Chapter 3

"You corroborated her lie."

Arthur stood by the precinct exit, adjusting his cuffs. "I told the officers the truth. You broke in. You were hostile."

"She planted that earring in my bag."

"Elaine doesn't play games like that."

"But I do?" I asked.

"You're acting out of jealousy."

"I'm acting like a wife whose husband is protecting another woman."

"She was terrified, Zoe. You shoved past her."

"I walked past her to get my own company's files!"

"She has a cut on her cheek."

"From the car crash!" I yelled. "The crash where you gave away my blood to save her!"

An officer at the front desk cleared his throat loudly.

Arthur lowered his voice. "Keep it together. I posted your bail. The lawyers will handle the theft charge."

"I didn't steal anything."

"Just go home. I have to get back to the hotel. Elaine is extremely shaken up by your stunt."

"You're leaving with her?"

"She needs me right now."

He walked out, leaving me standing next to a vending machine.

The corporate rumors ignited overnight.

I sat at the head of the conference table. My ribs still ached, but I refused to show weakness.

"The press is asking questions about the police visit," David, our marketing director, said. "They want to know why the co-founder's wife was detained."

"No comment," I replied.

"Arthur isn't here to present a united front," David pressed. "He called in a personal day."

"I am here. That is enough."

"The investors are getting nervous. We need Arthur to make a statement."

"Arthur is unavailable," I snapped.

"He's with that art investor, isn't he? Elaine Monroe."

I glared at David. "We focus on the upcoming gala. Nothing else."

"Zoe, you can't sweep an arrest under the rug."

"Watch me."

A sharp, twisting cramp ripped through my lower back.

I gripped the edge of the mahogany table. My knuckles turned white.

"Zoe?" David asked, his tone shifting from accusatory to concerned.

The pain flared again. Hot. Blinding.

Wetness soaked through my skirt.

I looked down. Crimson blood stained the cream leather of my chair.

"Call an ambulance!" someone yelled.

"Don't," I gasped, trying to stand.

My legs gave out.

The boardroom spun. The fluorescent lights blurred into a solid white line.

"Mrs. Pierce."

I opened my eyes. The sterile smell of iodine filled my nose.

A doctor stood at the foot of my bed.

"What happened?" I asked. My voice cracked.

"You suffered a severe hemorrhage." He stepped closer. "Did you know you were pregnant?"

The monitor beeped a steady, hollow rhythm.

"Pregnant?" I whispered.

"Six weeks."

My hands drifted to my stomach. It felt completely empty.

"The trauma from the car accident, combined with extreme physical and emotional stress... your body couldn't sustain the pregnancy."

"Are you saying..."

"I'm so sorry, Mrs. Pierce. The fetus is gone."

He handed me a single sheet of paper.

"Is there anything else we can do?" I asked, my voice barely audible.

"Rest. That is all you can do now."

The doctor left the room, closing the door softly behind him.

I stared at the black ink on the white page.

*Miscarriage.*

My vision blurred. A tear slipped down my cheek, splashing onto the printed words.

I was going to be a mother.

We were going to have a family.

The door swung open.

Arthur walked in. He wore a fresh suit. No tie.

He didn't look at the monitor. He didn't look at the tear-stained paper in my lap.

"Elaine said she didn't mean it, why can't you be more understanding of her?" Arthur said.

My fingers crushed the edges of the medical certificate.

"What did you just say?"

"She feels terrible about the police calling you out like that. She was just scared." He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "You didn't have to collapse in the middle of a board meeting to make a point."

I threw the crumpled paper at his chest.

It bounced off his lapel and landed on the linoleum.

"Read it."

Arthur frowned. "What is this?"

"Read it, Arthur."

He stooped down and picked up the paper.

His eyes scanned the lines. The color drained from his face.

"Zoe... this..."

"Arthur, I lost our child, and all you care about is her feeling wronged."

"A baby?" His voice shook. "You were pregnant?"

"I was pregnant. And now I'm not."

He stepped toward the bed, reaching out. "Zoe, I didn't know."

"You didn't care to know. You were too busy comforting the woman who framed me."

"I thought you were just stressed. I thought..."

His fingers brushed my wrist.

I shoved his hand away with all my strength. "Don't touch me!"

Arthur stumbled back, his eyes wide.

"We can get through this," he pleaded. "We can try again."

"There is no 'we'."

"Don't say that. We are married."

"Not anymore."

Footsteps sounded in the corridor.

Elaine appeared in the doorway, clutching a massive bouquet of white lilies.

She wore a perfectly pressed designer dress. Not a single bruise visible on her face.

"Arthur?" she murmured, stepping into the room.

She looked at me, then at the paper in Arthur's hand. Her eyes welled with tears instantly.

"Zoe, I'm so sorry," Elaine cried, her voice trembling. "If it weren't for me, your baby wouldn't have..."

She buried her face in Arthur's shoulder.

Arthur wrapped an arm around her waist. He actually held her.

"Shh, El, it's not your fault," Arthur whispered to her.

I watched them. The rage that had been boiling inside me suddenly evaporated.

A cold, absolute clarity took its place.

"From today on, I am stepping out of your world."

Arthur froze. "What?"

"I am done. With this marriage. With you."

"You're grieving," Arthur said. "You don't mean that."

"I have never meant anything more." I pointed toward the door. "Get out."

"Zoe, please," Elaine whimpered. "Don't push him away because of me."

"Get out of my room."

Elaine peeked over Arthur's shoulder. A tiny, triumphant smile flashed across her lips before she hid her face again.

"We'll talk when you're rational," Arthur said.

He guided Elaine out of the room, leaving the white lilies resting on the visitor's chair.

I sat alone in the quiet room. My phone buzzed on the bedside table.

I grabbed it. Another message from an unknown number.

*You made the right choice. But Arthur's shares in the company belong to her now. Check your email.*

I opened my inbox.

A legal transfer document sat at the top of my screen. Arthur had signed away his fifty percent of Pierce Design.

To Elaine Monroe.

The story begins among the vine rows of the San Lorenzo Estate in the Guadalupe Valley. To Hanna Román, this land isn't about money; it's the living memory of her father, the man who taught her that every grape holds the secret of time. However, since his death, Hanna's world has been falling apart. Her mother, Doña Elena-a woman whose entire identity is tied to her last name and her jewelry box-has squandered the family fortune in a desperate attempt to keep up appearances among Mexico's elite. Debt is closing in, and the banks are threatening to seize the hacienda. This is when Elena plays her final card: her daughter. Hanna is young, beautiful, and possesses a purity that stands in stark contrast to the decay of high society, making her the family's most valuable asset. Elena reaches out to the Montes family, a lineage of financial sharks, and proposes a deal that feels like it belongs in another century: a marriage alliance in exchange for wiping out the Román family's debts. The Clash of Two Worlds Sergio Montes doesn't believe in fate, only in statistics. As the CEO of Montes Holdings, his life is a whirlwind of private jets and board meetings in Mexico City skyscrapers. He is strikingly handsome but glacially cold. He accepts the deal not for love or even desire, but out of strategic necessity: his grandfather, the patriarch of the empire, has given him an ultimatum to inherit the presidency of the company-he must "settle down" and project a solid family image. Their first meeting at a luxury restaurant in Mexico City is a total train wreck. Hanna arrives with the dust of the hacienda still in her soul and her pride wounded; Sergio arrives with a legal contract in hand. He looks at her as just another acquisition-a beautiful but silent asset. She looks at her as the executioner of her freedom. The Paper Pact The contract is signed with clear clauses: A two-year public marriage. Living together in Sergio's penthouse in Mexico City. Hanna receives the funds to modernize San Lorenzo but cannot return to live there until the contract expires. Any real emotional involvement is strictly forbidden. The beginning of their life together is a cold war. Hanna feels suffocated by the city and Sergio's controlling nature. He, in turn, is caught off guard by her resistance. Hanna isn't the "trophy wife" he expected; she secretly studies agronomy, reads up on commercial law, and questions his every move. Cracks in the Armor The turning point comes when Sergio is forced to visit the San Lorenzo Estate for an audit. Away from his concrete jungle, he sees a different Hanna: passionate, a leader, and deeply connected to the land. For the first time, the arrogant CEO feels a crack in his armor. The physical attraction that was always humming beneath the surface like an electric current finally explodes during a storm at the hacienda, where the contract stops being about paper and starts being about skin. However, Hanna's mother, Elena, isn't done with her schemes. Seeing Sergio start to soften, she fears losing her grip on the money and begins leaking information to the press to sabotage the relationship-leading Hanna to believe that Sergio is planning to sell the hacienda behind her back to build a hotel complex. Climax and Redemption The perceived betrayal breaks Hanna. She flees the city and retreats to the vineyards, ready to lose everything rather than stay with a man who thinks everything has a price. Sergio, faced for the first time with something he can't buy with a check, has to choose between his empire and the woman who taught him how to feel. The end of the story isn't just about saving the San Lorenzo Estate; it's about the transformation of them both. Sergio has to swallow his pride to ask for forgiveness, and Hanna has to learn that love-even when it starts as a transaction-can be the only absolute truth in a world of appearances.

7.4
I never expected to be branded a 'fake heiress' and a 'scheming bitch' on my own wedding anniversary. "Did you really think we'd never find out you faked the DNA test?" My mother's voice cut like a blade. "You've been impersonating our real daughter all along." The irony was suffocating. They were the ones who stormed into my peaceful life, insisting that I was their long-lost child-no proof needed. And now they dared to call me the fraud. "Since Camille has finally returned to where she belongs," my father declared coldly, "it's time for you to crawl back into whatever shadow you came from." Then came the final blow. My husband of five years didn't even hesitate. "I'll have the divorce papers drawn up immediately. Don't make this difficult, Mirena. You were never meant to be my wife." Overnight, I was discarded. The scandal of the city. The woman who stole a life that was never hers. But they forgot one thing: I never needed them. Before I was George Ashton's wife, I was Mirena Sterling-the Investment Queen. The woman who broke Wall Street records before she turned twenty-five. A racing champion. A tech prodigy. I walked away from all of it. Gave up my empire. My crown. My name. All for a man who threw me away like garbage the moment someone "better" came along. Big mistake. On the night they cast me out, soaking wet and humiliated, I ran into the last person I ever wanted to see. "Look at you now, Mirena," Alexander Pierce murmured, watching me with those piercing eyes. "The woman who once ruled the financial world. Reduced to this." He tilted his head. "And for what? Love?" A dark laugh. "Pathetic." My former rival. The man who spent years trying to beat me-and never once succeeded. Now he stood before me, a Wall Street titan, watching my downfall with hungry satisfaction. He thought he'd seen the last of me. He was wrong. The game was simple now: drop the dead weight, reclaim what's mine, and remind everyone why they feared my name. Within months, I was back. Every market moved when I breathed. Every headline screamed my return. The Sterlings came crawling, begging for mercy they'd never shown me. And George? He watched in horror as I bought his most prized company without blinking. The divorce he'd so eagerly signed? His greatest regret. "Mirena, please," he begged, groveling at my feet. "Give me another chance." I didn't even look at him. "Sorry, darling. I don't recycle trash." But what I didn't expect was him. Alexander Pierce dropped to one knee in front of me-the man who had once mocked my fall, now looking up with something raw and undisguised in his crimson gaze. "I knew you'd take back everything they stole," he said, voice low. "Now..." A slow, dangerous smile curved his lips. "Take me too."
