Chapter 1

I was in the kitchen when the sickening thud echoed through our small house. I froze, the ceramic mug slipping from my fingers and shattering on the hardwood floor. "Mom?" I called out. Silence.

I rushed into the living room and found her crumpled on the rug. Eleanor Murphy, the most revered former Healer of the Silver Pine Pack, was gasping for air, her skin burning with an unnatural, feverish heat. Panic clawed at my throat. As a Late Bloomer—a twenty-three-year-old she-wolf whose inner wolf had yet to awaken—I didn't have access to the pack mind-link. I couldn't just call for help telepathically. I had to physically run out into the street, screaming for the patrol guards.

The pack infirmary was a blur of sterile white lights and the sharp tang of bleach, barely masking the fading scent of my mother's signature medicinal herbs. I paced the waiting room until the head healer finally emerged, his expression grim and his shoulders heavy.

"It's an aggressive, rare blood illness, Isabelle," he said softly, avoiding my eyes. "Our standard medicine isn't working. Her inner wolf is shutting down as we speak. She needs an out-of-network Lycan Healer from the city immediately, or she won't make it through the week."

The cost he quoted next made my knees buckle. It was an astronomical upfront fee. I had spent my entire adult life working odd jobs, saving what little I could, but I didn't have anywhere near that kind of money. But I knew someone who did.

Jacob. My chosen mate of five years, and a high-ranking Delta warrior.

I sprinted back to the house we shared. Jacob was standing by the mirror in the hallway, adjusting the collar of a tailored leather jacket. He smelled like expensive cologne and indifference.

"Jacob," I breathed, tears streaming down my face as I grabbed his arm. "It's my mom. She collapsed. The healers say she needs a Lycan specialist tonight, but the upfront cost is massive. Please, I need your help."

He paused, looking down at my hands clutching his sleeve. Slowly, he peeled my fingers off him, brushing a piece of invisible lint from his jacket. "Isabelle, calm down. You're being hysterical."

"Hysterical? She's dying!"

He sighed, a heavy, exaggerated sound of annoyance. "She's just sick. You're overreacting, as usual. Look, my money is completely tied up in those rogue-border trade investments right now. The market is incredibly volatile. I can't just pull cash out because you're panicking."

"You're a Delta," I sobbed, my voice cracking. "You have emergency funds. Jacob, please, she's all I have."

"I said no, Isabelle," he snapped, his voice dipping into a harsh, commanding tone that made my unawakened spirit cower. "I have to head into the city for a meeting. Stop crying. I'll see you later."

He walked out the door without looking back, leaving me trembling alone in the hallway.

But I couldn't just sit there and let my mother die. Desperation made me reckless. Maybe if I showed him the actual medical documents, he would realize how serious it was. I grabbed the paperwork from the kitchen counter and ran to the train station.

Tracking him wasn't hard. Even without my wolf, my werewolf senses were sharp enough to follow his distinct scent of pine body wash. But as I stepped off the subway in Brooklyn, his scent mixed with a sickeningly sweet, heavy floral note. Skyler Gomez. His "female best friend."

The trail led me to an exclusive, dimly lit alley in a high-end neighborhood. Neon lights buzzed above a sleek, frosted-glass storefront: Lycan Ink. It was a premium werewolf tattoo parlor, known for catering only to the elite.

I pushed the heavy glass door open. The sharp, toxic smell of wolfsbane hit my nose immediately.

"That'll be fifty thousand for the pair," the burly tattoo artist grunted, wiping down his station.

I froze in the doorway. Jacob stood at the front counter. He didn't look like a man whose money was tied up in volatile trades. He looked completely relaxed as he casually tossed thick, banded stacks of hundred-dollar bills onto the glass counter. Fifty thousand dollars in cash.

Beside him stood Skyler. She was wearing a tank top, her shoulder wrapped in clear film. Beneath the plastic, a fresh, intricate crest was etched into her skin. Jacob had the exact same crest bleeding fresh ink on his forearm.

"Matching soulmate crests," Skyler purred, her voice dripping with satisfaction. She leaned her body flush against Jacob, deliberately rubbing her neck over his shoulder, drenching his clothes in her floral scent to assert her dominance. "The wolfsbane ink stings like hell, but it makes them permanent, right, Jay?"

Jacob smiled at her. It was a soft, indulgent smile—the kind he hadn't given me in years. "Only the best for you, Sky. I bought the exclusive copyright to the design, too. No one else will ever have our bond."

Fifty thousand dollars. The exact amount needed to save my dying mother. He had it in cash the whole time, and he spent it on a permanent mark with another woman.

Skyler's eyes flicked to the doorway. She saw me standing there, clutching my mother's crumpled medical bills. A wicked, triumphant smirk spread across her lips. She didn't pull away from Jacob; she pressed closer, her eyes locking onto mine with absolute malice.

In that suffocating, wolfsbane-scented room, something inside me violently tore apart. The chosen mate bond—the invisible, fragile tether I had sacrificed my pride, my time, and my heart to maintain for five agonizing years—snapped. It didn't just break; it shattered, sending a wave of agonizing, soul-deep pain through my chest. I gasped, stumbling backward as the sheer weight of the betrayal dragged me into the dark.
