Chapter 2

The first thing I noticed when consciousness crept back was the taste of copper in my mouth and the feeling that someone had taken a sledgehammer to my skull. My eyelids felt like lead weights as I forced them open, squinting against the harsh morning light streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of our Manhattan penthouse.

I was in our master bedroom, still wearing the emerald dress from last night, though it was now wrinkled and stained. The fabric clung uncomfortably to my skin, sticky with dried sweat and the lingering scent of fear. My throat felt raw, like I'd been screaming, though I couldn't remember making a sound.

Turning my head with considerable effort, I expected to see Adrian beside me, or at least some sign that he'd been concerned enough to stay. Instead, there was only a glass of cold water on the nightstand—not even fresh, judging by the condensation rings on the mahogany surface. The water looked like it had been sitting there for hours.

I reached for my phone with trembling fingers, the simple movement sending waves of nausea through my already churning stomach. The screen lit up, showing a string of notifications from social media, missed calls from my mother, even a few concerned texts from acquaintances who'd apparently heard about last night's 'incident' through the gossip mill.

But nothing from Adrian. Zero missed calls. Zero texts. Not even a cursory 'Are you alive?' message.

The silence from my husband was more devastating than the physical aftermath of whatever had happened to me. I stared at the empty call log, my chest tightening with a familiar ache that had nothing to do with my hangover.

Forcing myself to sit up, I swung my legs over the edge of the bed, waiting for the room to stop spinning. The penthouse felt eerily quiet—no sounds of Adrian getting ready for work, no clatter of dishes from the kitchen, no morning news playing on the television. Just the distant hum of Manhattan traffic forty floors below and the hollow echo of my own breathing.

I padded barefoot through the hallway, my bare feet silent on the cold marble floors. The living room came into view, and my heart sank further. Adrian's silk tie—the navy one with the subtle pattern I'd given him for his birthday two years ago—was carelessly draped over the arm of our white leather sofa. His cufflinks sat abandoned on the coffee table next to an empty tumbler that still reeked of whiskey.

But it was the smell that made my stomach lurch with something deeper than nausea. Ivy's perfume—that cloying, overly sweet jasmine scent she doused herself in—hung in the air like a toxic cloud. It was everywhere: on the sofa cushions, lingering near the bar cart, even drifting from the direction of the guest bathroom.

She'd been here. While I was unconscious, possibly dying from an allergic reaction, Adrian had brought his precious Ivy back to our home. Our sanctuary. The one place I'd foolishly believed was mine.

I sank onto the sofa, my legs suddenly unable to support my weight. The leather was cold against my skin, and I could smell her perfume even stronger here, as if she'd deliberately rubbed it into the fabric. The image of her curled up on my sofa, playing the concerned sister while I fought for my life, made bile rise in my throat.

How long had they sat here together? Had they discussed what to do with me? Had Adrian even asked if I was going to be okay, or had he been too busy comforting Ivy over her 'traumatic' evening?

I found myself moving toward Adrian's study, drawn by some masochistic need to torture myself further. The door was ajar, and I could see papers scattered across his usually pristine desk. But it was the wastebasket beside his chair that caught my attention.

Pieces of cream-colored paper lay crumpled among the usual debris of his work life. I knelt beside the basket, my hands shaking as I pulled out the fragments. The expensive stationery was torn into deliberate strips, but I recognized my own handwriting immediately.

Our wedding vows. The original draft I'd written ten years ago, saved all these years in my jewelry box like some precious relic. I'd brought them on the cruise as a surprise—a romantic gesture for our anniversary. I'd planned to read them to him over dinner, to remind him of the promises we'd made to each other when we were young and still believed in forever.

"I promise to love you through every storm," read one fragment. "To be your partner, your equal, your greatest supporter," said another.

The words mocked me now, torn and discarded like everything else I'd ever offered him. I gathered the pieces with trembling fingers, trying to fit them back together like a jigsaw puzzle of broken dreams. But some pieces were missing, probably flushed down the toilet or thrown in the kitchen garbage.

He'd destroyed them. Deliberately, methodically destroyed the most sacred words I'd ever written.

I was still kneeling on the floor, clutching the paper fragments, when my phone buzzed. The sound made me jump, my heart hammering against my ribs as I fumbled for the device.

The message was from a number I didn't immediately recognize, but the name at the top made my breath catch: Julian Blackwood.

"Are you okay? What I said on the deck last night still stands. Just nod, and I'll take you away."

I stared at the screen, my vision blurring as tears I'd been holding back finally spilled over. Last night felt like a fever dream—the taste of vodka burning my throat, the sound of laughter as I collapsed, strong arms catching me as everything went black. But through the haze, I remembered a voice, low and urgent, promising safety.

Julian Blackwood. Adrian's business rival, though the two men moved in the same circles. I'd met him at charity galas and corporate events, always from across crowded rooms. He was the kind of man who commanded attention without demanding it—tall, dark-haired, with eyes that seemed to see everything and judge nothing.

I'd never exchanged more than polite pleasantries with him, but somehow, in my moment of crisis, he'd been there. He'd saved me when my own husband couldn't be bothered to look up from his cards.

My finger hovered over the keyboard, trembling so badly I could barely hold the phone steady. Part of me wanted to type 'yes' immediately, to run toward whatever escape he was offering. But another part—the part that had been trained through ten years of marriage to doubt my own instincts—whispered warnings about jumping from one powerful man's influence to another's.

The torn wedding vows scattered around my knees seemed to whisper their own advice: *You've already tried love. Look how that turned out.*

I closed the message without responding, but I didn't delete it. Instead, I saved Julian's number and turned off my phone, unable to face any more reminders of how completely alone I was.

Sitting in Adrian's study, surrounded by the remnants of my shattered marriage, I finally allowed myself to acknowledge the truth I'd been avoiding for years.

I was already gone. I just hadn't left yet.
