Chapter 2

Brenda arrived at the hospital forty minutes after Victor.

She walked in with red eyes and pulled me into a hug before I could step back. She cried into my hair, loud and convincing, her whole body shaking against mine. Her perfume was the same one she had worn for years. I knew it as well as I knew my own name.

"I'm so sorry, Sarah," she kept saying. "I'm so, so sorry."

I stood inside her arms and let her hold me.

I thought about the champagne glasses and her dress on the floor.

She had been twenty meters away from me all night. She had my number. She knew Noah was critical. She had not called, not texted, not knocked on a single door.

I let her hold me and said nothing and kept my face completely still.

Victor appeared at my shoulder and put his hand on Brenda's arm. A brief squeeze. Not my arm. Hers.

I saw it. I filed it away.

We buried Noah four days later.

Grey sky. Cold air. The smell of wet earth and the sound of a minister's voice moving through words that could not hold the weight of what they were being asked to carry. I stood at the graveside in the black dress I had bought in under an hour because I had not owned one dark enough. Victor stood beside me. He held my hand the way a man holds a hand for cameras. Correctly. Without warmth.

Brenda stood three people to my left. She wore a hat with a veil, which I thought was a curious choice for someone who was supposed to be a guest at a child's funeral.

On the drive home Victor took a call in the car, holding up one finger at me like I was an inconvenience while he spoke to someone in a low, easy voice for seven minutes. When he hung up he turned the radio on.

He said nothing for the rest of the drive.

That evening Victor sat across from me at the kitchen table with a glass of whiskey and the look he got when he had already decided something.

"Brenda is going to stay with us for a while," he said.

I looked at him. "What?"

"She's worried about you. She doesn't want you alone during the day." He swirled his glass. "I think it's a good idea."

"I don't want her here, Victor."

His jaw tightened. "She's your best friend."

"I just buried my son. I want to be in my own home."

"She's staying." His voice went flat. "That's the end of it."

He picked up his glass and walked out.

Brenda moved in the next morning.

Two suitcases, a garment bag, a vanity case. She came through the front door like she was coming home. She knew which cabinet held the good cups. She knew Victor took one sugar. She knew the Wi-Fi password without asking.

The torment started quietly.

She moved my things without asking. Left her shoes in the hallway and when I moved them she put them back. Used my shampoo, sat in my chair, spoke to Victor in a soft private voice that dropped whenever I entered the room. Victor said nothing. Looked through me like I was glass.

One evening she came downstairs wearing my robe. Standing in my kitchen, laughing at something Victor had said, her hand resting on the counter like she had been living there for years.

"That's mine," I said.

She looked down at it. "I couldn't find mine. I'm sure you don't mind."

I looked at Victor.

He was looking at his phone.

I went upstairs and sat on my bed and thought about my friends. Lisa. Amaka. Priya. All three of them had called before the wedding with careful words. Something felt wrong. Victor felt wrong. A man who isolates you from everyone who loves you is not a man who loves you.

I had called them jealous. Said they couldn't stand to see me happy, couldn't stand that I was marrying a billionaire. I cut every single one of them off without looking back.

I sat there and I thought about that for a long time.

It was the robe that did it, in the end. Not the slap. Not the whispered conversations that stopped when I entered a room. The robe. Something about watching Brenda stand in my kitchen wearing my things with that easy, settled comfort made something cold and clear move through me. If she was this comfortable, Victor had given her reason to be. And if Victor had given her reason to be, there were things in this house he did not want me to find.

I waited until they were both out.

There was a filing cabinet in Victor's study. I had never had reason to open it before. He kept the key behind the bottom drawer, which I only knew because I had watched him go there once, three years ago, when he thought I was not paying attention. I had filed it away the way you file away small things that do not mean anything yet.

In this cabinet,I found medical files with my name on the tabs going back eighteen months. Consent forms, procedure approvals, authorizations for treatments I had never agreed to, all signed with my name, none of them mine.

And at the very bottom, a share transfer. My fourteen percent of Hale Group. Gone. Signed back to Victor without my knowledge.

My legs gave out.

I sat on the floor with the papers spread around me and I could not stop the tears. They came hard and ugly, the kind that hurt your chest. I thought about the man who used to bring me coffee on Sunday mornings. Who held my hand in the ultrasound room. Who kissed my forehead the night Noah was born and said, you are the most incredible person I have ever known.

When did he become this? How long had I been sleeping beside someone who was quietly using me as a tool and a shield and a signature?

I thought about Lisa. Amaka. Priya. Every warning I had thrown back in their faces.

I pressed the papers to my chest and cried for the woman I used to be. The one who thought she knew better than everyone who loved her.

I photographed every page. Put everything back. Locked the cabinet.

That evening Victor announced he was taking Brenda to dinner. He said it casually, without looking at me.

"You should come," Brenda said sweetly.

"I'm not going," I said.

Victor looked up. Something shifted in his face.

"It wasn't a suggestion, Sarah."

"I'm not going."

He crossed the room and grabbed my arm. Hard. Fingers digging in deep. He pulled me close and looked down at me with a coldness I had never seen in seven years.

"Get your coat," he said quietly. "And smile."

"Let go of me."

His hand came up. The slap cracked through the room.

My head snapped sideways. Pain bloomed across my cheek and my eyes filled and I grabbed the wall to stay upright.

I turned to Brenda.

She was by the door with her handbag over her arm, watching me with my hand pressed to my face. She did not flinch. Did not move. Did not look away.

She looked at me the way you look at something that needed to happen.

"Ready?" she said to Victor.

He straightened his jacket. "Ready."

They walked out. The door closed.

I stood alone in the hallway with my cheek burning and silence pressing in from every direction. My friends had warned me. Every single one of them.

I wiped my face. I went to Victor's desk.

And I found the name I was looking for.

Marcus Barnes.

The one man Victor had warned me about with real fear in his voice. Stay away from Marcus Barnes, Sarah. He is dangerous. He would destroy me if he could.

I stared at the number for a long moment.

Then I pressed call.

Because the woman who trusted too easily was gone.

And whoever picked up that phone was about to meet someone entirely different.
