Chapter 2

I didn't confront him right away. Screaming in a hospital hallway wouldn't change the fact that Arthur chose her life over mine. I needed facts.

I hired a private investigator the morning I got home.

"Elaine Monroe," the investigator said through the phone speaker. "She's an art investor. Just moved back from Paris a month ago."

"And my husband?" I asked, staring at my bruised reflection in the hallway mirror.

"They've met seven times in the last three weeks. Mostly dinners. A few afternoon coffees near his office. She attends high-profile gallery openings, and Arthur is always her plus-one."

"Are you sure?"

"I sent the photos to your email. See for yourself."

I opened my laptop. The screen lit up with images. Arthur holding Elaine's coat. Arthur pulling out her chair. Arthur smiling at her in a way he hadn't smiled at me in a year.

I ended the call. The front door unlocked, and Arthur walked in carrying a brown paper bag. He smelled like expensive cologne and guilt.

"I brought your favorite," he said, setting the bag on the kitchen island. "Pad Thai from that place on 5th."

"Who is Elaine, Arthur?"

He stopped unpacking the cartons. He didn't look surprised. He walked around the island and reached for my hands. I pulled them back.

"Zoe, look at me," he said softly. "She's just an old friend."

"Old friends don't text you saying they finally made it back to you."

Arthur sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "She meant she made it back to the States. You're just sensitive after the crash. Your body is healing, and your mind is jumping to the worst possible conclusions."

"Seven dinners in three weeks."

"I was helping her navigate the local art market for her investments. She's been out of the country for a decade. She doesn't know anyone here."

"She knows you."

"Zoe, stop this." He stepped closer, his voice dropping into that gentle, reassuring register he used when I stressed over firm deadlines. "There is nothing between us. I love you."

I wanted to scream. I wanted to throw the food at him. But my ribs ached, and my spirit felt shattered. I nodded slowly, letting him pull me into a careful hug. I let myself believe the lie because the truth hurt too much to face.

Three days later, reality shattered the illusion.

A major client demanded the revised gala sketches immediately. The physical drafts were at Arthur's suite at the Grand Hotel. He kept the room for late nights when the firm ran overtime.

I drove there at midnight. My chest still throbbed with every breath, but I needed those designs.

I swiped my spare keycard. The lock clicked.

I pushed the heavy oak door open.

"Arthur, I need the—"

I froze in the entryway.

Arthur walked out of the bedroom. He wore no shirt. His belt hung loose, the buckle clinking against the doorframe.

He stopped dead. "Zoe. What are you doing here?"

Before I could form a word, a shadow moved behind him. Elaine stepped into the light. She wore Arthur's white button-down shirt. The hem barely reached her mid-thigh. Her blonde hair was a messy tangle.

"Zoe," Elaine said, her voice laced with mock sweetness. A victorious smirk played on her lips. "Don't you already know who I am?"

My stomach turned. "Take my husband's shirt off."

Elaine adjusted the collar, pulling it down slightly to expose her collarbone. "He gave it to me. I was cold."

"Arthur," I snapped. "Tell her to take it off."

Arthur shifted instantly, stepping in front of Elaine to block my view of her.

"Zoe, back away," Arthur ordered, raising a hand. "She just survived a crash. Don't agitate her."

I stared at him. The man I built a business with. The man I married. He stood half-naked, shielding his mistress from his wife.

"Agitate her?" I asked, my voice trembling.

"Her nerves are completely shot," Arthur said, his tone sharp. "She's dealing with severe trauma from the accident."

"I was in the same accident!" I yelled. "I have three broken ribs!"

Arthur frowned. "You're stronger than she is. You always have been. You don't need to come in here and act like a maniac."

I let out a harsh, bitter laugh. It scraped against my bruised chest. "So now, even my questioning you counts as agitating her?"

"Just go home," Arthur said. "We will talk about this tomorrow when you've calmed down."

"I am perfectly calm."

"You're acting crazy. You barged in here—"

"Into a room paid for by my company," I interrupted. "To get the work you neglected."

"The drafts are on the desk." He pointed toward the living area without moving an inch away from Elaine.

I marched past them. Elaine didn't step back. She held her ground, her shoulder brushing against mine as I squeezed past. I grabbed the leather folder off the mahogany desk and shoved it into my open tote bag.

I turned back to face them.

"Don't bother coming back to the house," I told him.

Arthur crossed his arms. "You're being unreasonable."

"And you're a coward."

I walked out, slamming the suite door hard enough to rattle the hallway fixtures.

I sat in my car in the parking garage. My hands shook so violently I couldn't insert the key into the ignition.

I reached into my tote bag to find my phone. My fingers brushed against something hard and cold.

I pulled it out and turned on the dome light.

A diamond teardrop earring rested on my palm.

I didn't own anything like this. Elaine had been wearing them when she stepped out of the bedroom. She must have dropped it into my open bag when I brushed past her.

I held the jewelry up to the streetlamp outside the garage. It caught the light, sparkling with a cruel brilliance. A taunt. A physical reminder that she had won. She wanted me to know she could invade my space, my bag, my marriage, and leave her mark wherever she pleased.

I tossed the earring into the cup holder, started the engine, and sped out of the garage.

The pounding on my front door started at seven the next morning.

I dragged myself off the couch, still wearing my clothes from the night before. I pulled the door open.

Two uniformed police officers stood on my porch.

"Zoe Pierce?" the taller officer asked, his hand resting near his radio.

"Yes. Can I help you?"

"Ma'am, we need you to step outside. You're coming with us."

I grabbed the doorframe. "For what? What is this about?"

"We received a 911 call from an Elaine Monroe. She claims you broke into her hotel room late last night and physically assaulted her."

"Assaulted her?" I repeated, my voice rising in disbelief. "I went to my husband's hotel room to get work documents. I didn't touch her!"

"Ms. Monroe has visible bruising on her arms and a cut on her cheek," the second officer stated.

"She was in a car crash!" I shouted. "We both were! Any bruises she has are from the accident."

"She claims you shoved her into a wall and threatened her life."

"That is a lie!"

"She also stated you stole a piece of her jewelry during the altercation."

My blood ran cold. The earring.

"I didn't steal anything. She planted it in my bag!"

"So you admit you have her property?" the taller officer asked, pulling handcuffs from his belt.

"No! You don't understand. My husband was right there. He saw the whole thing. Ask him!"

"We did ask him, Mrs. Pierce," the officer said, his voice completely devoid of sympathy. "Your husband is the one who corroborated her story. He provided the official witness statement against you."

The story begins among the vine rows of the San Lorenzo Estate in the Guadalupe Valley. To Hanna Román, this land isn't about money; it's the living memory of her father, the man who taught her that every grape holds the secret of time. However, since his death, Hanna's world has been falling apart. Her mother, Doña Elena-a woman whose entire identity is tied to her last name and her jewelry box-has squandered the family fortune in a desperate attempt to keep up appearances among Mexico's elite. Debt is closing in, and the banks are threatening to seize the hacienda. This is when Elena plays her final card: her daughter. Hanna is young, beautiful, and possesses a purity that stands in stark contrast to the decay of high society, making her the family's most valuable asset. Elena reaches out to the Montes family, a lineage of financial sharks, and proposes a deal that feels like it belongs in another century: a marriage alliance in exchange for wiping out the Román family's debts. The Clash of Two Worlds Sergio Montes doesn't believe in fate, only in statistics. As the CEO of Montes Holdings, his life is a whirlwind of private jets and board meetings in Mexico City skyscrapers. He is strikingly handsome but glacially cold. He accepts the deal not for love or even desire, but out of strategic necessity: his grandfather, the patriarch of the empire, has given him an ultimatum to inherit the presidency of the company-he must "settle down" and project a solid family image. Their first meeting at a luxury restaurant in Mexico City is a total train wreck. Hanna arrives with the dust of the hacienda still in her soul and her pride wounded; Sergio arrives with a legal contract in hand. He looks at her as just another acquisition-a beautiful but silent asset. She looks at her as the executioner of her freedom. The Paper Pact The contract is signed with clear clauses: A two-year public marriage. Living together in Sergio's penthouse in Mexico City. Hanna receives the funds to modernize San Lorenzo but cannot return to live there until the contract expires. Any real emotional involvement is strictly forbidden. The beginning of their life together is a cold war. Hanna feels suffocated by the city and Sergio's controlling nature. He, in turn, is caught off guard by her resistance. Hanna isn't the "trophy wife" he expected; she secretly studies agronomy, reads up on commercial law, and questions his every move. Cracks in the Armor The turning point comes when Sergio is forced to visit the San Lorenzo Estate for an audit. Away from his concrete jungle, he sees a different Hanna: passionate, a leader, and deeply connected to the land. For the first time, the arrogant CEO feels a crack in his armor. The physical attraction that was always humming beneath the surface like an electric current finally explodes during a storm at the hacienda, where the contract stops being about paper and starts being about skin. However, Hanna's mother, Elena, isn't done with her schemes. Seeing Sergio start to soften, she fears losing her grip on the money and begins leaking information to the press to sabotage the relationship-leading Hanna to believe that Sergio is planning to sell the hacienda behind her back to build a hotel complex. Climax and Redemption The perceived betrayal breaks Hanna. She flees the city and retreats to the vineyards, ready to lose everything rather than stay with a man who thinks everything has a price. Sergio, faced for the first time with something he can't buy with a check, has to choose between his empire and the woman who taught him how to feel. The end of the story isn't just about saving the San Lorenzo Estate; it's about the transformation of them both. Sergio has to swallow his pride to ask for forgiveness, and Hanna has to learn that love-even when it starts as a transaction-can be the only absolute truth in a world of appearances.
