They were waiting for her at the bottom of the stairs to her apartment. Tammy, her husband—Britta's brother—and her mother, Brenda. A tribunal of grievances.

"How dare you attack my wife and son in public!" her brother blustered, his face red, though his eyes couldn't quite meet hers.

Brenda, on cue, sank to the ground, slapping her thighs and wailing.

"Oh, the shame! My own daughter, a violent hooligan, disgracing the family!"

Neighbors peeked out of their doors, drawn by the commotion.

Britta pushed Leo behind her, her face a cold, hard mask. The last thread of familial obligation in her heart snapped.

"Dustin pushed Leo first," she stated, her voice devoid of emotion. "Tammy insulted him. I was protecting my son."

"He's just a kid!" Tammy shrieked, her courage returning with her reinforcements. "Your son is a fatherless bastard! What's the big deal if he gets touched? How dare you fight back!"

The word again. Bastard.

A dangerous light flared in Britta's eyes. She pressed the apartment key into Leo's small hand.

"Leo, go inside and lock the door," she said in a low, urgent voice. "Don't come out, no matter what you hear."

Leo's eyes were wide with fear, but he nodded, scurrying past them and fumbling with the lock. The deadbolt clicked shut.

Seeing Britta was ready to face them alone, Tammy grew bolder. She nudged her husband. "Go on! Teach her a lesson!"

Britta's brother lunged, reaching for her shoulder.

Britta didn't retreat. She moved forward. A quick sidestep, and her elbow drove hard into the soft part of his stomach. He grunted, doubling over. A clean, efficient leg sweep sent him sprawling to the dirty floor.

Brenda and Tammy stared, stunned. They had never seen the quiet, slender Britta move like that.

Tammy recovered first, screaming as she clawed at Britta, a set of keys clutched in her fist like a makeshift weapon.

Britta's eyes flashed. No more holding back. She caught Tammy's wrist, twisting it sharply. Tammy cried out as the keys fell, clattering on the concrete. Britta shoved her, and Tammy stumbled backward, crashing into a row of overflowing trash cans.

Seeing her allies defeated, Brenda went berserk. She scrambled to the apartment door and began hammering on it with her fists.

"You little bastard, you open this door! I'll beat you to death!"

Inside, Leo flinched at the sound of his grandmother's venomous screams.

Hearing the threats directed at her son was the final straw. A white-hot rage flooded Britta's senses. She grabbed Brenda, yanking her away from the door.

Suddenly, the door flew open.

Leo, his face streaked with tears and fury, launched himself out. Like a small, cornered animal, he sank his teeth into Brenda's arm.

Brenda let out a piercing, pig-like squeal, shaking her arm violently. Leo was flung against the wall.

Britta saw red.

She checked that Leo was only shaken, not truly hurt. Then she rose to her full height and walked slowly toward Brenda, who was staring at the bite mark on her arm in shocked disbelief.

Britta's voice was quiet, but each word was a shard of glass.

"From this moment on, we are done."

She looked from Brenda to her brother, to Tammy.

"You are not my mother. You are not his grandmother."

Her voice dropped even lower, laced with deadly promise.

"If you ever come near me or my son again, I will call the police and file a restraining order. I will tell them everything. About the money you steal, about the abuse. Everything."

Brenda's face went pale. She knew Britta meant it.

Britta didn't give them another glance. She scooped Leo into her arms, stepped into her apartment, and slammed the door shut. The sound echoed in the hallway.

Outside, in the humiliating silence, Tammy and her husband helped the whimpering Brenda to her feet. They scurried away under the curious eyes of the neighbors.

Inside, Britta held Leo, rocking him gently.

"Mommy, I bit her... I'm sorry..." he sobbed into her shoulder.

Britta kissed the top of his head, her own voice thick with emotion.

"You did nothing wrong, my brave boy. You were protecting me. You protected us."
