Chapter 2

The weekend sun was a rare gift, and Britta spent it where it was free. She sat on a splintered park bench, a small smile on her face as she watched Leo scramble up the rusty slide. For a moment, the tension in her shoulders eased.

Then the moment shattered.

Her sister-in-law, Tammy Tucker, waddled into the park, her overweight son, Dustin, in tow. Tammy's eyes landed on Britta, and her mouth immediately twisted into a sneer.

Britta looked away, refusing to let Tammy poison this small piece of peace.

Dustin, a miniature tyrant in the making, shoved a little girl out of his way at the base of the slide.

Leo, ever the defender of justice, marched over.

"You should wait your turn!"

Dustin, a head taller and twice as wide, simply pushed Leo. Hard. Leo stumbled backward and fell, his knee scraping against the gravel. Dustin snatched the small toy truck from Leo's hand.

Leo's eyes welled with tears, but he didn't cry.

The smile on Britta's face vanished, replaced by a cold stillness. She was on her feet in an instant.

"Kids will be kids, Britta," Tammy called out, folding her arms, a smug look on her face. "Don't get your panties in a twist."

At that same moment, a black Lincoln Navigator glided to a silent stop on the street bordering the park. In the back seat, Eleanor Carlisle, a woman whose posture and presence commanded respect, paused her phone call. The small-town drama had caught her eye.

Britta ignored Tammy. She knelt beside Leo, checking his bleeding knee and murmuring soft words of comfort.

Then she stood up. She faced Dustin. Her height and the sudden ice in her eyes made the boy take an involuntary step back.

She held out her hand. Her voice was quiet, but it carried an unmistakable command.

"Give it back. And apologize to my son."

Dustin hesitated, glancing back at his mother for support. Bolstered by her presence, he clutched the truck behind his back.

Tammy stepped forward, shielding her son. "Who do you think you are, ordering my boy around? He's an unwanted bastard, so what if he got pushed? Is he made of glass?"

The word echoed in the sudden quiet of the playground. Bastard.

A few other parents and neighbors had stopped to watch, their whispers buzzing like flies.

In the Lincoln, Eleanor Carlisle's brow furrowed. The woman's language was vile.

Britta's eyes went dead cold. The time for words was over.

She moved. It was a blur of motion. She seized Dustin's wrist. A slight, expert twist of pressure. The boy yelped in pain, and the truck clattered to the ground.

"Bitch!" Tammy shrieked, lunging at Britta with her nails out, aiming for her face. "You dare touch my son!"

Britta sidestepped the clumsy attack, caught Tammy's arm, and in one fluid motion, used a simple joint lock to twist it behind her back. Tammy, fifty pounds heavier, was instantly immobilized, bent forward and helpless.

The park went silent. Jaws dropped.

Tammy struggled, squealing in pain and fury, but she couldn't move.

Inside the car, Eleanor's eyes widened in surprise, which quickly morphed into a look of profound interest. She leaned forward.

"Vince," she said to her driver. "Find out who that woman is. The tall brunette."

Britta picked up the toy truck and handed it to Leo. She looked down at the whimpering, defeated Tammy.

"Listen carefully," she said, her voice low and sharp. "If you or anyone in your family ever lays a hand on my son again, or calls him that name, this will be the least of your problems."

She released Tammy, who stumbled away, her face a mask of fear and hatred.

Britta took Leo's hand. Ignoring the stunned stares of everyone around them, she walked away from the park, her back straight, her head held high.

Leo squeezed her hand, his fear replaced by a wave of awe and absolute security. His mom was the strongest person in the world.

In the Lincoln, Eleanor watched them go. A slow, thoughtful smile spread across her face.

"Interesting. Very interesting."

She saw the poverty. She saw the struggle. But more than that, she saw a fighter. An unbreakable spirit.

Exactly what her son needed.
