He Sold My Mother's Diamonds, Then Bought Them Back for Me Chapter 1

Ava's POV

The night before my mother's death anniversary, I opened her jewelry case for the gala and knew within three seconds that something was wrong.

The navy velvet box still had her initials stitched in silver thread on the lid, *M.L.*, slightly frayed at the L where her thumb used to rest. I'd opened it a hundred times in six years. I knew how the necklace was supposed to feel when I lifted it out.

This one was too light.

I stood at my vanity in the gown she'd helped me choose the spring before she died, midnight silk with a low back, and held the Midnight Star Necklace under the lamp. It should have thrown fire across the mirror. Instead it sat in my palm like something pretty from a department store.

*Hold it to cold light, Ava. Real diamonds fight back.*

I carried it to the white LED panel in the closet and angled the center stone close. No scatter. No bite. Just flat, obedient sparkle.

Glass.

I didn't cry. I took out my mother's handwritten care list from the bottom of the case, the one I'd followed every season since the funeral, and laid every piece on the desk. Necklace, earrings, brooch, bracelet. I checked each tiny engraved number against her list with my ten-power loupe.

Every number matched, and every stone was fake.

Six years ago, standing outside the vault after the funeral, Gabriel had put his hand on my back and said, "Nobody's going to touch these. I promise you that."

The bathroom door opened behind me. Gabriel walked out toweling his hair, saw the loupe in my hand, and slowed down.

"The insurance company wants the originals in secure storage now," he said. "New policy. These are for wearing."

"Then why didn't I get a single notice?"

He crossed the room and reached for the lid of the case.

"They're just stones, Ava. Stop turning this into a funeral all over again."

I moved the box out from under his hand and walked past him.

---

The insurance files lived in the second drawer of his desk in the study. I had it open before he caught up with me.

"What are you doing?"

"Looking for the policy change."

He took my wrist, not hard, but firmly enough that I stopped. It was the first time in our marriage he'd physically put himself between me and something.

"I handle the asset management now. We agreed on that."

"You agreed on that."

"Because you don't understand business risk." He said it gently, like a doctor delivering bad news. "You treat everything like it's sacred. Insurance, storage, valuation, it's my job to make those calls so you don't have to."

I pulled my wrist free. The shredder sat beside the desk, its bin half full, and a strip of thick cream paper hung from the slot where the machine had jammed. I tugged it out.

Half of a consignment form. The letterhead belonged to the auction house my mother had bought from for thirty years. Below it was an item number I knew by heart, because I'd written it in her care list every spring.

*Lot 114. Midnight Star Necklace.*

Consignor: *G&C Heritage Capital.*

"Who is G&C?"

Gabriel didn't answer, and his silence answered for him.

Three months ago he'd come home talking about Celeste and her family's art collection, how he was helping her "turn heritage into a portfolio." Two months ago he'd borrowed the spare key to my safe to update the valuations. Last month a nine-thousand-dollar "audit fee" had cleared our joint account, and he'd laughed when I asked about it.

At the time those had felt like three small things. Now they lined up perfectly.

"C is Celeste," I said.

"Give me that, Ava."

I folded the slip and pushed it into the pocket of my gown. He reached for it, and I stepped back.

He let his hand drop. Something in his face settled, like he'd decided the pretending was costing him more than it was worth.

"Celeste understands what these assets can become," he said. "You only understand what they used to mean."

---

I sat down at my laptop on the other side of the desk and logged into the auction house's collector portal with my own credentials. My mother had set the account up for me when I turned twenty-one.

I typed in the first catalogue number from her list.

*Sold. Diamond drop earrings. Consignor: G&C Heritage Capital.*

The second.

*Sold. Emerald and diamond brooch, circa 1920. Consignor: G&C Heritage Capital.*

The third was the pear-shaped yellow diamond she'd worn to my graduation. Sold eleven weeks ago, same seller.

Gabriel stood by the window with his arms crossed and didn't try to stop me anymore.

His own computer was open on the desk, the screen still lit. A presentation filled it, slick and navy-blue, titled *G&C Heritage Capital: Series A Overview.* I turned it toward me. Directors were listed as Gabriel Moreau and Celeste Duquette. Under *Seed Capital Sources*, there was one line.

*Private estate liquidation.*

My mother's estate. My mother's earrings, sitting in a pitch deck as a funding source.

I clicked through the folder beside it. A loan agreement. Collateral: the townhouse on Rowan Street, the house my mother had placed in the revocable trust I administered, the house we were standing in. At the bottom was an electronic authorization with my signature.

The date stamp read March fourteenth, 2:16 p.m.

I picked up my phone and opened my photo library. March fourteenth, 2:09 p.m. was a photo of fresh white peonies on my mother's headstone, taken forty miles away at Saint Agnes Cemetery.

I turned his laptop to face him.

"I was at her grave," I said. "Seven minutes before I apparently signed this."

Gabriel looked at the screen for maybe a second. He didn't bother with an excuse.

"Your mother is dead. I turned what she left behind into something useful."

Hearing it aloud didn't feel like a slap. It felt like the floor finally becoming solid under me, because now I knew exactly where I stood. This hadn't been one panicked loan or one bad decision. He had planned it for months, piece by piece, and the whole time he'd kept kissing me goodnight.

---

I stopped arguing.

I stood up, walked to the built-in bookcase, and pressed the bottom of the third shelf where the wood didn't quite meet. The panel slid open. My mother had shown me the compartment when I was twelve, and I'd never once mentioned it to my husband.

Inside was her provenance ledger, a worn green leather book with every piece she'd ever owned written in her careful slanted hand. It held stone weights to the hundredth of a carat, cut adjustments, repair marks, and the private numbers she'd had engraved where no catalogue would ever look. It showed the full chain of ownership, and it was the one thing that could prove what was hers, and therefore mine.

Gabriel's eyes went to it. "What is that?"

I slid it into my bag without answering.

Then I lifted my phone and photographed his screen. I captured the pitch deck, the loan agreement, the forged authorization with its time stamp, and the auction records still open on mine. He watched me do it and didn't move. Maybe he thought I wouldn't understand what I was looking at. I let him keep thinking that.

I took Elise Marchetti's card from my wallet, though I knew her number by heart, and called. She'd been my mother's attorney for twenty years.

She picked up on the second ring. "Ava? It's late."

"I need you to revoke Gabriel's power of attorney over my trust and every account tied to it. Tonight, if you can."

There was a short pause. "Understood. Can you tell me why?"

"There's a forged electronic authorization on a loan secured against the Rowan Street house. I want an emergency freeze on the property and the accounts, and I want it filed before anyone can move anything else."

"I'll have papers drafted in an hour. Don't sign anything. Don't send anything to him."

"I won't."

I ended the call. Gabriel had finally uncrossed his arms.

"Ava, you're overreacting. Let's talk about this when you're calm."

"I am calm."

I looked down at my left hand. He'd given me the ring in Lisbon, on a terrace above the river, and told me he'd spend his life protecting what mattered to me.

I twisted it off. It came loose easily, the way things do when they were never really holding on.

He went completely still, and for the first time that night he looked unsure of what I knew.

I didn't tell him. I walked back to my desk and set the ring down on the velvet, right beside the glass Midnight Star, two fakes lying side by side under the lamp.

"You didn't sell my jewelry, Gabriel," I said. "You sold your last right to stand beside me."

Then I picked up my bag, with my mother's ledger heavy inside it, and he didn't say a word as I walked out of the room.
