Chapter 3

Sean’s phone rang before I reached the front door.

He checked the screen, and the anger on his face shifted into concern so fast it would have fooled me yesterday.

“Josie?” he answered.

Her voice carried through the quiet apartment. “There’s someone outside my window. I heard the latch move. Sean, I’m scared.”

“I’m coming.”

He ended the call and pointed at the console table. “Get the van keys.”

I kept one hand on my suitcase. “Call the police.”

“She’s panicking.”

“Then call an ambulance.”

“Wendy, stop being cruel. Drive me.”

The request was so familiar that my body nearly obeyed before my mind caught up. I had driven him to appointments, offices, restaurants, and supposed emergency consultations for two years. I had lifted the chair into the customized van until my back ached.

Tonight, I picked up the keys for a different reason.

I wanted to see how far the lie went.

The drive to Josie’s building took twenty minutes. I lowered the ramp, and Sean rolled toward the lobby without waiting for me. He knew the route. He knew the security code. He knew exactly which elevator reached her floor.

Josie opened her door before he knocked.

She wore a sheer silk robe over black lingerie. No broken window. No frightened neighbors. No police.

She climbed into his lap and wrapped her arms around his neck. “You came.”

“I’ll always come when you need me.”

I stood in the hallway with the keys in my hand.

Sean looked over her shoulder. “Go make chicken soup. She hasn’t eaten.”

“I’m leaving.”

His expression sharpened. “If you walk out now, I’ll cancel the wedding.”

“Cancel it.”

“I mean it.”

“So do I.”

Josie’s smile faded. She had expected tears, not surrender.

Sean shoved her from his lap and wheeled toward me. “You don’t get to decide this. You have no family, no savings, and nowhere to go.”

“I have more than you know.”

He caught himself before standing. His fingers crushed the wheels instead.

I stepped into the elevator. “Goodbye, Sean.”

“If those doors close, we are done!”

The doors slid together.

“That’s the point,” I said.

Back at the apartment, I changed into sweatpants and sat on the edge of the bed. The suitcase remained by the door. I planned to leave at dawn, after the building manager opened the service entrance.

My phone buzzed.

A video from Josie.

For one second, I considered deleting it. Then I pressed play.

The camera showed a hotel bed, tangled sheets, and Sean kneeling between Josie’s thighs. There was no wheelchair in sight. He moved with the steady balance of a healthy man, gripping her hips while she laughed into the lens.

“Make sure Wendy sees,” Josie said.

“She won’t leave,” Sean answered. “She never does.”

The cruelty in his voice cut more deeply than the sex.

My thumb slipped while I tried to close the file. The screen switched to a live call.

The connection opened instantly.

For a moment, I saw only a dark ceiling and heard the rhythm of the bed against the wall. Then the phone shifted. Sean’s face appeared in the frame, flushed and careless.

He looked toward the screen.

His body went still.

“Wendy?”

I held his gaze.

He pushed away from Josie. “This isn’t—”

I ended the call.

Then I blocked both numbers.

The room became very quiet.

I expected to cry. Instead, I felt a strange, clean emptiness, like the silence after an alarm finally stops.

I opened the bottom drawer of my desk and moved aside the old sketchbooks. At the back sat a small black velvet box.

Inside was the card my mother had given me when I turned eighteen: matte black, no numbers on the front, and a gold diamond crest in the center. It was linked to a family account I had never closed, no matter what Sean believed.

I placed the card beside my phone.

The account attached to it held more than enough to start over, but money was not the part that frightened me. Using it meant admitting my mother had been right. It meant returning to the boardroom I had fled and facing every relative who had watched me trade an inheritance for a man they despised.

I opened my banking app and restored the card. A message from the family office appeared immediately.

Welcome back, Ms. Hayes. Please confirm whether all supplementary users should be suspended.

I selected yes. Sean’s access would end before sunrise.

Then I opened Alexander Sterling’s profile.

His résumé was intimidating: private equity, shipping, technology, real estate, and a reputation for dismantling competitors without raising his voice. He had never married. He rarely appeared at social events. The press called him the most dangerous bachelor in New York.

At the bottom of the file, my mother had added a private note.

You met him once before. He remembers you.

I stared at his photograph, searching for a memory I could not place.

A knock sounded at the apartment door.

Not Sean’s fist. Too controlled.

I opened it to find Winston, my mother’s longtime chief of staff, standing in the hall beside two men in dark suits.

He bowed his head.

“Miss Hayes,” he said. “Your mother sent a car. She thought you might be ready to come home.”

One of the men behind him took the suitcase. The other held out a garment bag containing a navy coat I had left at the estate years ago. My initials were still stitched inside the collar.

Winston’s gaze moved to the torn trash bag and the broken necklace on the floor. He did not ask questions. That mercy nearly undid me.

“Your mother also asked me to say that returning home is not surrender,” he added. “It is a change of strategy.”

I looked back at the apartment where I had spent five years shrinking myself. The walls held no warmth now, only evidence: unpaid bills, medicine bottles, and photographs of a relationship that had never existed. Leaving did not erase what I had lost, but staying would have surrendered everything still mine.

Then I picked up my purse.

“I am ready.”
