He Let My Mother Die for His Mistress’s Tattoo
Chapter 2
The concrete curb was freezing, but the chill was nothing compared to the ice spreading through my veins. Behind me, the neon sign of Lycan Ink buzzed, a sickening hum that vibrated against my skull. My chest felt hollowed out, the space where my chosen mate bond used to be now just a jagged, bleeding wound. Five years. I had given Jacob five years of my life, my devotion, my pride. And he had traded it all for a fifty-thousand-dollar wolfsbane tattoo with Skyler.
I pulled my knees to my chest, gasping for air in the dirty Brooklyn alleyway. I wanted to curl up and die right here on the pavement. But I couldn't. The image of my mother, burning with fever and gasping for breath on our living room floor, flashed behind my eyes. I didn't have the luxury of falling apart.
My hands shook violently as I pulled out my cracked phone. Who could I call? The Silver Pine pack elders wouldn't defy Jacob, and none of the Omegas or Deltas had that kind of money. I scrolled through my contacts, my vision blurred with hot tears, until my thumb hovered over a name I hadn't spoken aloud in years.
Julian Carter.
We grew up together. He used to chase away the older kids who teased me for being a Late Bloomer. But he was sent away to train, and now he was the Alpha of the Obsidian Moon Pack—one of the wealthiest, most lethal packs on the East Coast. We were worlds apart now. I was a broken, wolfless nobody, and he was a king.
Swallowing the last shred of my pride, I hit dial. It rang twice before it went to voicemail.
"Julian," I choked out, a sob tearing through my throat. "It's Isabelle. Izzy. I know it's been a long time, but I have nowhere else to go. My mom is dying. I need an emergency loan for a Lycan Healer. I'll do anything to pay you back. Please... please help me."
I dropped the phone onto the pavement and buried my face in my hands, the tears finally overflowing. I was so pathetic. Why would an elite Alpha care about a ghost from his past?
Ten minutes later, the screech of heavy tires tore through the quiet street.
I jerked my head up. A massive, bulletproof black SUV had violently swerved to the curb, parking illegally right in front of the alley. The driver's side door flew open, and a man stepped out into the dim streetlights.
It was Julian.
He was huge—taller and broader than the boy I remembered, his massive frame stretching the fabric of a tailored, charcoal suit. Raw, suffocating power radiated off him in waves, an Alpha aura so dominant it made the air heavy.
But before I could even process his intimidating presence, the wind shifted.
It hit me like a physical blow. The scent of crisp, fresh rain and deep, earthy cedar. It sliced right through the toxic smog of the city and the sickening stench of wolfsbane from the parlor. It was the most intoxicating, perfect smell I had ever experienced.
And then, the impossible happened.
Deep inside my chest, beneath the broken shards of my chosen bond, something sparked. A sudden, violent rush of heat flooded my veins. My bones ached, my senses sharpened to a razor's edge, and a voice—feral, feminine, and fiercely alive—roared in my mind.
Mate!
My inner wolf. After twenty-three years of silence, she was awake. She was thrashing against my ribs, desperate to get to the man standing frozen by the SUV.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks. His chest heaved. I watched as his eyes, normally a deep brown, flashed to a brilliant, glowing amber. He inhaled sharply, his nostrils flaring as my scent hit him. He knew. The Moon Goddess had tied us together.
"Isabelle," he breathed, his voice a low, rumbling growl that sent a shiver of pure electricity down my spine.
He crossed the distance between us in three massive strides. To my absolute shock, the terrifying Alpha of the Obsidian Moon Pack didn't stand over me. He dropped straight to his knees on the filthy concrete, ruining his expensive suit, just to be at eye level with me.
His large, warm hands reached out, hovering for a second before gently cupping my tear-stained face. The moment his skin touched mine, a jolt of pure fire shot through my body. My wolf purred, leaning into his touch.
"Julian," I babbled, my voice cracking under the weight of the mate bond and my utter despair. "My mom... she's dying. The healer says she needs a specialist. It's so much money, Julian. I don't have it. Jacob wouldn't—he bought a tattoo, and I—"
"Shh," Julian interrupted, his thumbs gently wiping the tears from my cheeks. His golden eyes burned with a terrifying, protective fury, but his touch was incredibly tender. "Breathe, little wolf. Give me the hospital's name."
I choked on a sob, handing him the crumpled medical bill.
Julian didn't even look at the astronomical total. He pulled out his phone with one hand, keeping his other hand firmly anchored on my waist, grounding me. He hit a speed dial.
"Marcus," Julian commanded, his Alpha tone making my newly awakened wolf whimper in awe. "Wire the requested funds to the Manhattan Lycan Medical Center immediately. Under Eleanor Murphy's name. Pay the emergency premium, buy out the entire VIP floor, and tell their Chief Healer that if she isn't fully stabilized by morning, I'll burn their clinic to the ground."
He hung up, tossing the phone onto the pavement like it was garbage.
"Done," he murmured softly, his gaze dropping to my trembling lips. "She's safe, Isabelle. You're both safe now."
I stared at him, completely paralyzed. Jacob had let me beg on my knees, hoarding his wealth for a toxic friend. Julian hadn't asked a single question. He hadn't hesitated for a fraction of a second. He just looked at me, recognized my pain, and moved heaven and earth to fix it.
My wolf howled in absolute triumph. I was a Late Bloomer no more. And I was finally, truly, safe.
