Chapter 5

The crystal chandelier threw hard white light across Table One.

Bella sat in the chair marked Captain's Family.

My chair.

She wore a champagne silk gown from the club's winter campaign, and my wedding ring still flashed on her right hand every time she lifted her glass.

Adrian sat beside her, laughing with the head coach as if the seating chart had not cost him a marriage ultimatum three hours earlier.

I stopped behind Bella's chair.

"Stand up."

Her champagne flute clicked against the saucer. "Nora?"

"You are in my seat."

Conversation at the nearest tables thinned. A few heads turned. Two reporters near the sponsor wall lifted their phones.

Adrian was on his feet before Bella could move. He caught my elbow and pulled me half a step away from the table.

"Lower your voice."

I looked at his hand until he released me.

"I gave you until tonight to correct this."

"And I told you the seating was locked." His smile stayed fixed for the cameras, but his voice sharpened. "Sit at Table Nine. We can deal with this at home."

"No."

Bella rose halfway, pressing a hand to her chest. "I can move. I don't want this to become a problem."

"Sit down," Adrian told her at once.

The command landed harder than if he had shouted at me.

He had made his choice in public this time.

A heavy palm struck the table. Mr. Gallagher, one of the club's biggest sponsors, swayed beside his chair with a whiskey glass in hand.

"Leave the poor girl alone," he said, pointing at Bella. "Everyone knows she had a rough year. Vale's trying to keep her steady. Don't turn a charity night into some jealous-wife spectacle."

A few people looked away in embarrassment.

Adrian did not correct him.

That was the moment everything inside me went still.

"Tell him," I said.

Adrian's jaw tightened. "Nora."

"Tell your sponsor whose foundation planned this gala. Tell him who negotiated his three-year beverage contract. Tell him why Bella is wearing the Vale family ring."

Gallagher blinked, finally glancing at my bare left hand.

Bella curled her fingers into her palm.

Adrian stepped closer. "Not here."

"Exactly here. You had no problem humiliating me here."

The nearest reporter's phone was pointed straight at us now.

Adrian noticed. His expression changed instantly from anger to damage control.

"Please sit down for two hours," he said through his teeth. "You are stronger than this."

There it was again.

Strong enough to lose the dress.

Strong enough to lose the ring.

Strong enough to lose the seat.

Strong enough to be erased without causing trouble.

I looked at Bella. "Give me my ring."

Her face paled. "Adrian said I could keep it through the press cycle."

"I did not ask what Adrian said."

She looked at him instead of me.

Adrian exhaled and rubbed a hand over his face. "Nora, not now."

A laugh escaped me, quiet enough that only he heard it.

"You are right. Not now."

I reached into my clutch and pulled out the folded seating chart I had printed before leaving the house. My name sat at Table Nine under Foundation Liaison.

I laid it in front of him.

Then I removed my foundation access badge and placed that beside it.

"What are you doing?" he asked.

"Making the chart accurate."

His eyes narrowed.

"You wanted a liaison instead of a wife. You can have one neither. Effective tonight, I resign from the Adrian Vale Foundation."

The head coach went silent. Gallagher lowered his drink.

Adrian's face lost color. "Do not make a career decision because you are angry."

"My career?" I asked. "My name isn't even on the foundation."

He had no answer.

The event coordinator hurried toward us with a headset pressed to one ear. "Nora, the scholarship family is waiting backstage. The video package is two minutes short, and the auction host needs the revised donor total."

Adrian looked at her as if he had forgotten the gala still required someone to run it.

I opened my clutch, handed her the final cue sheet, and pointed to the handwritten figure at the bottom. "The sponsor match cleared at six-forty. Use that number. Move the scholarship speech ahead of the auction video, and you will cover the two-minute gap."

"Got it." She squeezed my hand once. "Thank you."

I had solved the problem in less than thirty seconds. No title. No seat. No name on the screen. Still doing the work.

I turned and walked away from Table One.

"Nora." Adrian followed me between the tables. "Stop. We will talk after dinner."

I kept moving.

He caught up near the ballroom doors. "Where are you going?"

"Home."

"Good. Cool off. I'll be there after the sponsor photographs."

I looked at him for a long moment.

Even now, he thought I was waiting for him to finish the night.

"I won't be there."

His expression finally cracked. "What does that mean?"

"It means you should enjoy your family table."

I stepped through the doors before he could answer.

By the time Adrian's car would have left the gala, I was back at the house with a suitcase open on the bed.

I packed clothes, my passport, personal financial records, and every original charity proposal that carried my revision history. In the study, I disconnected the smart-home security hub from the wall. Its local drive contained years of access logs and copies of my foundation files. I did not know yet that I would need the security cache. I only knew I would not leave my work behind for someone else to rewrite.

The empty wedding-ring box still sat on Adrian's pillow.

I closed the lid and left it there.

My phone rang twice while I packed. Adrian. Then again.

I let both calls go unanswered.

At the front door, I stopped with one hand on my suitcase and the other resting over my lower stomach.

Nine weeks.

A strong heartbeat.

I had spent all day wondering how to tell Adrian we were going to be parents.

Now I knew the first promise I needed to make was not to him.

"You will never have to beg for your place in a family," I whispered to my child.

I walked outside, locked the door behind me, and called a divorce attorney from the back seat of the waiting car.
