Chapter 4

"You are nine weeks along, Mrs. Vale," Dr. Miller had told me this morning, handing me the glossy printout. "Strong heartbeat."

Those words gave me a concrete deadline. I sat at my home office desk, staring at the black-and-white image of the tiny life growing inside me. I placed the ultrasound photo into a crisp white envelope and sealed the flap. I refused to let my child be born into a house where a mother's title could be temporarily borrowed by a guest.

I planned to hand Adrian this envelope at our scheduled dinner tonight and ask him one single question: When is Bella moving out?

If he asked me to yield again, I would not use this pregnancy to save our marriage.

My phone vibrated against the mahogany wood. Adrian's name flashed across the screen.

"I need to cancel our dinner reservation," Adrian said the second I answered.

"We booked that table three weeks ago," I told him, tapping my fingernail against the white envelope. "I have something important to tell you before the gala begins."

"Bella saw a few photographers outside the training facility and hyperventilated," he rushed out, his voice tight with stress. "I am sitting with her while the medical staff finishes her evaluation. You will have to handle the pre-gala family arrangements yourself."

"I need you here, Adrian."

"Do not turn everything into a competition with Bella, Nora," he snapped. "She cannot even breathe right now."

I did not explain what I was competing for. I dragged my thumb across the smooth paper on my desk. "When is my wedding ring coming back?"

"After the gala ends," he replied, his tone thick with exhaustion. "I will get it from her myself. We can talk alone when this night is over. Just handle the seating chart."

The line went dead.

I did not cancel my attendance. I logged into the gala portal, deleted Bella's name from Table One, and typed my own name back into the seat on Adrian's right. I saved the file and closed the laptop.

I walked to my closet and pulled out a structured navy gown. I slid the white envelope into the hidden silk pocket sewn into the lining. I would give him one last chance to do the right thing.

At five o'clock, a notification popped up on my tablet. The club's public relations team had distributed the final, locked seating chart.

Table One, Seat 1A: Adrian Vale.

Table One, Seat 1B: Bella, Personal Guest.

Table Nine: Nora Vale, Foundation Liaison.

I grabbed my phone and dialed his number. He answered on the fourth ring. Loud music and cheering echoed in the background.

"Fix the seating chart right now," I demanded, pacing the length of the bedroom.

"Nora, I am standing in the middle of a locker room celebration," Adrian shouted over the thumping bass. "Do not do this right now."

"You let the public relations team list Bella as your personal guest at the head table. You put your wife in the third row."

"The PR team handles the optics," he argued. "The team just clinched a playoff berth. Everyone is drinking champagne and taking photos. I am not starting a war with the front office over a chair."

"It is not a chair," I told him, my grip tightening on the phone. "It is my place in our marriage."

"Why can't you be a little more mature about this?" he groaned. "It is just a dinner service. Bella needs the support tonight after the panic attack. You are strong enough to sit at the foundation table for two hours."

"I have spent four years avoiding negative press for you," I said, keeping my voice dangerously low. "I smiled for the cameras when they asked about the youth contract scandal. I organized this entire gala. I am not stepping aside so she can play your partner."

"I am not having this argument while my team is celebrating."

"If you do not correct that list before I walk into the ballroom tonight," I warned him, "I will take your choice as your final answer."

"I am not changing the list, Nora."

I ended the call.

I walked downstairs to the foyer, my bare feet silent on the runner rug. A crumpled pharmacy bag sat on the entryway bench. Bella had left it behind.

I picked it up to hand to the staff. A folded piece of paper stuck out from the top. I pulled it free.

It was a treatment summary dated eleven months earlier, documenting weekly therapy at Oakwood Clinic. The problem was the letterhead. I recognized the address in bold blue ink because I had approved a foundation delivery there last week. Oakwood had moved to that building only two weeks ago. A document supposedly issued eleven months earlier could not have carried that address.

I pulled out my phone, snapped a clear picture of the document, and shoved the paper back into the bag.

"Take this up to the guest suite," I instructed the butler, handing him the plastic sack.

I did not care about her fake medical records right now. I only cared if Adrian would defend our marriage tonight.

I slid into the backseat of the town car. The driver pulled away from the estate, heading toward the downtown venue.

My phone vibrated in my clutch just as we pulled up to the red carpet.

A text message from Adrian appeared on the screen.

Bella is in a really bad state tonight. Please do not make her feel unwelcome.

I stared at the words. I reached into the hidden pocket of my gown and opened the white envelope. The ultrasound image slid into my palm, a tiny gray curve beneath the printed line showing a strong heartbeat. I could not destroy that. The photograph belonged to my child, not to this marriage.

I tucked the scan safely into my clutch. Then I pulled out the note I had written for Adrian that morning: We are going to be parents.

I tore the note and the empty envelope in half, rolled down the tinted window, and dropped the paper pieces into the curbside trash bin before I stepped onto the red carpet.
