked hungry and single and fully committed to the company. Seven years of "not yet, Evie."

Now there was a ring box in his pocket.

I believed him.

---

The room changed when Victor Cole walked in.

You didn't need to know who he was. You only had to watch every head turn toward the silver-haired man in the charcoal suit, the managing partner of Cole Capital, the firm that had just made Alex very rich.

The woman on his arm was his daughter, Vanessa. Mid-twenties, ivory silk dress, the kind of smile that had never once been told no.

She looked straight at Alex.

Alex looked back.

I told myself it meant nothing. He was being polite to the money.

The press pool swarmed him near the step-and-repeat banner. I stood beside him the way I always did, holding his phone and his speech notes.

A reporter from TechWire pushed her recorder forward. "Alex, quick question. Your colleague here has been at your side at every event for years. Readers want to know. Who is she to you, exactly?"

The cameras swung toward me.

I waited for him to say it. My partner. My girlfriend. My cofounder, at the very least, since half the code in our flagship product was mine.

Alex paused.

One second. Two. Three.

His gaze slid past me to Vanessa Cole, who was watching him with her head tilted, amused.

Then he smiled at the reporter.

"Evie? She's a very important old friend."

The reporter laughed politely. Somebody wrote it down.

Old friend.

Before I could breathe, Vanessa stepped in and hooked her arm through his like she'd done it a hundred times. "Alex, Daddy wants a picture of the two of us for the press release."

I waited for him to step away.

He didn't. He covered her hand with his and turned toward the flashes.

"Can we get you closer together?" a photographer called.

They moved closer.

Someone bumped my shoulder and said, "Sorry, could you step out of the shot?"

So I did. I stood outside the ring of cameras, holding the phone and the speech notes of a man who had just introduced me to the world as nobody.

---

I caught him in the service hallway behind the kitchen ten minutes later. It smelled like cleaning solution and roasted lamb.

"An old friend?" I said. "Seven years, Alex. What exactly were those?"

He glanced back toward the ballroom door before he answered. That told me more than anything else.

"Keep your voice down."

"Answer me."

"Evie, come on." He rubbed his jaw. "Cole Capital just put forty million into this company. Victor sits on the board now. And Vanessa, she's interested in me. Everyone can see it."

"I can see it. I was standing right there."

"Then you understand the situation." He lowered his voice like a man walking someone through a quarterly report. "This is not the moment to let a private relationship mess with the story we're selling. The market wants a young founder, unattached, with nothing but upside. You of all people know how perception works."

"So I'm a liability."

"I didn't say that."

"You didn't have to."

He sighed, the same sigh he used on engineers who missed deadlines. Then he pulled out his phone and turned the screen toward me.

"Marcus just texted. The livestream audio is out of sync and the sponsor reel isn't playing. Can you handle it? I'm due back on stage in twenty minutes."

I stared at him.

He had just erased me in front of every camera in the room, and now he was handing me a ticket.

"You're serious."

"You know this company better than anyone." He touched my arm, gentle, like that settled it. "Don't make tonight about us."

There was no us. He'd made that very clear.

---

The ballroom door swung open, and Vanessa leaned into the hallway, her perfume arriving a second before she did.

"There you are." She smiled at Alex, then at me, the way you smile at the coat-check girl. "You're Evelyn, right? Alex says you handle everything."

"Something like that."

She held out a small navy velvet box. The same box I'd felt against his ribs an hour ago.

"Could you hold onto this for me? He gave it to me backstage, and this dress has zero pockets." She laughed. "I'd die if I lost it."

My hands took it before my brain caught up.

"Vanessa," Alex said quickly. "Evie's busy—"

"It's fine," I said.

I opened it.

No ring. A diamond pendant on a fine platinum chain, the kind of piece with a serial number and a waiting list. A cream card was tucked into the lid in Alex's narrow, slanting handwriting.

To V. For a brand new beginning. — A.

After tonight, everything's going to be different.

He had meant every word. He just hadn't meant them for me.

I closed the lid gently and handed it back to Vanessa. "It's beautiful. You should keep it on you."

She blinked, a little thrown, then shrugged and slipped it into her clutch. "Okay. Thanks."

Alex was watching me now, really watching me, for the first time all night. "Evie. It's not what it looks like."

"It's exactly what it looks like."

I unclipped the staff badge from my dress. Laminated, slightly bent at one corner. EVELYN, OPERATIONS, in the font I'd picked out myself.

I took his hand, turned it palm up, and set the badge in it.

"Congratulations," I said. "Your old friend quits."

"You're overreacting. Evie. Evelyn!"

I was already walking. Past the kitchen, past Marcus calling my name, past the out-of-sync livestream that was no longer my problem.

Nobody followed me. I hadn't expected anyone to.

---

The apartment was dark when I let myself in. Our apartment, technically, though the lease had only his name on it. That had been his idea too.

His coffee mug sat in the sink. His running shoes were by the door, right where I'd tripped over them that morning and laughed.

I didn't cry. I didn't sit down. I didn't call my sister or open a bottle of wine.

I went to the hall closet, reached past his golf bag, and pulled out the suitcases.

One. Two. Three.

I lined them up in the middle of the living room and unzipped every one of them.

Then my phone lit up on the counter.

Alex.

I watched it ring until it stopped.
