Chapter 3

I left the secure phone facedown on the desk.

"An hour?" I asked.

Tom stepped into the room without permission. "You heard me. I want the acknowledgment signed before I leave for the office."

Eleanor rose from her chair. "You are threatening to throw your wife out of a house she owns?"

"This is between Sarah and me."

"You made it public when you texted me a photograph of your mistress in the master bedroom."

Chloe folded her arms. "I am standing right here."

Eleanor looked her over from bare feet to borrowed robe. "Unfortunately."

Tom's face reddened. "Mother, go home."

"Gladly." Eleanor picked up her handbag and kissed my cheek. The gesture was unusual enough to make Tom narrow his eyes. "Call me when you need me, Sarah."

After she left, Tom planted both hands on the desk. "What did she give you?"

"Advice."

"About the company?"

"About choosing better men."

Chloe laughed, but Tom did not. He glanced at the closed document case, then at the divorce petition on my screen. Suspicion sharpened his expression.

I needed him comfortable, not curious.

"The settlement is unacceptable," I said. "But I will sign a revised agreement today if you give me the house, my personal accounts, and a complete waiver of any claim against my family property."

His shoulders loosened. Greed displaced suspicion almost instantly.

"You have no family property."

"Then the waiver costs you nothing."

He straightened. "And the company?"

"I will confirm that I am not seeking any of your forty-nine percent."

That was true. I did not need his shares. My trust and Eleanor's transfer already gave me control.

Tom looked toward Chloe. She nodded impatiently.

"Fine," he said. "Draft it."

"My attorney will."

"You said you did not have one."

"I found one."

I called Mark from the ordinary phone, using the name he and I had agreed on years ago whenever Tom was nearby.

"Mark? It is Sarah. I need help with a divorce agreement."

He answered on the second ring. "Send me the petition."

Tom paced while I forwarded the document. Mark's legal team worked quickly. Within thirty-five minutes, a revised marital settlement arrived through a secure electronic-signature platform. It gave me exclusive possession of the villa, preserved all premarital and trust assets, divided ordinary marital property, and included a mutual waiver of future ownership claims. It also required both parties to disclose any corporate transfers made for personal benefit during the marriage.

That last clause was not hidden. It sat in plain language on page eleven.

Tom still did not read it.

He stood behind my chair, scrolling directly to each yellow signature tab. "Why is this twenty-eight pages?"

"Because your agreement was forty-six."

"You are taking the house."

"The deed has always been in my name."

"I paid the mortgage."

"The payments came from our joint account. The down payment came from me."

Chloe leaned over his shoulder. "Just sign it, Tommy. We have the penthouse."

Tom shot her a warning glance. "Not now."

The slip mattered. He knew I had heard it, but he assumed I lacked the means to trace it.

He signed the settlement, initialed the disclosure schedule without opening it, and tapped Complete.

My inbox chimed.

EXECUTED BY ALL PARTIES.

"There," Tom said. "You have the house. I have the company. Everyone wins."

I almost admired the confidence required to say it.

"The divorce is not final until a judge signs it," I said.

"My lawyer will handle that. Pack your things from the master bedroom. Chloe's interior designer is coming this afternoon."

He walked out with her, already discussing paint colors.

I waited until the study door closed before opening the encrypted phone. Mark appeared on video, seated at the head of a conference table. Two attorneys and a forensic accountant were visible behind him.

"The stock transfer filed at 7:42," he said. "Your trust now controls fifty-one percent. I have revoked Tom's proxy and notified the corporate secretary."

"Does Tom know?"

"The notice went to his general counsel. General counsel is currently on a flight from London, and the deputy has not opened it. We have a narrow window."

"Preserve every server and bank record before he receives the alert."

"Already in progress. We also found a pending request to move another million dollars from the emergency reserve into a consulting account. It has not cleared."

My attention snapped to the screen. "Whose account?"

"The beneficial owner is hidden behind a Nevada LLC, but the contact number belongs to Chloe."

Tom was not slowing down. He was doubling his theft.

"Can we block it without alerting him?"

"Not directly. The operating agreement gives the CEO authority below one and a half million. If we freeze the account now, he will know control has shifted."

I looked through the glass-paneled study door. Tom and Chloe crossed the foyer together. He rested his hand at the small of her back as movers carried bright monogrammed trunks through the front entrance.

"Let the request stay open," I said. "Flag it, mirror it, and preserve the authorization trail."

One of the attorneys leaned toward Mark's camera. "Sarah, if the transfer clears, recovery may take months."

"I know."

"Then why let it happen?"

"Because one suspicious payment can be explained as a mistake. Two establish intent."

Mark's expression remained calm, but I saw approval in his eyes. "The emergency board meeting is scheduled for nine tomorrow morning."

"Too soon. Tom has the annual banquet tonight. If we move before then, he will cancel it and hide behind counsel."

"What are you planning?"

I turned to the drawer containing the original supplier guarantees. Miller Dynamics' largest contract existed only because Ashford Capital had backed its letter of credit. Without that guarantee, the supplier could suspend shipments immediately.

"I am going to let him stand in front of every investor he has ever lied to," I said. "Then I am going to remove the floor beneath him."

Mark was silent for a beat. "I will have the revocation notice ready."

The ordinary phone on the desk buzzed. A message from Tom appeared.

Wear the navy gown tonight. Smile. Do not embarrass me.

A second notification followed, this one from the banking portal.

TRANSFER AUTHORIZED: $1,000,000.

The request carried Tom's digital signature and Chloe's consulting company as beneficiary.

I saved the record to the evidence vault.

Then I texted Tom back.

Of course. I would not miss your big night.
