He Hid Me, Then Fell for Me Again Chapter 1

I knew something was wrong the second I turned down the third-floor hallway.

Harper, Brooke, and Madison were standing in front of my locker, blocking the metal door as they huddled together and giggled. Brooke held her phone up, the red recording dot already blinking.

When I stopped a few feet away, Harper stepped aside with an exaggerated bow. "Go ahead, Molly. Open it. We left a welcome package for you."

My stomach turned. I reached out, my fingers trembling as I pulled the latch.

The locker door swung open, and a pile of trash spilled out over my sneakers. Used cotton swabs, crumpled tissues stained with makeup, and wads of chewed pink gum stuck directly to my textbooks. Taped right in the middle of my mirror was a neon yellow sticky note that read *DIRTY MOLLY* in thick black marker.

Brooke burst into laughter, zooming her camera in on my face. "God, look at her. The thrift-store sweater really matches the garbage."

"Maybe you should brush your teeth before fourth period," Madison added, pointing at my mouth. "Metal mouth doesn't help the smell."

"Move," I said quietly, trying to reach for my history binder.

Harper slapped my hand away and shoved the binder off the top shelf. It crashed to the floor, papers scattering across the scuffed tiles. "Oops. My hand slipped."

A few people down the hall stopped to watch, snickering. Nobody stepped in. That was just how things worked at Northbridge Academy. If Harper picked a target, everyone else enjoyed the show.

"Put the phone away, Brooke."

The voice cut through the laughter like a blade.

Mason Reed walked past the crowd, his hockey duffel slung over one broad shoulder. His dark hair was still damp from the showers after morning practice. Without breaking stride, he pushed Brooke’s phone down with his forearm until the lens pointed at the floor.

Brooke scowled, lowering the device. "Seriously, Mason? We were just having fun."

"Find something else to do," Mason said, his tone flat and dismissive.

Someone down the hall whistled. "Look at Reed, saving his pathetic neighbor again!"

Mason didn't even look back. "We grew up together. Knock it off and get to class."

Harper rolled her eyes and signaled to the other two. "Whatever. Let's go before we catch whatever disease she has."

They strutted off toward the gym, leaving me alone in front of the mess. Mason didn't stay either. He gave me a quick, unreadable look before disappearing down the corridor.

Ten minutes later, after I shoved the ruined papers into my backpack and dumped the trash, my phone buzzed in my pocket.

*East stairwell. Now.*

I slipped through the heavy metal fire door into the empty stairwell. Mason was waiting on the landing below, leaning against the concrete wall with his arms crossed.

As soon as the door clicked shut behind me, the cold indifference vanished from his face. He walked up the steps, reached out, and gently pulled me against his chest.

"You okay?" he murmured, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.

"I hate them," I whispered into his shirt, breathing in the familiar scent of his cedar body wash. "I hate every single day here."

"I know," he said softly, pressing a kiss to my temple. "Just ignore them, Molly. Harper's miserable. Don't give her the satisfaction."

I pulled back slightly to look at him. "Why do we have to keep hiding this? If people knew we were together, they’d back off. Harper wouldn't dare touch me."

We had been secretly dating for six months. Six months of quiet nights on my porch, whispered conversations in his car, and pretending we were strangers in the hallway.

Mason's jaw tightened. "We talked about this. The D1 scouts are coming to every game this month. If the team starts getting distracted by drama and gossip, it screws up my season. Coach already told me to keep my head down."

"It’s not gossip," I said, my voice cracking. "It’s us."

"And as soon as the season ends, I'll tell everyone," he promised, taking my hands in his. "I swear. Just hold on a little longer. Okay?"

I looked into his eyes and nodded. I always nodded.

Two days later, Chloe Bennett transferred to Northbridge.

She sat next to me in AP Biology because it was the only empty seat left in the lab. When the teacher assigned a partner project, Chloe didn't hesitate. She slid her stool over, introduced herself with a bright smile, and asked what topics I liked.

At lunch, she carried her tray straight to my isolated table in the back corner.

Harper had tried to intervene by third period. I watched from down the hall as Harper intercepted Chloe near the water fountain, leaning in with that sweet, toxic smile to warn her away from "the school freak."

Chloe hadn't backed down. She told Harper she could choose her own friends, turned her back, and walked straight over to me.

For the first time in three years, I felt like I had a real friend. We studied together in the library, traded playlists, and laughed over awful cafeteria pizza.

But Northbridge had a way of crushing anything good.

Within two weeks, the whispers started targeting Chloe. She was kicked out of the junior class group chat for the upcoming weekend party. Someone spray-painted "Molly 2.0" on the back of the gym bleachers. Every time Chloe walked into a classroom, Harper’s circle stopped talking and stared at her with open disgust.

I noticed the shift immediately. Chloe stopped texting me back right away. In class, she started leaving an extra inch of space between our desks. The bright, confident girl who had walked into Northbridge was shrinking under the weight of the social exile.

She was terrified. And I knew exactly what that terror felt like.

The breaking point came on a rainy Friday in the crowded cafeteria.

I was carrying a bowl of hot pumpkin soup back toward my table when Harper stepped backward out of the line, intentionally slamming her shoulder into mine.

The plastic tray flipped. The bowl shattered on the floor, and scalding orange soup splashed across the front of my sweater and soaked into my jeans.

The entire cafeteria fell silent for half a second before erupting into laughter.

"Watch where you're going, Hart," Harper sneered, folding her arms. "Look at the mess you made. Get on your knees and clean it up."

The burn stung against my skin, but the humiliation burned hotter. I wiped a splatter off my sleeve, trying to keep my hands from shaking.

Then I saw Chloe walking through the crowd.

Relief hit me like a breath of fresh air. Chloe would speak up. She knew how cruel Harper was.

"Chloe," I said, taking a step toward her. "Can you—"

Chloe stopped two feet away. Her face was pale, her jaw clenched, and her eyes were darting around the circle of cheering students. She looked at Harper, then down at the orange puddle at my feet.

"You need to clean it," Chloe said.

Her voice wasn't gentle. It was cold, loud, and steady.

I froze. "What?"

Harper laughed, clearly delighted by the sudden turn. "You heard her, Molly. Clean it up. In fact, maybe you should just lick it off the floor. Show everyone what you're good for."

"Chloe, please," I whispered, staring at my only friend.

Instead of answering, Chloe stepped forward. Her hand shot out, grabbing the back of my head, and she shoved me downward with sudden force.

My knees hit the hard tile, plunging directly into the pool of warm soup.

"Just do it," Chloe hissed in my ear, her grip tightening on my hair as she pushed my face inches from the filthy ground. "If you're the only one getting bullied, then it's only your problem. Don't drag me down with you."

The crowd went wild, cheering and stomping their feet against the cafeteria floor.

Tears blurred my vision as the soup seeped through the knees of my pants. I pushed against the floor, struggling to breathe through the shock.

The double doors of the cafeteria banged open.

Mason walked in.

He took in the scene—the crowd, the soup on the floor, and me on my knees with Chloe standing over me.

*He's here,* I thought desperately. *He won't let this happen.*

Mason walked straight toward the circle. The students parted for him automatically, giving the star athlete room to move.

He reached the puddle, stepped over the mess on the floor, and walked right past me.

He didn't even look down.

Mason reached out and took Chloe’s hand, lacing his fingers through hers.

He turned toward the cafeteria, his voice carrying clearly over the noise. "Everyone shut up for a second. Chloe and I are dating. So back off."

The room paused for a fraction of a second before exploding into cheers and wolf-whistles. Brooke was already clapping, and Harper’s face split into a wide, triumphant grin.

I stayed on the floor, my hands submerged in cold, greasy pumpkin soup.

Just last night, Mason had held me on my front porch in the dark, kissing me until my lips were bruised, promising me that everything would change once the season ended.

Harper stepped closer, looking down at me with pure venom. "Well, Molly? As a mutual friend to both of them, aren't you going to say congratulations?"

I slowly lifted my head.

Chloe wouldn't meet my eyes. She stood close to Mason, leaning against his side as if she had always belonged there.

Mason finally looked down at me. There was no regret in his gaze. Only irritation.

"Don't make this weird," he said quietly.

The noise of the cafeteria faded into a dull, hollow ring. I wiped my wet hands on my ruined pants and pushed myself up to stand.

"Congratulations," I said.
