Chapter 1

While I looked at the sonogram of our unborn child, my husband—the Don of the Falcone syndicate—handed me a blood-stained business card and ordered me to have an abortion.

He claimed our five-year marriage was a lie, a meticulously crafted pageant designed to keep me compliant while he secretly wed the girl I had rescued from a trafficking ring years ago.

He shoved a wad of cash into my chest, mocking me for being the daughter of the woman who destroyed his family, and told me to get the procedure done so I could return home to cook dinner for his new bride.

When I tried to beg for the man I thought I knew, he laughed, shoved me into the path of his armored SUV, and left me bleeding on the pavement to be collected like refuse.

As I lay in the dirt, my phone buzzed with a message from his top Capo, celebrating the end of the Don's five-year deep-cover performance with the "mistress's daughter."

I stared at the screen, the agony of my physical wounds eclipsed by the realization that my entire existence had been a sadistic game of vengeance.

I needed to know how deep this betrayal went and exactly how much of my body he had already stolen for his sick loyalty tests.

With my mother’s help, I exposed his family’s darkest secrets to the world, and as the sirens wailed, I jumped from the balcony to ensure he would never own me again.

Chapter 1

Sienna POV

While I regarded the spectral, grey image of our child on the sonogram, the morning light sharp across the paper, my husband, the Don of the Falcone family, presented me with a business card stained at its edges with a rust-colored smear.

"Dispose of the bastard before my wife returns," he said, his voice a shard of ice. "Or my men will carve it from you."

My hand instinctively went to the left side of my head—to the scar where my ear used to be. I had given it to him three years ago. I thought it was love. He thought it was a game.

I stood on the sidewalk outside the Falcone Medical Center.

The crisp morning air felt like powdered glass in my lungs.

Lorenzo Enzo Falcone was the Capo dei capi of the entire eastern seaboard.

He was a man who commanded thousands of armed soldiers, a man whose mere name made politicians sweat and rival syndicates bleed.

For five years, he was also the man who kissed my forehead every morning and swore I was the only light in his claustrophobic world.

I looked from the black-and-white image of our unborn child to the dirty piece of cardboard in his hand.

"What... what is this?" My voice was a dry scraping in my throat.

Enzo did not blink.

His dark eyes, usually so warm when they looked at me, were now inert—hollowed-out pits of obsidian.

He reached into the inner pocket of his custom Italian suit.

He pulled out a crisp, official syndicate-sanctioned marriage certificate and held it up to my face.

I saw two names printed in heavy black ink. Lorenzo Falcone and Carmela.

My breath snagged in my chest.

Carmela was the terrified, starving girl I had pulled out of a human trafficking ring in the slums three years ago.

I paid for her education and gave her a safe place to sleep.

Enzo watched my face crumble with the placid indifference of a naturalist observing an insect. "I have just made Carmela my official bride," he stated.

I shook my head, my hands trembling so violently I dropped my purse to the concrete.

"But we are married," I pleaded, a frantic desperation clawing at me. "We took vows before the priest in Sicily."

Enzo loosed a short, grating laugh from deep in his throat.

He stepped closer, his towering frame casting a shadow that fell over me like a shroud.

He leaned down and whispered, "Those vows were a meticulously forged pageant. A means to ensure your compliance—to keep you performing the part of a good little whore."

He used the word whore so casually it felt like a physical blow to my stomach.

I grabbed the sleeve of his jacket, begging him, "Please, Enzo, this has to be some kind of syndicate test."

"Just last night, you were tracing the curve of my belly," I sobbed. "You wept, you whispered names for our child against my skin."

Enzo ripped his arm away from my grip.

He looked at me with a disgust so pure it felt as if my limbs had been filled with lead.

"I would never permit my child to be born a bastard," he spat. "And I would certainly never sire one with the daughter of a filthy mistress."

The words hit me like a volley of shots.

He leaned in closer, his jaw tight with rage.

"I know precisely who your mother is," he hissed. "The whore who bedded my father and instigated the tragedy that left my own mother in a vegetative state for a decade. This is my vendetta."

"Five years of playing the devoted lover," he mocked, "all to hollow you out from the inside."

He swore on his Family honor that he would never truly marry a tainted thing like me.

Enzo reached out and roughly straightened the collar of my coat.

He shoved a thick wad of dirty, crumpled cash into my chest.

"Go to the address on that butcher's card," he ordered.

"Have the procedure done and be back at the penthouse early. Carmela prefers her dinner served hot, and you will be cooking it from now on."

I stared at the man before me, my mind unable to reconcile his features with the cold-blooded stranger inhabiting his skin.

Enzo casually checked his heavy gold watch.

"Oh, and Carmela and I exhausted the supply of condoms in the penthouse last night. You'll need to purchase more on your way back. Do not make my Donna wait."

Bile rose in my throat.

I remembered the grueling sacrifices he supposedly made for me over the last five years—the times he took bullets to protect me from rival families.

It was all a stage play.

I stumbled forward, reaching for him, screaming his name.

Enzo turned his back and got into the driver's seat of his armored SUV.

I ran toward the vehicle, my vision blurred with tears.

The massive black car accelerated without warning.

The heavy metal bumper clipped my hip.

I was thrown backward, my body striking the hard pavement with a dull, meaty thud.

The SUV roared down the street, leaving me lying in the dirt.

My burner phone suddenly buzzed in my coat pocket.

It was an alert from the encrypted syndicate communications channel Enzo had installed on my phone for emergencies.

I pulled it out with shaking, scraped hands.

The screen lit up with a message from his top Capo.

The text read: "The Don has concluded his five-year deep-cover performance with the mistress's daughter. Drinks are on the Family tonight."

I stared at those words until the screen blurred. Somewhere in the distance, a car horn blared. A woman laughed. The world kept spinning as if my universe hadn't just collapsed into ash. And in that moment, I made a silent vow—I would survive this. Not for him. Not for love. So that one day, I could watch him burn.
