Chapter 5

The Lakeshore Grand ballroom glittered beneath three tiers of crystal chandeliers. Investors, executives, and suppliers filled the room in black tie, their conversations blending with the string quartet near the stage. A wall of glass looked out over Manhattan, where the city lights seemed to promise that every fortune was permanent.

Tom gripped my elbow as we approached the press line.

"Keep your chin up," he murmured. "And try not to look bitter."

"I am not bitter."

"Then smile."

Camera flashes burst around us. Tom placed his hand at my waist, performing devoted husband for the financial press. Less than twenty-four hours earlier, he had installed his mistress in our bedroom.

A reporter called, "Mrs. Miller, how does it feel to celebrate another record year?"

I looked directly into the camera. "Records are only meaningful when the numbers behind them are honest."

Tom's fingers tightened painfully against my side.

The reporter leaned forward. "What does that mean?"

"It means audited results matter," Tom interrupted with a laugh. "Sarah has always been serious about bookkeeping."

He guided me away before anyone could ask another question.

Once we cleared the cameras, he dropped his arm. "What the hell was that?"

"A true statement."

"Do not improvise again."

"Tommy!"

Chloe swept toward us in a gold backless gown, wearing the corporate-funded watch and a diamond necklace I recognized from an insurance rider. She kissed Tom in full view of the registration desk.

Several employees looked away. Others looked at me.

Tom did not care. "You look incredible."

Chloe smiled over his shoulder. "Sarah, your table is in the back. We thought you would be more comfortable away from the investors."

"How considerate."

"Table forty-two," she added. "Near the kitchen."

I found it wedged between a service station and the emergency exit. Nine empty chairs surrounded mine. Tom had not merely excluded me; he had staged the exclusion so everyone would see it.

I sat alone and opened the banquet program. Miller Dynamics' growth figures covered three glossy pages. The projections assumed uninterrupted Apex shipments, continued Ashford credit support, and access to reserves Tom had already depleted.

Across the ballroom, Richard Dawson, Apex Manufacturing's chief commercial officer, sat at the center of table one. He had built the supplier relationship with Mark's help six years earlier. He did not yet know the guarantee supporting Miller Dynamics had been revoked.

At nine, Tom took the stage.

He looked flawless beneath the spotlight, every inch the self-made billionaire he had invented for the public. Chloe stood near the stairs, clapping before anyone else.

"This year, Miller Dynamics exceeded every projection," he began. "We expanded into three markets, secured a new East Coast facility, and proved that vision matters more than pedigree."

Polite applause followed.

Tom raised his champagne glass. "Growth requires sacrifice. A successful leader must recognize when old investments no longer produce value. Sometimes, you must cut away the dead weight of the past to make room for a brighter future."

His gaze crossed the ballroom and landed on me.

A current of discomfort moved through the guests. He had turned a corporate speech into a public announcement of our divorce.

"The future belongs to people with energy," he continued, smiling toward Chloe. "People unafraid to be exceptional."

She blew him a kiss.

I took one measured sip of champagne, set down the glass, and opened my encrypted phone beneath the table.

Mark had sent the final document.

ASHFORD CAPITAL GUARANTEE REVOCATION

Effective immediately due to undisclosed material risk and suspected misuse of reserve funds.

One message waited below it.

Your call.

Tom spread his arms toward the room. "Our supply chain is ironclad. Our liquidity has never been stronger. No competitor can touch us."

I typed two words.

Send it.

Mark's team delivered the revocation simultaneously to Apex, the lead bank, the board, and Miller Dynamics' outside auditors.

At table one, Richard Dawson's phone lit up.

He read the first line and stopped moving.

The man beside him leaned closer. Richard turned the screen away, opened a second attachment, and rose so abruptly that his chair struck the floor.

The crash cut through Tom's speech.

Tom lowered the microphone. "Richard? Is something wrong?"

Richard ignored him and called someone. "Suspend every Miller shipment," he said. "Now. Lock the loading bays and halt the trucks already in transit."

A murmur rippled outward.

Tom stepped to the edge of the stage. "Richard, we have a signed extension."

"We had a guarantee," Richard answered. His voice carried through the silent ballroom. "Ashford Capital just withdrew it and disclosed a material reserve deficiency."

Tom's face went still.

The lead bank representative at table three checked his own phone. Two board members did the same. Notifications began sounding across the room like scattered alarms.

Chloe hurried onto the stage. "Tommy, what is happening?"

He pushed the microphone aside and descended the steps. "Richard, give me ten minutes. This is an administrative error."

"A two-million-dollar undisclosed property transfer is not an administrative error."

The room erupted.

Reporters who had been seated near the back stood and raised their phones. Executives whispered urgently. One investor demanded to know whether the published cash balance was false.

Tom looked around as his carefully built image fractured in real time.

Then he found me.

I remained seated at table forty-two, alone beneath the emergency-exit sign.

His expression shifted from confusion to recognition. He knew I had said something to the press line. He knew his banking authority had changed. He knew I understood the books far better than he had admitted.

But he still did not understand how much power I held.

Richard walked toward the stage and placed his untouched champagne flute on the edge rather than throwing it. His restraint made the moment more devastating.

"Until your board explains the missing reserves and provides replacement credit support," he said, "Apex is suspending the partnership effective immediately."

Tom gripped the microphone stand. "You cannot do that in the middle of my banquet."

"I just did."

Richard turned and walked toward the exit. Three Apex executives followed him.

Tom jumped down from the stage and pushed through the crowd. "Richard, wait!"

The bank representative rose next, already speaking to counsel. Across the room, the chairman of Miller Dynamics' audit committee opened Mark's notice and stared at the ownership schedule attached to the final page.

He looked up sharply.

Not at Tom.

At me.

My secure phone vibrated once.

Emergency board session confirmed. Eight a.m. Your voting control has been verified.

Onstage, Chloe picked up the abandoned microphone without realizing it was still live.

"Tommy," she whispered, her frightened voice booming through every speaker in the ballroom, "what if they find the penthouse transfer?"

The entire room heard her.

Tom stopped moving.

And every camera turned toward the stage.
